Lyrics - The Clash Lyrics
| |
Mick Jones had a band called London S.S. with Bernard
Rhodes who would become later The Clash's manager. Paul
Simonon joined the London S.S. at its last legs. After,
they decided to start all over again in a new band. Mick
Jones decided to teach Paul Simonon how to play guitar, but
as Paul had never played that instrument, it was too
difficult for him. So they decided he should play bass,
"because it's easier and has only four strings", as Paul
said once.
They got Keith Levene as another guitarist and Terry Chimes
as drummer. Bernard Rhodes was becoming the band's manager.
Paul and Mick met Joe Strummer once, and Bernard asked him
if he would like to join the band. Joe Strummer had another
band (called The 101'ers) and was more musically
experienced than the ot More...

Casbah and Sharif | Reviewer: Melissa
------ About the song Rock the Casbah performed by The Clash
First of all I have looked up the lyrics to this song and it is Sharif which by the way if your smart and actually look up the definitions of the words Sharif means a prince..... and Casbah is a palace or castle. For all of you whom are arguing the pronunciation of words you know nothing about I recommend you learn to look up things you do not know. Next time check the dictionary when you have things to question and don't make an assumption because then you could be falsely educating other people about something and that is how things throughout history get mis represented and inacurately spoken of!
Nuclear error and more | Reviewer: Chuck
------ About the song London Calling performed by The Clash
I too am fortunate enough to still have all my vinyl and the precious info packaged with the jacket - I so miss those! Just wanted to confirm nuclear error, but also, alluding to London in WWII, radio signal for news was at top of the dial and London sent out the air raid sirens that could be heard in the small towns. Remember your history classes, the details are spelled out in lyrics such as come out of your cupboards. Why I came here and put this post now- Werewolves of London, released by Warren Zevon a year previous, 1978, is homaged with the werewolf cries during the middle eighth of London Calling. Cool trivia for younger people exploring past music and that song in particular because of Kid Rock's sampling of Werewolves in his current Sweet Home rip off hit. At least it has kids checking out the real thing and that's sweet.

------ About the song Rock the Casbah performed by The Clash
lol. a casbah is a marketplace you guys. its just the center of the citadel.there are no Algerians. it's just about ayatollah khomeni's disapproval of western culture in Iran and the oil crisis of the 70s.
You are the stupid one. | Reviewer: What
------ About the song Rock the Casbah performed by The Clash
This song talks about how Iran outlawed western music. The Sharif a.k.a. the leader doesn't like the music being played. He bans it but people still play it behind his back. So he sends his jet fighters to bomb those who play the music but the pilots also like the music. Casbah means like a fortress. Basically, it's rock the fortress even if the leader doesn't like it. It's my interpretation of the song.
wonder why? | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Safe European Home performed by The Clash
Sitting here in my safe european office, Mickey, I'm wondering why people think Americans are dense. Was the reference to every white face being an invitation to robbery, the natty dreads at the Sheraton, or the Rudie come from Jamaica part that made you think this song was about America?
Sharif | Reviewer: Bosco
------ About the song Rock the Casbah performed by The Clash
Sharīf (Arabic: شريف) is a traditional Arab tribal title given to those who serve as the protector of the tribe and all tribal assets, such as property, wells, and land. The feminine form is sharifa(h).

------ About the song Death is a Star performed by The Clash
I love the beginning; the "I was gripped *Clicks fingers* by that deadly phantom." I believe it's about the fact that people escape their daily lives through movies and they don't mind seeing a little bit of death and destruction - it excites them.

White Riot They don't write songs like this anymore | Reviewer: randy thomson
------ About the song White Riot performed by The Clash
This song has stood the test of time. The first punk song I ever heard besides Love's"7 and & Is" it still sounds fresh, more than thirty years later. The Clash were, for a few years there, "The only band that mattered." There's so much energy in the song, singing simple, but effective lyrics, and Mick Jones was just beginning to show what he could pull off on guitar. They shouldn't have let their egos get in the way and tear themselves apart. They were needed long after we had to play their old stuff to hear something that meant anything.
Not a clash song.. | Reviewer: monkey
------ About the song Tainted Love performed by The Clash
Nope. The Clash *NEVER* did this song. Definately not a released version. I can find no evidence anywhere that The Clash ever did this song in concert or otherwise.. the wikipedia article was most likely corrected because of this error. It's wrong on a lot of places on the net - mostly the robot lyrics sites. If someone could correct me, i'd appreciate it.

------ About the song Complete Control performed by The Clash
I just heard this song last night and I'm wild for it. This is a punk rock standard; you can hear how everyone else steals from this song. I'm really seeing the power of the Clash. Mick and Joe are absolutely amazing. I wish I knew what Joe was saying at the end, though, like the other post asked haha
Searching for the Soul of America | Reviewer: Dave
------ About the song Gates of the West performed by The Clash
I think Jones is saying he wanted to create music that tapped into the heart and soul of America in the way that early rock and roll did - people like Little Richard, Elvis, Chuck Berry, etc. Those guys were legends that changed the world by tapping into some fundamental burning passion and meaning within the hearts of Americans (and more broadly the world since America is a land of immigrants, i.e. the great "melting pot") and gave it a voice and a means of expression. However, when the Clash wrote the song it was time for something new to be the next great wave of music but, Mick Jones (who I assume wrote it) thinks the Clash can't quite get there because while they have some understanding of American music and culture, they still are outsiders with one foot in "the East" (in this case Europe or the rest of the world) who can't fully understand America and write something so powerful that it will help bring America forward in the way that Rock and Roll did. To do that the Clash would have to have been raised in America and absorbed from birth the collective experience of America, its history and its rich diversity created by all the immigrants who came here over the years and shaped it into what it became. The Clash can get close but not all the way there. This reminds me of U2's Rattle and Hum which to me was U2's attempt to plumb the soul of America and write about it in all its greatness and flaws. Contrary to the theme of Gates of the West, I think Rattle and Hum shows that sometimes outsiders have the perspective to understand things better than the "insiders" (i.e. artists that grew up in the US). And of course, it's the mixing of cultures and traditions (both within and between countries) that has created the greatest music, as evidenced by bands like the Beatles and the Stones, who took American Rockabilly and Blues and added their British perspective to it, with unparalleled results that speak for themselves.

------ About the song Safe European Home performed by The Clash
I've actually read that this song is about how Joe went to Jamaica and found out it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. They were always trying to rip him off and just saw him as white scam fodder.
I originally thought it was about the U.S. before reading the lyrics too, but now that idea really makes no sense at all.
