The Pixies centred around vocalist/guitarist/songwriter
Black Francis. Born Charles Thompson, he was often an
outsider at school as his father moved between pub jobs.
Contrary to the themes of some of their songs, he was never
much into the actual beach-surf-sun lifestyle of
California.
As Charles grew up, he learned how to play rock ‘n’ roll -
learning piano, drums and guitar, and finally taking bass
lessons from an uncle.
He learned to sing from the cousin of his employer at the
time - a rock star in his native Thailand, who told him,
“Scream it,” Charles recalled in a Sounds interview,
“scream it like you hate that bitch!”
Charles and Joey had both gone to college with the
intention of joining bands, and were More...

Review about Pixies
Sounds Like Teen Spirit? | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song U-Mass performed by Pixies
When Kurt Cobain said he ripped the Smells Like Teen Spirit riff off of a Pixies song, I'm pretty sure that this is it (listen during the chorus). Cobain and the Pixies were/are both brilliant.
RIP Kurt.

my favorite pixies song. i love the melodic guitar riff that reoccurs in the the song. Black's sweet vocals that shift from musical to rough barks and Deal's echoing chorus both send chills down my spine. I think basically everyone above got the meaning right

Critic, i dont see what you mean by "changes for the worst" on the second make no sense, i mean es it's not flowing but thats wha they wanted and it gives a little something to that part, and yes the end is amazing. you can hear the base line being a raw representation of the end through the whole song but it doesnt compares to the end which gets better every time you hear it.
A new light... | Reviewer: Jeremy
------ About the song Hey performed by Pixies
I agree that the song is pretty straight forward, but does require some thought. I think it there is a man who seeks love, but he does run into a lot of whores. He does find the woman he loves ("where have you been? if you go i will surely die"), and is "chained" to her, by love and later decides to have a baby ("uh is the sound that THE MOTHER MAKES WHEN HER BABY breaks." I know that when her water breaks, the baby is coming, so I figure when the baby breaks, it's born) Maybe the whole "... the whores like a choir go uh all night and mary ain't you tired of this" is referring to meaningless sex. So they decided to have something better (a baby).

------ About the song Caribou performed by Pixies
he's saying he hates his human body and wants to repent and live as a caribou. the knife part is saying he will be reincarnated as a caribou, and is up for it. it's not really obscure, just vague. how lame would it be if he said "i want to be a caribou. i dont like being human", etc. it's poetry you sillyheads
also, it's "i will get what i want".

------ About the song Hey performed by Pixies
This song's meaning is not at all complicated--it's pretty straight forward. A couple are "chained" together by a child. The man has an addiction to prostitutes (whores). Out of frustration the "mother" kills (breaks) her "baby". Shocking yes, but the Pixies' themes usually are.

the first reviwer nailed it. its intense....and we don't know why. knowing what the lyrics mean or in what context this song was created in wont make it go away. and thats what we want when we hear this song. we want that longing to just go away. but it wont, because its a part of us that we'll always have, like that longing we first experienced for raw sexual desire...not love.

I used to run the projectors for don levine and we would smoke some good weed while running those films in avant garde film. funny don would always wear the same black jacket. i went to school with BK during those classes. very funny.

It's down to opinion obviously but to me the vast majority of pixies songs were about the music and the voice is just another instrument to them. Obscure sometimes but you can find meaning in the words to some songs.
life ... | Reviewer: tory
------ About the song Hey performed by Pixies
It's about life. Sexual desire, the basics of sex, and the realities of sex - the underlying reasons we do it, ie: procreation. There's no mystical romance - we are all simply "chained' to the short-lived pleasures of sexual ecstasy, and Aren't you tired of it? (addresseed to "Mary)

------ About the song Hey performed by Pixies
in my p.o.v. i believe that its about a guy who is trying to find his true love and they are chained together thru their fate and theyre destined to b together but he cant find her and there are whores every where keeping them apart. and he is jus having sex for the hell of things but he is tired of this pointless sex.
or that he is with a girl but their relationship is ending and they had sumthing good and they are used to it but there is no more love between them so they are jus having sex. and he says " mary aren't u tired" as in tired of lying to ourselves about were this relationship is going.

------ About the song Debaser performed by Pixies
I go to UMass Amherst, where pixies members Black Francis and Joey Santiago went to college. As it just so happens, this song is actually about a class at UMass. It's about "Avante Gard Film and the Narrative" a class taught by Don Levine, and the films showcased in that class. One of the movies was "Chien Andalou", however this song came to be because of how Don Levine RUINS THE ENDING TO EVERY MOVIE YOU WATCH IN THAT CLASS. Black Francis used to get so angry he would stand up in the middle of the auditorium and yell at Levine... including a time he called Levine the "DEBASER!!!". So there.
a dope song | Reviewer: anonymous
------ About the song Gouge away performed by Pixies
holy shit. i get it now. even the verse about "pot" is still about samson and delilah and i presume her asking him questions about his hair and what not. hmm knowing that makes me love this song even more.

------ About the song Gouge away performed by Pixies
A friend from high school was dating the drummer at the time and her name is Missy. I wonder if she somehow inspired the "Missy Aggravation" line in the song?
Not quite | Reviewer: Talia
------ About the song Debaser performed by Pixies
The person above was almost correct in saying the song was inspired by a film called Un Chien Andalusia, but that's not the case. The film was co-made by Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel and it was actually called Un Chien Andalou. Not Andalusia. Frank Black wrote the song çause he liked the film and he thought andalou didn't sound right so he just changed it to andalusia for the song. The title for the movie translates to Andalusian Dog and the filmakers didn't connect the title in anyway to what they actually made the film about.

It is a Abrahamic myth indeed. Samson, after being captured, asked to be tied to the pillars in the entry to the city of Gaza, and comitted suicide on purpose, killing the Philistines while they were celebrating his confinement ("a 3 day party")
The Pixies were the-b-e-s-t.

------ About the song Alec Eiffel performed by Pixies
The song's flow keeps you listening and the repetition of 'little eiffel' in the background actually works. The Pixies cover up the awful change of pace ('keeping low doesnt make no sense') by adding excellent guitar work. However, Alec Eiffel would be only a 'good' song without the shift halfway through. The tune that is constantly repeated at the end will be stuck in your head for days and trust me, this is a good sign and it also sounds quite spiritual in a way. Not everything in Alec Eiffel is perfect however because the second time Black sings 'keeping low doesnt make no sense', the song's pace changes for the worst, but only for that small section. All in all, Alec Eiffel is an outstanding song, that is why we are still listening to it today. Well done!

------ About the song Where Is My Mind? performed by Pixies
Saw them years ago when my x drug me to a u2 show, which I hate. But the Pixies opened and kicked ass with inferior equipment and as far as I was concerned, the show was over when they went off.

------ About the song Where Is My Mind? performed by Pixies
I haven't had much exposure to the Pixies, unsung heros of the alternative scene
but if this song which ive onlypreviously heard through the 'Fight Club'finale
i'll be checking out more soon.
Black's cracked utterly unique vocals and Kim's ethereal backup whimpers
certainly establish one hell of an atmosphere and the guitar rythmn is unforgettable.
(you wanna try another song about being detached from your own head, though uh far more downbeat try Radiohead's 'How to dissapear completely' :)
