Sympathy For The Devil Lyrics

Performed by The Rolling Stones
Review The Song (31)

(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man's soul and faith

And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the Czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain

I rode a tank
Held a general's rank
When the Blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
(woo woo, woo woo)

I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
(woo woo, woo woo)

I shouted out,
"Who killed the Kennedy's?"
When after all
It was you and me
(who who, who who)

Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached Bombay
(woo woo, who who)

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
(who who)
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
(who who, who who)

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
(woo woo, who who)

Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint
(who who, who who)

So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, have some taste
(woo woo)
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, mmm yeah
(woo woo, woo woo)

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, mmm yeah
(who who)
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, mmm mean it, get down
(woo woo, woo woo)

Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!
(woo woo)

Tell me baby, what's my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, what's my name
I tell you one time, you're to blame

Oh, who
woo, woo
Woo, who
Woo, woo
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Oh, yeah

What's my name
Tell me, baby, what's my name
Tell me, sweetie, what's my name

Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Oh, yeah
Woo woo
Woo woo

how can you say you glorify satan when satan comes from christianity? dont you even think that believing in satan automatically makes you a believer of god? one can not exist without the other period.

instead of talking about religion and shit lets talk about the merits, if any, of the song. for me, this one is goood. and yep i like the lyrics. how he smirks and boasts of his deeds. like he is shitting you. hehehe. well, i read the lyrics when i listen to music. if you dont care about the lyrics then youre missing a lot... a good story, a bad poem, naivete i guess? but if youre not particular with the lyrics then how can you sing some north korean song?

Believer | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/8/12

Jesus s d real god.. N dis satan lucifer has lost its identity. Jesus has won d victory on d cross.. No matter how much ever yo talk gud abu satan it won work. Cos god has won d battle. Who cares for riches n wealth on dis earth. We al kno d fact tat one day we al wil die. Everythin in dis earth s meaning less. Al d riches n glory n honour n blessings comes from d father.. The name above all names n his name s JESUS. The oly tru living god.. Wen he said it, he settles it. So do not dear abu anythin which comes upon d name of satan. Death has lost its tail. Der s no death for dos who r in christ. Belive in jesus and all things r possible and he will bless yo in abundance tat yo future generations wil be blessed in hundred folds. Fear not d evil cos d lord has told I am d one I am and i can do all things possible. He tat beliveth me, let him belive n he tat denies me let him deny. I wil judge over him n reward him according to his works says d lord.. So satan yo lucifer yo don 've any rights over me o anyone who belongs to jesus. Yo 've lost n yo r a loser. God s d shepherd of ma soul. Praise be to him.

A Hell of a good song | Reviewer: joebecosse | 3/24/12

Whatever you believe in does not matter.
This song remains one of the best of the Stones.
The problem with those who think they hold the truth, they try, by imposing their view, to stuff it down your throat.

Don't give a shit about the lyrics | Reviewer: lsa2013 | 11/29/11

Stop the nonsensical religious argument... I really only listen to music for the musical aspects, not the poetry behind it, reason is because when I look up the lyrics, they're lyrics I like. Not the songs with the so-called "backward messages" or all that BS...

My God isn't 0-1 | Reviewer: Samson | 11/17/11

To the guy who has suggested that my god is a "nightmare I have created" and that every successful person praised satan

How do you measure success sir? Becuase I would like to think Jesus Christ was pretty successful at creating a sea of followers and religion. Plus if God is a nightmare then so is Satan because as we all know from Sunday School, Lucifer was the "Angel" of Light and was banished along with his fellow conspirators who tried to take over heaven and instead were sent to hell. Now tell me something if I were a man who wanted fortunes and wealth beyond my wildest dreams why would i put my belief in a "loser" god like Satan i mean he failed at what he was trying to do so my guess is that the only people who believe that satan is the real God are losers themselves.

You believe what you want sir but i'm going to be rational and believe that the good that I do towards others and the world is going to pay off a hell of a lot more then some loser bashing believers on a website that is rarely visited or having up to date discussions.

