In the Beginning
Ronnie van Zant was the oldest of 3 and hailed from the
tough west side of Jacksonville, Florida, in an area where
fighting was a normal pastime. He first started singing in
a Gospel Church Women's Choir, but there was another type
of music that Ronnie Van Zant wanted. One he pieced
together from various musical influences in his life:
Shorty Medlocke (Father of Rick Medlocke of the band
Blackfoot) was a former sharecropper who played a scrappy
style of "Swamp Music" that Ronnie Van Zant became familiar
with.

At the age of 16, Ronnie Van Zant was approached by the

Forrest Gump OST. | Reviewer: Zack
------ About the song Freebird performed by Lynyrd Skynyrd

The 1st time i heard this song, was on the movie forrest gump! It played on a scene that i think was the most powerfull scene in the whole movie. It took me to another place - words cant express what i felt. Immedietly after the movie i had a mission to find the misterious song. I believe the song played a big part in ma lyf and it made me the man i am today.

        ------ About artist/band Lynyrd Skynyrd

I have seen LS numerous times. I have seen them w/ Hank Jr. ZZ TOP just to name a few. The original band only recorded for 3 yrs but they wrote songs everyone can relate to. We will never know what could have happened if the original line up was still around.

        ------ About artist/band Lynyrd Skynyrd

One hit wonders.I was too young to know of them in the 70's so I can only go on what they are today and that is an inbred red neck, southern fried crap appealing to the lowest common denominator.
Skynyrd Nation is a knuckle dragging, mouth breathing,Colt 45 swilling, flag waving, gun toting,toothless,mullet-headed inbred mental defectives whose idea of freedom is stuffing their face with Big Macs, masturbating to the bible and watching cars make a constant left hand turn for 5 hours.
    Skynyrd and their fans suck.

Someone stop them, they are awful. | Reviewer: Walter
        ------ About artist/band Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd 1973-1975, Great Band (NO Led Zeppelin, give me a break, in fact Skynyrd has always been far more hypocritical when it came to drugs and violence), swamp country blues meets British Hard Rock with a touch of trad country. Original sound in the Southern Rock Fad. 1976- transition, but still writing some great songs (under-rated Gimme Back My Bullets), but with the wrong producer. 1977, Van Zant goes too country but the band is saved by Steve Gaines and their own control in the studio. Flash forward - 1987 to present, Truly dumb rednecks who kick out the most talented (Ed King), lose the most charming (Leon Wilkeson) and gain a no-talent dumb hick (Johnny Van Zant) as leader. Absolutely horrible, music for dumb rednecks, which you prove by saying anyone that hates Skynyrd isn't from the south. On behalf of all the people not from the south, keep these idiots to yourelves. And I worshipped them as a kid. Plane crash - tragic. Regrouping- pathetic. Skynyrd just plain sucks.

------ About the song Tomorrow's Goodbye performed by Lynyrd Skynyrd

Who would have believed it? An environmental song by Lynyrd Skynyrd! Well, if you know the band, then you would know that this is not the first time they've sung about the killing of our planet. In 1976 they released "All I Can Do Is Write About It", a slow country ballad lamenting the slow creep of the concrete.

In this tradition, the 'new' skynyrd has created a beautiful, powerful, sweeping ballad in Tomorrow's Goodbye. Johnny Van Zant's vocals are pushed to the absolute limit, but he carries it off beautifully and backed by the ever tight, clever and interwoven guitar, bass, and keyboard parts, this song is the real deal. I would not be surprised if Greenpeace or some other green lobby did not pick this up as their theme song. They might be dropping like flies and aging beyond recognition, but these guys have still go what it takes, and are still making sense. I wonder if anyone will listen.

Truly, the best "band" on earth | Reviewer: John Springer
        ------ About artist/band Lynyrd Skynyrd

I was in "high school", when Lynyrd Skynyrd first came out and started buying their albums and still am, and I'm 52 yrs. old now. I think that they are the "best" band ever and since "my" mother was born in Missouri than I have a little bit of the south life in me, than that is probably the reason I love Lynyrd Skynyrd. I am very sorry for all of the people that the band, has lost, over the years! I went and saw them in concert, for my first time and enjoyed them. Anyway, I hope that the band keeps going, forever!

    Dichotomy | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Tuesday's Gone performed by Lynyrd Skynyrd

Tuesday isn't the name of the woman. Tuesday is when she left. However, she's not leaving permanently, because she's "still at home". He doesn't seem to be leaving permanently either, as he says "when this train ends I'll try again." He needs time to think. He needs to be alone. He's stuck in between continuing to try to stay with her and just leaving it all behind. However, the reference to the specific day she left might point to a hidden reference of the fact that he's not gone permanently, but just for the "blues day". He's pretty much taking the day off and this song was written right in the middle of the apex of his polar emotions. That's why it seems like a dichotomy exists in the song. Neither his staying or his going is finalized. It's a song of the moment.

    Dear Savannah, | Reviewer: Valhalla
------ About the song Sweet Home Alabama performed by Lynyrd Skynyrd

I also love classic rock and think you are spot on about pop music today. To me it's crap. It's not even real music anymore. It's just noises produced by a computer. The Who's song: long live rock said "long live rock... Be it dead or alive." I agree, long live rock but, I'm afraid it's dead. The last great bands were #1 nirvana. Then the foo fighters, STP, Alice in chains, etc. I think alternative was rocks last hoorah.

And on the other hand you have Sweet Home Alabama" Also one of the greatest songs of all time." How Can't you love songs about love heartbreak, and also this song is a song you can party to all night long.

        ------ About artist/band Lynyrd Skynyrd

I loved Skynard every since I was 14. I am 51. I have all the origianl albums and in my car is every CD. Tuesday's Gone with the wind is off the chain. But to truly listen to the real skynard, listen to Am I Losing......The music they play will be in my soul till I leave this world and Freebird will be played at my funeral. Still to this day no one can play like Allen Collins, truly one of the greatest. Ever

------ About the song Freebird performed by Lynyrd Skynyrd

The first time I really heard this song was when my best friend and other guys played it, I felt it. But now I can't hear it without cry, my best friend was killed 4 months ago and, and for some reason, the song that most remind me of him is Freebird.

What it's all about. | Reviewer: Confederate Boy
------ About the song Saturday Night Special performed by Lynyrd Skynyrd

Look guys we can bicker and fight all decade about wether handguns need to be banned. But that is not what we are bloging about (correct me if I'm wrong). This is about the song and how good it is and what it means. I personally believe that this song is not that simple. It's rather accusing people's evil ways and how the handgun is used to acomplish it. It is probably more a lesson on how we as the human race should be more careful and more considerate of our lives and the lives of those around us. But it is not necesarily anti guns.

I saw them this past summer with two original members Billy Powell who died yesterday on piano and guitarist Gary Rossington and they were amazing. And whoever said Lynyrd Skynyrd sucks;sucks wiener.         ------ About the song Freebird performed by Lynyrd Skynyrd

It´s hard to finally write something like: "This song is so awesome that it´s stupid to try and put into words what you can feel while listening to it" and most will read it as a default comment, without much thought put into it. But I mean each and every word to the fullest. This song touches your soul.
