FORTUNATE SON Lyrics
Artist(Band):Creedence Clearwater Revival
Review The Song (27)Print the Lyrics
Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
ooh, they're red, white and blue.
And when the band plays "Hail To The Chief",
oh, they point the cannon at you, Lord,

It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no senator's son,
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, no,

Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, don't they help themselves? oh.
But when the taxman come to the door,
Lord, the house look a like a rummage sale, yes,

It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no millionaire's son, no, no.
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, no.

Yeh, some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,
And when you ask them, how much should we give,
oh, they only answer, more, more, more, yoh,

It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no military son, SON, NO
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, NO NO

It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, no no no,
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate son, son son son

Review about FORTUNATE SON

Working class heroes | Reviewer: JackDharma | 10/28/09

Working class kids still go to war for baseless reasons (the domino theory? weapons of mass destruction?)We don't learn from our history. No matter how much we can all agree that the last war had no purpose and cost too much in lives and lost opportunities, we believe that we must fight the next war to (pick one) make the world safe for democracy; protect our shores; prevent an even wider war; etc., etc. It was nonsense then; it's nonsense now.

Vietnam didn't invade us | Reviewer: denny | 10/27/09

The engineering student cited above never studied current events. Our fathers lied about their ages and joined the military to DEFEND our country against Pearl Harbor. There was no such rush during World War I. Nor was there during Vietnam. I lived through that. They didn't invade us. It wasn't cowardice. It was belief in George Washington's America: Avoid foreign entanglements, fight in self-defense, not as imperialists. "Fortunate son" was on target then, and remains so today.

antiwar | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/21/09

A most virulent anti-war song. It should be noted that, legend has it, that Fogerty's army reserve duty was done the day before he wrote this. This is what came out. The only other song with such anti-war impact was the Rolling Stones very few forays into politics, "Gimme Shelter". Both should be taken in the context of the Vietnam war.

Class Structure commentary | Reviewer: B Paine | 4/21/09

John Fogerty's chief message here is about the double standards of class structure in any society. England had the Lords & Dukes & Earls & other royals, which the American Revolution tried to break away from. Centuries later, America eventually replicated England's special privileges for different classes, but without the royals. It's not just about money either, more about "who you know" and who speaks on your behalf. Fogerty takes the side of the unconnected average Joe, because he "ain't no senator's son."

Hippies were cowards | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/15/09

Hippies were cowards then, and they have remained cowards to this very day. I am unsure if this is a result of far too many brain cells killed by excessive drug use or perhaps having parents that been through far worse and in an effort to make their kids lives better they simply gave them what ever the kid desired without question. Either way, former hippies/flower children are some of the most irresponsible human beings imaginable.

We know them as liberal democrats

fortunate son | Reviewer: ray zavala | 7/7/08

Credence Was So Wrong | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/8/08

Yes. I too was in college in 69-71. Engineering.
I remember sitting on the front lawn of the boarding home I rented, studying my calculus while the "hippies" protested at the college administration building across the street. You folks were wrong then and you are still wrong. We are still paying dearly for our cowardly retreat from Vietnam.
My father's generation would lie about their age to join the military to fight for freedom and justice. My generation listened to Credence and became the first true generation of spineless traitors.
Our founding father's said "Give me Liberty or Give Me Death" Americans today say give me my cool old Credence songs and security and please don't ask for sacrifice.

You people are pathetic. But I don't care, because the chickens WILL come home to roost soon and when you have given away your freedom for comfort you will pay the price that George Orwell predicted.

"The future of mankind? Imagine this. A steel jackboot stomping on a human face......FOREVER.

Sincerely,
Gary

I remember - and still true today! | Reviewer: Robert | 3/26/08

It's still the unfinished business of my generation! From '68-72 I was in college, at protests, writing letters, etc. I had hoped that what we all did then ended this type of issue... but some of my generation became 'Enron', 'the Bush Administration' and so on...

I remember the impact and boost this song (and others like "OHIO" and "CHICAGO") gave many of us - including VietNam Vets! Unfortunately, it's happening again. I'm a musician and our band has just decided to do this one. 'cause it's good. 'Cause it matters today!

Maybe we 'Boomers' need to get back and finish what we started in the '60's.

im am the fortunate one | Reviewer: Bob Dylan | 1/16/08

thanks having lyrics of senator son on your website Ineeded to copy it down on paper for my english class becuase my teacher needed songs about politics and something historical to right down on paper for a grade.

great CCR | Reviewer: clemens dicken | 11/30/07

...and this is what I experienced and shows the value: My 21years old son got infected by "Have you ever seen the Rain" as I was in the seventies - magnigficent. Later he told me that this is the song which always makes him think of me. Til then I was not really aware - but he is right. Fortunate Son was not a favorite of me in the past - but I agree with all others here - a great rock song with an outstanding rapport of music ans lyrics.
