Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel gained fame and notoriety in
the 1960's via their aptly-titled duo, Simon & Garfunkel.
Over the course of 6 years (1964-1970), the pair made
folk-rock a serious art form, expanding upon the paths
tread by such luminaries at the Everly Brothers, Bob Dylan,
Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton and Peter, Paul and Mary.
The Beginning
Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel both grew up in Kew Gardens,

------ About the song I Am a Rock performed by Simon and Garfunkel
Yes, the last 2 lines are irony, in the futility of attempting to insulate oneself from the world and the pain inflicted by others, the betrayal of supposed friends, walling oneself away, and finding that loneliness is nearly as bad as people. And one cries.
Not only is the song beautiful but timeless as well! Simon & Garfunkel did indeed take the musical score and created lyrics for it. The music (without lyrics) is called, El Condor Pasa.
It was composed in 1913, by Daniel Alomia Robles, from Peru. The title "El Condor Pasa", is for some wierd reason, roughly translated in english, as "The Flight of the Condor" Which if you translate that title to spanish it means, "El Vuelo Del Condor". Even if you don't know spanish, one can clearly see that it is a very different phrase. But the rough translation does not take away from it's beauty. I invite anyone that likes this song, to visit YouTube and search for "El Condor Pasa - CantoAndino".
You will see this original song, performed by a contemporary Peruvian Folk Band! Hope you like it! Thank you for your time! And best of luck to you Rebecca!
We were visiting our missionary son and family in Haiti last week and at a beautiful Haitian church service, this song was sung in Creole. I recognized the tune but could not figure out which song until later. It was so beautiful and sung in reverance. I doubted they sang these words and possibly changed the words to the tune. Is it possible this tune was/is another song that Simon and Garfunkel just used the music and created the lyrics? Thank you.

------ About the song Feuilles-O performed by Simon and Garfunkel
We just returned from visiting our missionary son and family near Les Cayes, Haiti and went to a large church in Simone' (sp?). Over 1,000 Haitians sang a song that was so familiar but we couldn't place it till later when I said it's from S & G! Aware they probably were not using those lyrics I went on a search and found the orign of the tune El Candor Pasa, and then this web page. Piti means child as we used that word often. I believe some of the previous reveiwers are close as far as "sick me", perhaps tears, etc. as that would make sense as a Christian song. It was soooo beautiful I cried. Thanks.

It sounds like returning to the past, when on earth was no civilization. Herewith it's impossible to get back, the world is moving forward. Too much nostalgic. Missing nature and missing human-being as a part of nature.

It was actually written by Mike Batt (the guy who sang, wrote and produced songs for The Wombles) and it was part of the soundtrack for Watership Down in 1978. It was also the biggest selling single of 1979 in the UK.

One of my favorite S+G songs. The words in the opening - "A winter's day. In a deep and dark December; I am alone, Gazing from my window to the streets below. On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow" shows that Paul Simon is a masterful poet who trys to paint an image of loneliness.

I've loved this song since I was 12, and that was a long time ago. It's evocative of deep woods moss, moist mushrooms, and it conveys an ineffable sense of loss. I could never Quite make out all the lyrics; it's kinda strange seeing them here in b&w.

It honestly never occurred to me that this was supposed to be taken seriously. The sadness in his voice in the last part of the song makes it seem pretty obvious that it's mocking the point of view expressed earlier in the song, at least to me. Think what you want.

Amazing song writters, they are the best. Im in my early 30s and I prefer music from this era as opposed to current music because its real. They wrote most of it and sang it themselves. Someone else didnt write it, or sing it for them. Listening to it takes me back to my childhood and I picture my parents in their younger days, and myself, so little and carefree!

If you like this one with those nifty back ground lyrics, I suggest you find and listen to their "Silent Night/6 O'clock News"...It just might give you chills.
As for this one--one internet site (I forget which)suggests that parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme was an ancient "morning after" remedy to prevent pregnancy.

the wording, the harmony, the fact that it is naked guitar and vocals. automatically makes the song really real and personal. Very bittersweet, it puts you right in the place and time and feeling of the song. The lyrics are very well written, and make your soul become this person with their struggle. One of my favorites at the moment

Beautiful. So beautiful it reigns in my head. I was going to Scarborough the other day, and this song suddenly came into my mind...It's beautiful.
I'm sixteen at the moment I'm posting this. Can't be helped, but I listen to Simon&Garfunkel, the Beatles, Bee Gees, all those sweet old things. Scarborough Fair is one of those I love most.
Is it really, you know, about the Vietnam war? Just being curious, because, well, I'm from Vietnam.

------ About the song AMERICAN TUNE performed by Simon and Garfunkel
the music follows predictable melodic patterns and modulations, but is redeemed by the lyrics which mirror the weltschmerzen and disenchantment with icons in these `dark ages`. Yet they are also intensely personal in their pain and resignation and the song ends on a marvellously unsentimental, even curt note. My favourite of all S&G songs

I have to completely agree with the other reviews. This song can relate to everyone in their own way. I am only 17, this song was written 40 years ago, and I can relate to it in ways. If you havn't been through the things in this song yourself, you know someone who has, and it makes you appreciate what you have got and makes the small problems in your life feel simpler. I love Simon & Garfunkel and long live their repituar.
