Stridently from California's fertile Central Valley, this Sacramento band has attracted the kind of ecstatic response most newcomers only dream of and seasoned veterans justifiably envy. Based almost entirely on the strength of their live performances and on word of mouth, CAKE has built up a sizable following that is fast billowing out of the northern California region in a sort of reckless eastward expansion. With the release of their new CD, MOTORCADE OF GENEROSITY, there is emerging a sound of non-negotiable high quality (not necessarily high fidelity); a juggernaut of true musical enjoyment, virtually unfettered by the uptight and unyieldingly narrow confines of genre and fad which make most music so disposable and landfills so plentiful. I think she is dropping him by telling him they could be/stay friends which sends him back to his own feelings. So he tries to make her change her mind : it is revealed at the end of the song when he sings "I'm really only praying... you feel about me". The word "friend" is associated to the idea of "end" by sonorities. It appears that he loses something. Firstly, the bitter loss he feels is rendered through the tonalities of the song once we listen to it and the lexic he chooses tallies too : "morbid", "absurd". These two adjectives are peculiar here since they described the way he thinks he is seen by fellows. It comes from his reaction to the word "friend". It is not in essence a pejorative term but in this case, it means the end of what he feels for her so he just can't stand this idea. They were great showmen and had the crowd involved throughout their 2 sets and encore. I really appreciate a humble band who states apparently every show "We are Cake We are here to serve YOU. Thank you for listening to our music" I really truly felt that he was absolutely sincere when he said this. I guess in the end thats all that matters....... I will def see them again in the future. I frankly don't care if they ever reach "pop" status. Being on the fringe keeps them sharp and inventive. Comfort Eagle is indeed one of their best, included on one of their best. It's all good though. I've enjoyed many of their live performances, and am looking forward to yet another when they appear at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium in beautiful Lowell, Massachusetts in May 2009. This song is written so ambiguously that it can be interpreted any which way one chooses. McCrea does an excellent job wording his propositions in just the right way so that anyone can relate, regardless of their circumstances. For example, there are countless four letter words in the english dictionary, including love, hate, kill, life, gone, and (of course) f@$k. "end is the only part...that I heard" He doesn't specify whether "end" is the only part of the four letter word, or is the only part of the word friend. There's no way this is about him only liking her as a friend. I can only think that he means he's hoping that someday she'll admit to him that she feels like he does about her. He loves her. That's what he's getting at with the other two parts. To him, whenever she refers to him as a friend he thinks of it as "love" rather than only as "friend". He realizes this but hates it. Comfort Eagle is an amazing album. Too bad this never became a single (it was going to be, but then 9/11 happened and they thought this song might offend people... It's put together well, it's catchy, and it means something.
