b. Gary Anthony James Webb, 8 March 1958, Hammersmith,
London, England. Originally appearing under the group name
Tubeway Army, Numan enjoyed enormous success in the UK at
the close of the 70s. His Kraftwerk / David Bowie
-influenced electronic music saw Tubeway Army top the UK
charts in May 1979 with Are Friends Electric?
By September 1979 Numan abandoned the group pseudonym for
the follow-up single Cars which also topped the UK charts
and reached the US Top 10. At his peak, Numan was one of
the bestselling artists in Britain and his albums The
Pleasure Principle and Telekon both entered the charts at
number 1. His science fiction-orientated lyrics and
synthesizer-based rhythms brought further Top 10 successes
with We Are Glass, I Die: You Die, She's Got Claws More...

------ About the song Metal performed by Gary Numan
trent did a few covers, the adam and track "physical", the "supernaut" track by sabbath and ofcourse the gary numan cover. but this review isnt about NiN. gary does some good synth work, alot of people like covering it, down in the park for instance. i like doin covers of numans work with my copy of Reason, always fun to try it in a different format of genre, much like how richard cheese does some covers of alt/nu-metal/rock songs in his jazzy lounge-pianist manner. bottom line is the numan track is good, the covers make it better
Undoubtably the best Numan song that was ever written. It has always been my favourite, and what makes it more special and touching is that Numan, wrote it as a
tribute to his friend and bass player Paul Gardiner, who tragically passed away in 1984 of a drug over dose. Thank you Gary Numan. RIP Paul Gardiner, see you in the reserrection.

------ About the song Crazier performed by Gary Numan
One of the best tracks on the "Hybrid" double album, done with a fabulous under-rated artiest named Rico. Great sound to, I recommend checking out the Crazier single versions (specifically the "slide mix")
this was my husbands and my first dance song at our wedding. the lyrics are exactly how we feel about each other. i will "love him 4ever and a day, i'll love him till god comes and takes me away".
i never knew Numan had wrote such a heartfelt love song as his lyrics are usually so dark.
the best love song ever by far...xxxx

------ About the song Time To Die performed by Gary Numan
leave it to Gary Numan, whose music seems a fitting meld of goth and science fiction to create a piece of music that captures the atmosphere of arguably one of the greatest science fiction films of all time. One of the final scenes of this classic film takes place between Rutger Hauer (arguably his best performance aside from "Blood of Heroes") and Harrison Ford, in which Hauer's "replicant" character's "life clock" has finally run out. He has only enough time to tell of things he has seen and how his memories are all lost now, "Like tears in rain. Time to die.", and with that, he expires. This song does indeed capture the feeling of regret and loss in the dreamy soundscape of keyboards and synthesized vocals that are Numan's forte. It's a beautiful, haunting song and leads one to suspect that Numan would be well sought out to compose a soundtrack for the right project (besides "Dark City", of course...)

these songs transend that age of synth pop. Especially halo with its dark tones and vibrant drum sounds.

------ About the song Complex performed by Gary Numan
If you are moved by Gary’s sadder, introspective songs, Complex stands as one the defining workpieces in that area. Present throughout is that sweet string voicing used everywhere in the Pleasure Principle album, but in Complex, they seem to sing along with Gary in a counterpoising, aching melody. As for Gary, in his typical-for-that-era high-pitched nasal tone, he outlines for us his feelings of alienation and mistrust in some of his most (for me) creatively simple and brief, yet meaningful, verses. Gary has always been able to evoke a strong reaction out of me with the simplest of lines, and in Complex he implores towards the end, “Please keep them away - Don't let them touch me. Please don't let them lie - Don't let them see me.” When this album came out, this one verse basically said it all for me, in terms of my feelings towards humanity and the pain that always resulted from my involvement with them. Like Gary, I have grown and warmed with age, but this song for me is still like going to some secret place, by myself, and watching over the world from a distance, unknown to them.
His Dark Matrerials? | Reviewer: Digideus
------ About the song Dark performed by Gary Numan
Quite when Gary became the God-hating new era industrialist he is now is unclear, although his personal traumas has been well documented on "Exile" and "Pure". This then, is possibly a highpoint of his catharsis, summed up in his darkest works. They sum up the feelings of cynicism and the disenchantment for religion of generation X, Y and Z. Surely, it is no small feat that his works in this period made perfect sense lyrically and provided a change of focus in his music toward darker realms.
This track was used in the movie "Dark City", which was a surreal and fantastic voyage into the realms of fantasy, yet at its core, as with this material, there are deep seated questions that demand answers. Where are those answers? Not where humanity has looked so far, obviously, and this songs achievements are a fine thing to sum up inside of four and a half minutes!
Gary Numan has always pushed the envelope in some way, often creating amazing musical dirge with his seemingly unrelenting genius. Thing is, this song sounds like a musical accident, however, the end result is one of his most accomplished pieces of the time. This song, with its haunting synth melody and minimalistic rhythm is the perfect vehicle for the lyric, and the Saxaphone break in the last minute of the song is inspired. Not a happy song by any means, but Gary knows where his strengths lie and, for the time this song was made, reinforces it. Nothing short of a masterpiece.
One of my all time favorite songs, lyrically beautifully deep and sad, brings emotions to a new level.

