Wish you were here Lyrics

Performed by Pink Floyd
Review The Song (93)

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
And cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk on part in the war,
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

I thought i got over my best friends death, but i was on my way back from a concert with my girlfriend and this song came on. I instantly broke down crying, which is rather peculiar considering she has never seen me cry before. His name was Nick Murphy, and we grew up together in a small town in Wisconsin. We did everything together! We would ride bikes and listen to music all the time. We got in trouble sooo many times, it was rather funny looking back. Back then, however, it wasn't very funny at all :P. The point is, that Nick was my best friend, and i lost him a couple weeks ago. He committed suicide, and i don't know why. The only thing i know is that i wish he was here...

Up until today, when I heard this song on the radio while at work, I could not listen to it without losing it. My two nephews sang this song and played guitar at my parents funeral. My mom and dad were taken away from us in a motor vehicle accident January of 2011, 2 days before my mom's 66th birthday and 3 days before their 48th wedding anniversary. This was a very devastating time for my family and I,something we will never get over, just learn to live with. Wish they were here. Love and miss you mommy & daddy, kisses in the wind.

My interpretation of this song. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/4/11

This song is not directly about Syd, I feel. It’s actually about the writer (Roger Waters?) who is alienated from other people who cannot understand.
The first stanza involves the writer asking another person whether he can differentiate between two things in life. At first, the differences seem pretty obvious (green fields from a cold steel rail). But for the alienated writer, the things seem quite the same. In this way, he is asking the other person whether he has experienced this feeling. (Do you think you can tell?)
In the second stanza, the writer confirms that the other person (Syd) has actually experienced all of this. He then continues to ask how it felt. He blames this sense of alienation on other people like family and friends (Did they get you to trade.......cold comfort change?) but then asks Syd if he himself chose this path (Did you exchange, a walk on part in the war for a lead role in the cage?)
It is in the third stanza that the writer makes his motive clear.
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground, what have we found?
The same old fears, Wish you were here.
The writer is asking the other person for support since he is the only person who has experienced such things and can comfort him.
However, this is only my interpretation on this song. There can be dozen interpretations of a song based on mood, feelings, etc. The main thing, never let a certain interpretation limit you to thinking it means only that.

This song I fist hurd when my boyfriend sang it to me and I almost cryed thinking about my mom. She's an alcholic and it breaks my hear t to see her. She's such a sweet person but she's gone its consumed her life. And the words of this song relates to almost everones story called life.

Lovely Song, And Here's Another | Reviewer: Taly | 6/7/11

A lovely song, very strong poignant lyrics, lovely melody. Here's another. For all those here who lost someone, there is another song by another group and which has the exact same title as this one, which will, I think, be just as poignant, and emotionally enduring. The song is 'Wish You Were Here' by the Bee Gees (lyrics can be found on this website) written in 1988 right after the death of their youngest brother Andy who was only 30, having turned 30 only three days earlier. Two versions exist, the original on the album 'One' (1989) and a new somewhat different one on Robin Gibb's 2003 album 'Magnet' dedicated to his twin brother Maurice, who died that same year. If you enjoyed this song and it has touched you sentimentally then the Bee Gees one will too, for sure. As it speaks of the complete devastation of loosing someone you really love and the good times you had when that person was around.

Wish he was here | Reviewer: Manish | 5/30/11

My cousin brother died of brain hemorrhage 16 days ago. He was 26. He was the only one I could count on when things seemed dark, and the only one who could bring me out of sadness.
His life had been a struggle. I know I can never be as strong as he was, can never live after going through some of the things he did.
Reading some of these words would've been meaningless to me a few months ago. People pretend to understand, but really, you never can, unless you've gone through the same thing.
And the same is true for songs like this one. I heard it before, liked it, but never thought much of it.
Now, I'm even afraid to hear it, because I know it'll remind me of him.

I was a vehicle accident investigator.
I was on my way to a crash site just listening to the car radio.
This girl comes on and dedicates the song to her friend who was killed the day before.
That crash scene was my first job for the day.
I listened
I cried
I quit
I am free

This song means a lot to me | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/28/10

In October, my voice instructor died of a horrible infection. During our last session together, we reviewed this song. In the last words of his video will, he told me with misty eyes that I was a talented student with the greatest potential he had ever seen. Whenever I had a bad day, he would always listen.
This song means so much to me in preserving Jimmy's memory...Godspeed Jimmy...we'll all miss you.

This is an amazing song. My mom also went down in a mental decline when I was 11 and it's gone downhill ever since, and I do wish she was here, too. But whatever situation you're in anyone can relate to this song. Everyone has lost someone they care about, whether someone died or maybe someone moved away or maybe you aren't friends anymore with someone etc. That's why I think this song is so great. I'm not so good at descriptive things like this ha but I hope you get what I'm trying to say.

Another Opinion | Reviewer: Tooscaredtosay | 12/19/10

Wow Katie, what you wrote is amazing.
I defiantly have strong feelings for this wonderful song. The intro is haunting and gives me weird feelings in my stomach similar to that of watching "Requiem for a Dream". When I hear it, it always reminds me of how things could have been with a certain person if I hadn't been so shy. I don't know why just dose, but I totally get the whole Syd mental health thing. Awesome song...

Double meaning | Reviewer: Katie | 12/19/10

This song is about Syd Barrett's mental decline in the band. One day they did not pick him up from band practice and he was so far gone that he did not even know the difference. The double meaning; his band mates wish he was physically and mentally present. He was so far gone and it definitely struck a chord if you will with their hearts. But he could never grasp that concept
----------------------------

Though I'm not in the same situation with anyone who is mentally gone nor in a band, this song reaches out to my heart. I miss my grandpa. I miss his guidance, his stability, his comforting wisdom. The lyrics don't really apply, but the tone and the message being radiated from the music just makes everyone understand in one way or another a type of pain that is provoked through hurtful situations.

I'm eighteen and this song is far older than I am, I believe. The message is still the same though after all these years; Wish you were here.