God Bless you and may Christ Be With You
Sincerely, Samson

Dude Chill and review the song | Reviewer: Response to the moron below | 10/16/11

Why dont you chill out and just talk about the song instead of just talking trash to people for what they believe, But if you honestly think that no one of any of the most popular religions in the world has ever been successful then you more of an idiot then you sound and if your so successful and ballin outrageously why are you spending half your day talking trash of other people (you dont even know i might add) and thinking about what your going to say on an internet board. so my response to you sir:

"what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

And the true reason we are all here, i really like this song, I wish i was around when all this great music was made sounds like a great time period. I looking the song meaning and found a little of that here, also found idiots talking trash to people they dont even know.

Damn good song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/31/11

That is the best song ever.
And for all the kids discussing pathetic loser religious stuff, let me tell you something:
Your so called "god" is nothing but a nightmare you have created inside your own paycheck-to-paycheck little loser mind.
The only GOD that matters is LUCIFER. Every and each successful man and woman in this planet got that success because LUCIFER, THE BEARER OF THE LIGHT, guided them in the way to get that success. That is why you don't see a REAL Christian, Muslim, Buddist or whatever in any prominent position in arts, music, literature, politics, business, sciences, or whatever. Everyone and all that are successful in anything in this life, did so because LUCIFER helped them somehow. That is why you always see some praise to LUCIFER in all the works or through the life of anyone that is successful.
So, keep drinking your religious Koolaid from your pastor, priest, mullah or guru, and let them keep having the nice cars, houses, jets, clothes, jewelry, power and women. Waste your time with your religion and live a pathetic life. I prefer to believe in LUCIFER and let HIM help me to get everything that is coming to me: the world, and everything in it.
If I get to spend my eternity in hell after that I just don't care. Better be burning my feet in hot lava while partying hard with hookers in hell, than to be in heaven watching baby jesus and the angels doing some mix of Erasure/Queen queer show for the rest of eternity.

why? | Reviewer: indifferent soul | 7/23/11

how about this? don't discuss the deeper meaning of the song lyrics here, review the song, is it good? bad? moderate? whichever you choose, but there are three pages of useless dribble for this one song. heres my review: this song is good, i like it, i want to listen to more of the rolling stones also. see? that wasn't so hard now was it.

Response to "Clever Responses" | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/6/11

Obviously what i wrote is not very clear, because you dont know me or you have saw my face while i wrote that. Just to say it was a completely ironic and sarcastic divagation, not something i really think should be done. If you read it again you understand my objective.

And if you dont want to hear this vague discussions dont read this responses. The lyrics are right above.

should we appear unphased | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/14/11

'So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, have some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste'. there is a choice for every human being to watch out whoever come his way and through whichever means. i've often said since man struggles to keep his faith, shaking hands with anyone should get you aware that both good and evil approaches your door, so it is left for you to "Use all your well-learned politesse". rolling stones was merely giving out what it had and it made impact exposing to us that there is a personality in the esoteric who has its eyes on humanity and would use anybody if he could to bring his desire to fruition. However, for Both good or evil to be accomplished, god must first allow it. He created everything for his pleasures, he pleasurably watch how things are becoming as he intends them to be. The world unfolds in it dramatic phases. Mick has a gift, and has given the world something to reflect about. Art is free with no inhibitions, why don't we enjoy music for once and learn out of it.

Clever responses | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/31/11

Perhaps we should require literacy tests before you're allowed to impart your insightful a obviously well informed political philosophy. "Mental healthness tests"? This is an absolutely amazing song by the Stones. Please stop ruining the discussion of that with your bullshit opinions on world history and religion.

Thank you

Not a Review | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/1/10

I wont make a review about this song because most ideas were said and the understanding of a music must come from yourself.
But for what i see, i wanna say something about religions. I think you should have to make IQ and mental healthness tests before youre allowed to read the bible, the Qur'an or any other of these relligious books. The wrong and literally interpretations of some of these texts created many of the problems in the world through the ages. I can think of many examples in only 1 minute. Tell me if im wrong.

About the song, all i can say is that is one of my favourites of everything i heard. And i heard a lot.

Stones at their best, I agree. | Reviewer: Hugues | 9/28/10

A song like that shows why the Rolling Stones, for a time, were one of the world's greatest rock bands. Far from glorifying evil, it forces us to reflect on it and the many faces it shows. On a slightly different note, the Prince of F*%king Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne, does an excellent cover of this song.

My take | Reviewer: Winston Oboogie | 9/12/10

My take is that there is evil (the devil) in everyone. History shows how this evil has come out in some to destroy the lives and dreams of millions who have managed to suppress the evil deep inside their existents.
