Don Henley The Boys of Summer Lyrics

Last updated: 07/22/2013 01:21:39 PM

Nobody on the road
nobody on the beach
I feel it in the air
the summer's out of reach
Empty lake, empty streets,
the sun goes down alone
I'm drivin' by your house
Though I know you're not home

I can see you
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
You got your hair combed back and your
sunglasses on, baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
after the boys of summer have gone

I never will forget those nights
I wonder if it was a dream
Remember how you made me crazy?
Remember how I made you scream?
Now I don't understand
what's happened to our love,
But babe I'm gonna get you back
I'm gonna show you what I'm made of

I can see you
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
I see you walkin' real slow and you're
smilin' at everyone
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
after the boys of summer have gone

Out on the road today
I saw a deadhead sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice inside my head said,
"Don't look back. You can never look back."
I thought I knew what love was,
what did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go but

I can see you
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
You got that top pulled down and that
radio on baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
after the boys of summer have gone

I can see you
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
You got that hair slicked back and those
wayfarers on, baby
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
after the boys of summer have gone

TAKES ME AWAY TO ANOTHER PLACE!!! | Reviewer: Shelly | 7/22/13

This is my favourite song, ever! When I hear this on the radio I'm mesmerised and sent off into another journey. A Summer journey, memories of lost love, but what does Summer 2013 have in store for me????

It's been a long day and I hate the fucking Eagles, man! | Reviewer: The Dude | 4/13/13

But I do really enjoy this song by Don Henley solo. There's something about the minor chords, the key, and the longing in his voice that make the lyrics so real for me. I've never experienced a lost love like he's singing about, and I hope I never do.

I read the poster above talking about Jacqui, that happens to be my wife's name. She's Filipino (brown) and is currently shopping for a new pair of wayfarer's. No joke. So this song hits home as more a profession/declaration of love for me personally, although the tone and video show it to be something very different.

Either way the sparseness of the guitar and ethereal effect of the synths driving that mechanical beat that apparently a kid can play (see the video, I vaguely remembered it from childhood but it all came back when I saw it again) really drive the message of the song home. That feeling of autumnal doom, and hope for those feelings of summer to return, while knowing that a long winter is much more likely, is palpable. A truly admirable effort by a songwriter of (IMO) questionable talent.

If you really want to feel something while listening to music, and have trouble doing so, play this song and watch the music video. I dare you not to feel something.

PS the world needs more deadhead stickers on Cadi's

Heartfelt perfection in a song | Reviewer: GtrGeorge | 3/7/13

Don Henley puts into words and music the longing for a time that slipped away. A relationship that dissolved when one partner walked away to chase "the Boys of summer". For a young man in love, the loss is never careless another person can be. In the Video Don is always looking in black and white..the same scene unfold around him...again and again....He cannot escape ("don't look can never look back....") It is personal and yet so many of us have felt this. Don Henley has captured the sights and sounds..right down to the gulls flying overhead..of a love that faded away.

Boys still think love is an orgasm | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/31/12

It only takes about a life time before we men can begin to understand that while we think that love is built by the orgasm, we have missed the entire meaning of love because a mature (meaning smart woman) sees and feels love far differently. We men miss the real love most of our lives, go thru relationships and marriage without the real understanding of love, and only if we are lucky, maybe, just maybe, we find that one woman that let's you in on the real meaning and experience of love . So Henley's lyrics are just a young man's easy mid-understanding of what a woman feels and may need. We young testosterone driven men are so blind to the real manifestation of male-female love, and I only hope that once, just once in your life , that every man can find real love

Lost Love Held | Reviewer: Rob | 9/23/11

Poetic and evocative. Love's tenuous hold becomes indelible by Henley's lyrics. This brilliant song reminds me thematically of Morrison's "Crystal Ship" with the narrator asking his love for 'another flashing chance at bliss another kiss,' and Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat": 'She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running like a watercolor in the rain.' All of these artists succeed in making the impermanent permanent.

Very personal to me.... | Reviewer: Du | 8/20/11

We were together for 3 years, married for half that time, and she went away in 1976. Her name is Jacqui, and for more than 35 years she has been the love of my life even after 2 more wives and 3 grandkids. I'll never forget her.

One of Henley's Best | Reviewer: Kelly Matthews | 4/21/09

This is one of those songs that never gets old. From the album Building the Perfect Beast, musically and vocally this is a stand out cut from the 1980s. It has a video that really fits the song as well. You can call music dated, or whatever, but the bottom line is, good music is good music no matter what decade it came out. The Boys of Summer by Don Henley is one of those classics.
