I know alanis has stuggled with an eating disorder in the past, and having an ED myself i always interpreted it to talk about how she wouldnt lapse back into her ED even when things got tough. "that i would be good even if i gained ten pounds" suggesting that she has promised to accept whatever comes

i dont think there is a wrong way to interpret this song at all though, its too good! :)

I think 'That I Would Be Good' is a great love song about Alanis' feelings, love and all, I think Alanis is a great singer and she has such a beautiful voice, Her voice makes me smile, happy and touches, I just wanna be close to Alanis, but, she loves me a lot, Her heart gets close to mine, I wanna hold her close to my heart and she wants to hold me close to her heart, This is the love between me and Alanis, I wanna give Alanis a sweet kiss on her cheeks and lips and she wants to give me a sweet kiss on my cheek and lips, oh Alanis, I love you so much from our hearts.

This song is about someone who is sick, or metaphorically "falling apart at the seams". Someone who feels that because of this illness, this defect, they are worthless or cannot be loved. The things that I interpreted are depression; That I would be loved, even if I numbed myself & That I would be good, even if I lost sanity, so it really hits home for me. Love this song, it's an Alanis classic. I cry every time.
