When you're playing a style of music that doesn't really
fit anywhere, you run a risk. You're challenging people to
leave their niche, to leave their predetermined ideas of
what they're supposed to like. Luckily, we have a lot of
people who just focus on the music and appreciate us for
what we are. So we get fans from all different genres of
music, the jocks, the spooky kids, skaters, college kids,
punk rockers, hardcore kids, metal kids, all that"
- Davey Havok
The origins and history of AFI are as humble as they are
passionate, beginning with the meaning and philosophy
behind the acronym now known to an ever-growing legion of
fans the world over: A Fire Inside.

I love AFI. they are so amazing! Every single word in each song seems to fit there so perfectly! I especially love this song because I as well feel sometimes that the people who suround you don't care about you or don't notice you. I thank AFI fo getting me through a lot of hard times in my life!

This song is purely beautiful, haunting, and enchanting. And yes if AFI was a painting is would be a true masterpiece. With Davey's amazing voice, beautiful instrumentals, and how it rocks out at the end is truely amazing. This song has a special place in my heart.

Ja to the ppl down below.... Emo isnt a stereotype its a type of music...and in Japanese, EMO means POTATO. :D sorry, just had to get that out. also, this song is awesome Afi is possibly my fave band of all time. XoXo, Liebe, Whatever, Bye.
fuck afi fans they all have no idea what they are talking about anymore all the kids that just found them from MTV and mainstream radio know nothing of the real AFI. and when were they Asking For It? they were Anthems For Insubordinates on Very Proud of Ya, and Answer That and Stay Fashionable if i recall correctly.

------ About the song Midnight Sun performed by A.F.I. (AFI)
The song is very Lovecraftian. Humans ask the queston, "what awaits beyond infinity." And whatever is beyond infinitiy, is saying "beyond and to all time i stand." and that being is probably evil. So awesome.

For the kid who asked about the correlation between morning star and lucifer, yeah, that's something I've thought about too, the chorus says it all man. also something to think about, Morning Star is also a name for Jesus.
for the kid who said AFi sold out after The Art of Drowning... kiss my ass. They didnt sell out, they've been experimenting with different sounds. Just because a band changes music styles doesn't mean they are selling out. so shut your fucking mouth before you open it next time and say something else retarded.

AFI's lyrics are just exquisitely written. Not only beautiful, but totally brilliant and...words can't even describe it. Davey Havok is a fucking incredible lyricist, poet, creator, GENIUS. Every song on this particular album is laced with vivid imagery. This album, this song...perfect examples of a masterpiece. It's orgasmically good haha. :)

------ About the song God Called In Sick Today performed by A.F.I. (AFI)
Lyrics and poetry in general, are normally open for interpretation. So anyone saying that there is one solid meaning for the song is mistaken. It means whatever you want it to mean. Davey (or whoever wrote it) may or may not have had one specific meaning in mind when he wrote this song, but it doesn't matter. If he said exactly what it meant, the song would be rendered meaningless to so many people who had already garnered their own meaning for it.
Phoenix Theater | Reviewer: Lindsey Marie
------ About the song Days of the Phoenix performed by A.F.I. (AFI)
This song is about the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, CA. I go there quite often actually. Davey talks about the ghost that haunts the balcony and the alleged underground tunnels beneath the venue. All true ghost stories around here and have been around for decades. Davey attends the phoenix regularly and a few years ago I saw him there just listening to music like everyone else. Truly inspiring that he still himself and fame hasn't gone to his head.

i had the same problem, I got the cd off Itunes thought but every song was messed up. For example when I played Clove Smoke Catharsis instead of the real song it played No Poetic Device, every song was like this. Porphyria Cutanea Tarda was actually Malleus Maleficarum and so on, I got so mad!
Oh well. AFI is and will always be my Favorite band, and this is one kickass song

C'mon guys! (and gals)
this is not old school AFI. This is post Black Sails, post All Hallow's EP, post Very proud of ya, and post whatever their first album was called. I reminisce on the days when AFI stood for Asking For It and not A Fire Inside. ugh.

------ About the song Morningstar performed by A.F.I. (AFI)
When I was about 12, I got into this band by my first love. This song especially holds such a deep place in my heart, despite their image now. Listening to it in just the right mood still brings tears to my eyes.
By the way, has anyone else wondered what the correlation between the lyrics and the title are? All I know is that "Morningstar" is another name for Lucifer.

------ About the song Miss Murder performed by A.F.I. (AFI)
It's not about one thing, it's examples that could be taken from a lot of things and so can be traced back to a lot of things.
That's why it's difficult to nail down what it's about -- it's about vague wondering questions that can't be answered. It's about rock stars, record labels, dictators and religion. Life in general; famous, infamous, ordinary or otherwise.
Mother, can I be immortal by leaving the physical world?
Death, can I live forever as I am now by stopping everything as it is?
What is the answer to the meaning of life?
What happens if I touch this button here?
Jesus (the heavens bowed before him) left the stars (physically) in the sky. Then he left us, and we wonder why he left us behind. (We wonder)
Lucifer (dreams of his crash) left the stars (mystically) in the sky. Those he left, they cry that he left them behind. (They lament)
What is the secret (hook, twist) not understood and hidden in the volumes of information (verbose mystery)?
I stake my life (afterlife) that faith in Jesus OR Satan (the ghost YOU love, YOUR ray of light) will let you down (fizzle out) and then what are you left with, nothing (no hope).
We are simply the spirits (empty set floating) temporarily material (wrapped in skin) always looking for the vague or the immaterial (what was promised (whatever that's supposed to be)) We're always trying for the unobtainable (the golden ring -- we'd never it let go (if we could possibly get it, that is)).
But we're just material beings, who'd of those powerful ones would ever let us get our "dirt of the Earth covered hands" on it in the first place?

afi is brilliant. and this song is too. why must everything and everyone be labled? "emo" means emotional. so people are in touch with thier feelings? at least they dont pretend to be numb insensitive assholes :]

------ About the song The Leaving Song performed by A.F.I. (AFI)
This song is not emo but seems to me to be about someone who is not trusted nor liked by his/her peers.Put yourself in the position of that person and you can feel the profound sadness of being isolated and alone. To put a label on such a strong message is pure sterotyping which one should never do because stereotypes arn't usually right. When people learn to feel and understand the music and lyrics, can they come to terms with themselves or alternatly, continue living a lie.

I'm sorry but, in my oppinion, this old music is shit. A ten year old could write this. Plus, all their old songs sound the same. My favourite music of theirs is when they were making "black sails" and "the art of drowning." So yeah I think this is shit and if you don't like that it's not my problem. PS its not even funny but I like mark (marc?) he's an awesome guitarist.

Let us hope that AFI will be able to return to their place at the top of the musical heap, and leave their perch alongside My Chemical Romance and Nightwish as bands that were once emotive and completely kickass, and are now just... emo.
uhm, no. | Reviewer: Helena
------ About the song Malleus Maleficarum performed by A.F.I. (AFI)
Wrong, dql. I;m sorry, but that's wrong. I don't know precisely what or where these trials occurred that you're referring to, but I think that was just the South of France. In America, i.e. Salem, they would first go through looking for a "witch mark" on the accused's body (a scar or other area that, when probed, would not give blood. This was believed to be where the devil touched you.) Often people were throwin into a lake with a rock tied to their ankle; if they floated, they were a witch, and damned to eternal hellfire if they had protested the "fact" previously. Oh, and they'd be killed.
