IN his childhood, Lou Reed longed to play rock and roll — a
common dream, perhaps, but Reed was different. By his
teens, he had learned to play guitar, had made his first
record, had alienated his suburban parents, and had been
subjected to electro-shock therapy. During these years,
Reed's parents insisted that he take typing lessons so that
he would develop a saleable skill, but that didn't seem to
cure him of his rock and roll aspirations.
As much as he could, Reed tried to live the straight and
narrow: he went to college at Syracuse University in New
York; he joined the R.O.T.C. (he was kicked out for
threatening to shoot an officer); after graduating, he took
a post with Pickwick Records as a staff songwriter, and
tried to pen Top 10 hits. But he never seeme More...

fantastic song by a brilliant artist. His songs have standed the test of time and he still continues to create beautiful pieces of writing. my favourite song of his would have to be perfect day, and how it describes his emotional state when referring to cocaine
New Sensations | Reviewer: Nevermore
------ About the song New Sensations performed by Lou Reed
It's not "Some people are like human toulinols". I don't think toulinol is a word. It's actually "human Tuinals". A Tuinal is a barbiturate (secobarbital and amobarbital) that was used recreationally from the 1960's to the 1980's, now it's off the market. Like many other barbs for that matter...
Wild Child | Reviewer: Susan Bruce
------ About the song Wild Child performed by Lou Reed
Okay - I started off looking up this site for an 8 year old abused child and I've spent most of the night on it (please don't print this one cos she'll be looking...) Anyway - I've spent most of the night o it and thoroughly enjoyed myself so thank you. I wanted to finish up so I was looking for a favourite at the end of the alphabet and I was torn between this and Wait - I love them both! That's where I'm heading then I really mus go lol. Well done for creating a brilliant site.
Red Joystick | Reviewer: Susan Bruce
------ About the song My Red Joystick performed by Lou Reed
Another one with Reed at his humourous best - I was surprised that the woman I knew best down in London (she was a junkie and a nymphomaniac and was neglecting her kid which was how I got involved - I couldn't stand her but the child deserved a shot) anyway - it never occurred to her the obvious as to what red joystick meant lol

The last note I wrote to you was about a junkie's kid I used to look after - this was her favourite song of Reed's - her mum liked the one "shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a quaalude" see?
My Old Man | Reviewer: Susan Bruce
------ About the song My Old Man performed by Lou Reed
Yeah, this one was close to home for him, despite him saying that he doesn't ean his lyrics - yu can see the element of truth there. I'm female and I worshipped my adoptive mother until a certain age - probably about te same age as he realised that his dad was a bully - so was my mother - I think that's why I always identified with him so much. This is a brilliant song...
Make Up | Reviewer: Susan Bruce
------ About the song Make Up performed by Lou Reed
Now I'll let you into a secret - when I was 14 this came out and my adoptive mother loved the song - she fancied herself in the role of the "slick little girl" I was already into the gay scene and took great pleasure in explaining to her what "coming out of the closets" really meant...
Love is here to stay | Reviewer: Susan Bruce
------ About the song Love Is Here To Stay performed by Lou Reed
This is Reed at his witty best isn't it? I thought it was - est and the rest but I could be wrong... Still - they're gilt edged polymorphous urban but somehow it works - nobody but Reed could come out with a line like that - classic!!!
Legendary Hearts | Reviewer: Susan Bruce
------ About the song Legendary Hearts performed by Lou Reed
This is another favourite but - look for the deliberate mistake (I assume, giving Reed the benefit of the doubt, that it's deliberate and aimed at the American audience). Journalists applaud his use of language but I'm in one mind with John Cale on that, who spent years trying in vain to teach him English. Okay, I know that's what he studied in University but really - I'm uneducated but I know my whys from my wherefores, as my granddad used to say lol
Leave Me Alone | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Leave Me Alone performed by Lou Reed
Now, this brings back great memories - I think he was performing in Hammersmith, North London, when this album was due out and for the first two nights he included Leave Me Alone in the set. The third night, he came on late (as he always did!) and, after the usual routine went through every song on the new album - people had to go home - by the time he was halfway through the tube had stopped running - as for me, I walked the 9 miles home lol
Hello it's me | Reviewer: Susan Bruce
------ About the song Hello It's Me performed by Lou Reed
I know you're going to get sick of hearing from me tonight but, I only just discovered this site - I was looking it up for an 8 year old girl I've just got to know who's mad about LR. The whole Songs for Drella thing makes me sick - okay, there's good stuff on it but, what was meant to be a tribute to Andy Warhol turned out to be a slanging match between Reed and Cale, the former mostly to blame I suspect, and his attitude stinks on some songs - this one "your diaries aren't a worthy epitaph" - like Warhol knew he was going to die and it was a premeditated attack. I've read the diaries and Reed hurt him badly. And as for the song about Valerie "I would have pulled the switch on her myself" - did he learn nothing from Warhol? He PAINTED the electric chair...
Heavenly Arms | Reviewer: Susan Bruce
------ About the song Heavenly Arms performed by Lou Reed
I loved and hated him for this one - it's a beautiful love song but did he have to include "only a woman can love a man"? Not that long since Rachel, after all. A betrayal to a lot of gay people...
Edgar Allen Poe | Reviewer: Susan Bruce
------ About the song Edgar Allan Poe performed by Lou Reed
Just wanted to remark - thanks a heap for this site - as well as bringing back some fantastic memories it's also opened my eyes to some of what Reed's been doing since I last listened to him (the funereal album put me right off - Magic and Lies? What's magic about losing someone you love?) The above however is a classic - I can tell that by the lyrics alone, plus there's others I've discovered. The only album I've bought of his since Magic and Lies was the latest instrumental one, since Metal Machine Music was a favourite, but it's crap, I can't listen to it...
Common Ground | Reviewer: Susan Bruce
------ About the song Good Evening Mr.Waldheim performed by Lou Reed
Oh, I was always in two minds about this one: I didn't like Jesse Jackson for most of the reasons he states except the PLO bit - but then, even Norman Mailer's unreasonable when it comes to Israel... Nevertheless, Jackson was by far the best alternative at the time and I think Lou Reed was unfair to him for that reason alone - what about the others?

this has to be one of lou's best and most poingnient song to date. an appology and a last goodbye to a great friend and a bitter grief of unfinished arguments.manny good and bad memories.of a crazy time.. a true and real worthy epitaph to a great and very missunderstood genius.i think andy would approve.rest in peace lost man.
LOU REED GENIUS!! | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Perfect Day performed by Lou Reed
Just sittin in boring work here, when I thought of this classic track, as a way of escapn the monotony I suppose! I think someone told me this was about Heroin use..either way its amazing..it can relate to everyone's experiences in life, particularly when one must endure a day that isn't so perfect.
These are actual lyrics with an actual idea behind them, as opposed the crap being written today dripping with sentimentality and criminal behavior. These actually approach a poetry of self like Rimbaud or Beaudelaire
Magic and loss is one of the most powerfull song/ lyrics I know. I think few will acknowledge Lou Reed's true greatness. The song is about a inner journey, a transformation. The lyrics have so many layers and everytime I listen to it I understand it al little bit more. The song will be on my funeral, hopefully that will be some time from now.