------ About artist/band Gary Numan
Gary Anthony James Webb was born at 10:30PM on the 8th of March 1958 in Hammersmith, London. originally lead singer of the punk pop band Tubeway Army, Gary's first album was released in 1978. But he did not enjoy chart success until 1979. Accidently discovering an abandoned Mini Moog in a recording studio had prooved a massive favour, Webb had written his own electronic album in under a week, and by 1981 he (now under the solo pseudonym Gary Numan) had enjoyed 2 number 1 singles (Cars, and Are "Friends" Electric) and 3 number albums (Replicas, The Pleasure Prinicple, and Telekon.)Other hits include We Are Glass, She's Got Claws, and We Take Mystery (To Bed).
As the decade progressed his record sales steadily declined and his glum-robotic persona was replaced by that debonair man-about-town who also enjoyed aviation. In March 1982 he attempted to fly around the world in his light aircraft and was arrested in India on suspicion of spying. The charge was later dropped, and he soon completed his journey. While his reputation among music critics atrophied amid accusations of anachronism, his fan base remained solid, though his recordings continued to reach the lower placings in the UK charts.
1994 brought the release of the industrial-tinged "Sacrifice", the first glimmering of Numan's return to critical favor and underground hipness. Over the next few years, many highly accaimed bands were covering Numan and citing him as a massive infulence: NIN, Foo Fighter, Marilyn Manson, Sugar Babes, Basement Jaxx, Smashing Pumpkins, Beck, and many more.
"Exile" and "Pure" were to follow, both massively popular in underground industrial music, and critically accalimed. chart success was to follow again, the highest single reaching #13 in the UK charts with Crazier, a Gary Numan vs "Glaswegian rocker" Rico track.
Gary's latest album: "Jagged" was released on the 15th March 2006. An album launch gig took place at The Forum, London on 18 March followed by successful UK, European and US tours. Gary is now 49 years old, he is married to Gemma O'neil (always an avid fan of Gary's) and has recently had a thired daughter; Echo, to join Raven and persia. He is now praised as the Godfather of the synthesizer, an electro pioneer, and will be creating brilliant albums for years to come.

------ About the album Jagged performed by Gary Numan
Numan is still as brilliant as ever. Remarkably his albums get better ever time. Jagged is excellent. Anthemic huge choruses and typical Numan synthesizer innovations. A friend and I saw him about a year ago at Wolverhampton and he was brilliant.
27 years I've been a fan...God bless Gary and family.

Numan's newest work is awesome! Heavier, darker and more personal than his older albums, all the songs are just as entrancing and rhythmic. Gary's smooth lyrical style blends into the instrumentation and catchy rhythms. This album is fresh, up-to-date and very addictive.

------ About the song A Prayer For the Unborn performed by Gary Numan
Saw tubeway army in 1978, last bastion acton, west london. Fan ever since certainly right up to telekon, after that the odd songs still hit home. I heard this track and its remixes whilst travelling on a virgin train from cumbria to reading ( 6 hours ) some years after its release. My dad had terminal cancer and as an ex royal marine was finding it very hard to allow people to care for him in what were his last days, i was summoned down to reading to help - i dont know if i misinterpret the lyrics, misunderstand them or as often happens with numans lyrics replace them with your own similar verse, but i cried and i still do when i hear this massive choon and its mixes. If any one has a list and or copies of all mixes available of this stunning track, i'll get round to writing my review of the last bastion gig - something ive been meaning to do since 1978. Ive also seen a live version on a cd format of hybrid which is just beautiful, love him or loathe him, this choon WILL make you sit up, take notice of your life, and cause you to break down, as i said not neccesarily in tears but certainly in awe. Numanoids keep in touch, chill out lovers and email me with info of alternative mixes thanx for listening
