Smoke on the Water Lyrics

Performed by Deep Purple
Review The Song (15)

We all came out to Montreux
On the Lake Geneva shoreline
To make records with a mobile
We didn't have much time
Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around
But some stupid with a flare gun
Burned the place to the ground
Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky, smoke on the water

They burned down the gamblin' house,
It died with an awful sound
and Funky Claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground
When it all was over
We had to find another place
But Swiss time was running out
It seemed that we would lose the race
Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky, smoke on the water

We ended up at the Grand Hotel
It was empty cold and bare
But with the Rolling truck Stones thing just outside
Making our music there
With a few red lights and a few old beds
We make a place to sweat
No matter what we get out of this
I know, I know we'll never forget
Smoke on the water, a fire in the sky ,smoke on the water

Smoke On The Water | Reviewer: Natalia | 1/14/11

I like Deep Purple as a music group, but I don't like this song. I love Child In Time, Soldier Of Fortune.. I like Space Truckin', Black Night... But I don't like Smoke On The Water. I do not know why. But I don't like it.

This is a great song, and all true. Can you believe they composed and recorded the song at the last minute and it became a classic hit? That, my children, is how awesome songs are written. (You should all read the story of how Queen's 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love' came to be. It's quite funny. Queen <3)

A True Song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/17/10

This is a true song. The gambling house (casino) had a big fire at that time during Montreux Jazz Festival. I lived in Montreux for 3 years and had a chance of having seen some photos taken during this big fire. They were playing as their stage was burning.

To Code Red. quote:I don't understand what they mean by "It seems that we would lose the race.." Anyone?/quote
I think it means "they would lose the race against time to get the album, (Machine Head) finished.
They were using the Rolling Stones Mobile recording studio and were being harrased by the cops for being too loud when recording. Their barely got the last song put on the album before being run out of town.

liiiiisssssssssssttttttteeeeeeeeeeen here | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/12/09

wow so many people on here are misunderstanding the song...yes its true they went to france to record machine head they were at a Frank Zappa gig near the end of the recording of the album and during the course of the gig some fan fired a flare gun into the ceiling and the place caught fire...this could only ever happen at a Zappa gig :)

Simply an account of what happened | Reviewer: Blue | 12/6/08

This song was actually written to fill out 7 minutes left for an album (they had one day left) and the place they were performing at burnt to the ground because some fan with a flare gun.

So instead of going home they changed the grand hotel into a room, rushing to get the album finished up. Having one day left they were figuring out what to do. That is how smoke on the water came to be.

Re: losing the race | Reviewer: Dartigen | 2/24/08

I think that was a reference to the album they were trying to make in Montreaux. That's what the second verse was about - they took an old hotel and converted it into a studio, despite that it was never intended to be one. I saw a TV show (Classic Rock Albums, I think) that went over the entire song - before that, I never understood the second verse.

Sweet | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/23/08

This song is awesome. The acoustic version is pretty sweet too. Deep purple just went all out on this song. Deep purple dominates your crappy sissy band music.
