Standing On The Moon Lyrics - Grateful Dead

Review The Song (15)

Standing on the moon
I got no cobweb on my shoe
Standing on the moon
I'm feeling so alone and blue
I see the Gulf of Mexico
As tiny as a tear
The coast of California
Must be somewhere over here - over here

Standing on the moon
I see the battle rage below
Standing on the moon
I see the soldiers come and go
There's a metal flag beside me
Someone planted long ago
Old Glory standing stiffly
Crimson, white and indigo - indigo

I see all of Southeast Asia
I can see El Salvador
I hear the cries of children
And the other songs of war
It's like a mighty melody
That rings down from the sky
Standing here upon the moon
I watch it all roll by - all roll by

Standing on the moon
With nothing else to do
A lovely view of heaven
But I'd rather be with you

Standing on the moon
I see a shadow on the sun
Standing on the moon
The stars go fading one by one
I hear a cry of victory
And another of defeat
a scrap of age-old lullaby
Down some forgotten street

Standing on the moon
Where talk is cheap and vision true
Standing on the moon
But I would rather be with you
Somewhere in San Francisco
On a back porch in July
Just looking up to heaven
At this crescent in the sky

Standing on the moon
With nothing left to do
A lovely view of heaven
But I'd rather be with you - be with you

It soothes my soul every time I hear this one; GD led by JG whilst communing from the other side with deft arrangements in verse. This one hits home as its the chief song that carried me through when my brother left this plane & I am ever thankful for the power of this music! My bro was invested in GD culture & his taper tix yielded a treasure trove of shows...What a legacy!! It is through Michael I embark upon discovery of the vastness of excellent music out there which is fitting because music was our bond.
Fare thee well My Brother

I think standing on the moon speaks to reflecting back on life from a place or state of isolation; and that even with all its strife and pain, there is still love and attraction enough to cause you to wish you were reengaged.

Jerry's view | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/29/13

For me the song is about Jerry's experience. He was always on stage playing the music. He never got to experience what it was like as an audience member. "I'd rather be with you"

retrospect | Reviewer: 33shows | 4/26/13

I think of this song as Jerry previewing the end of his life.... on his way to heaven, he stops and looks back at us; he sees how tiny and vulnerable we are, how trivial our wars are in light of the value of the gift of life and all it has to offer. It makes me feel that jerry really got it, he knew that, with all of it's pain and strife, life is truly a gift from God, and we should be thankful for every second.
Thank You Gerry

pretty, pretty song | Reviewer: hastoloverush | 12/29/11

The melody haunts me. Can't believe I never saw them or really got into the dead now that Jerry is gone...only now do I realize what I missed. OH well....
I can't get this song out my head...I miss the man I love so much. He has moved forward. I have not. I'd rather be with him.

my iterpretation of this song | Reviewer: holy man | 6/10/11

I think this song is saying how far off we are from the way we think of ourselfs from a viewer's precpective in heaven, also how little our society values things. "the coast of california, is somewhere over here."

I see the same in this song...the moon being heaven...but I also see that the person in heaven sees the world crying because of all the war and pain they see from heaven (I see the Gulf of Mexico, As tiny as a tear)...still, I (they) rather be with you...be with you

What this song mean's to me | Reviewer: Bridget Richards | 6/1/11

This is an amazing song. I first heard this song on July 25,2009 in Asheville NC at Bruce Hornsby's concert at the Biltmore. When Bruce sang this song,it gave me cold chill's and when Bruce was singing this it made me cry. It made me think about my uncle Ronnie who is no longer with us. In March of 2008 he was killed in a car accident. It just make's me think that even though he is happy now and with his mother in heaven that maybe he to is hoping and wishing that he could be back here on earth with his family. I really miss my uncle. I know that Bruce lost his nephew R.S. in a car accident in January of 2009 and that make's me think of Bruce and what he went through and what he was feeling at that time. I know that Bruce played with Jerry and the rest of the Grateful Dead guy's,thank you Jerry and Bruce for a great song. Rest in Peace Jerry. Thank you again Bruce for your wonderful music.

I see the moon as an analogy of heaven. Someone that has died may love you from heaven, but they would rather be with you. I often think of my grandmother when I hear this song and it makes me cry or I think of myself when I die and how I would rather be with my wife and kids than dead.

Jerry, Simply The BEST | Reviewer: Joe D | 4/2/11

Never had the privilage of seeing the dead perform this song. I think Jerry and the boys will live ofr all eternity! Even if we blow ourselves to kingdom come, Jerry and the Boys will always be out there:

Standing on the Moon!

Love and miss you Jerry!

GRATEFUL | Reviewer: Alan Wanless | 1/6/11

As I approach my 60th year I'm truly grateful I was born when I was, so much of todays so called music is shallow, without form or substance, In several hundred years (if humankind hasn't destroyed itself) The Dead and their peers will shine like a beacon telling our offspring "this is how it should be, Thanks boys !

love song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/28/10

It does talk of war, but the fact that he will go back down there... with endless war to be with his love is truly a testament for his love. This is one of the most beautiful love songs I have ever heard.

Always brings back memories | Reviewer: Mike | 7/14/09

I remember sitting with my back against the wall 3rd level at the Phila Spectrum enjoying my mescaline state, and watching & hearing the boys play this song, it's a memory that will always stay with me, as I truly thought I was standing on the moon watching the concert down below.

Humbling | Reviewer: Ryan | 8/3/07

Given the right state of mind and the knowledge of how to truely let your mind run free this song is even more amazing than if taken at face value. Not that long ago I was listening to the song, I closed my eyes and I could visualize what it would be like to stand on the moon looking at the earth. The most amazing visuals I have had so far in my life. The whole experience was very humbling. "It's like a mighty melody"

A great, sad chilling song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/31/07

A classic Grateful Dead song, performed with a chilling saddness reflecting on the endless struggle against war.
