James Taylor was the pre-eminent singer/songwriter of the
Seventies and has remained a solid musical craftsman and
performer. Born in Boston in 1948, Taylor grew up in the
university town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He summered
with his family on Martha's Vineyard, where he met fellow
guitarist/songwriter Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar and began
performing. Beset by drug problems, he voluntarily
institutionalized himself and began writing songs during
his stay. Moving to New York , Taylor formed the Flying
Machine with Kortchmar in 1966. After their breakup, he
headed to London, where he lived for a year. He cut a demo
tape that got him signed to the Beatles' Apple Records by
A&R man Peter Asher, who became his manager and producer.

Every time I try to sing this song, my throat goes tight, my eyes well up and I can't finish. This song touches me in a way that I still can't understand..... and I'm a 60 year old man. I was a kid when I first heard. Liked it then, still do.

------ About the song Carry Me On My Way performed by James Taylor
A truly great song with a wonderful lyric. The song plays with tempo and turning around the time signature. His reference to Armageddon and Waterloo is, I think, just a reference to the anticipation of disaster - probably more in terms of a personal relationship than in any kind of global or political sense. He is aware of his actions and the damage he does, and he senses the coming disaster as a result of those actions.

Woah, I was just doing a search on my name, and found this page. I had no idea this song exited, but now I definitely have to find it and listen to it! I know I wasn't named after this song, I don't think my parents even know this song exists, but it's amazing how many people were named after it. :D Must be a great song lol. Well, I'm off to go find it on the interweb!
Buddhist influence in James' later music... | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Another Day performed by James Taylor
In the past 10 years or more I've notice a great deal of Buddhist inspiration in his music. "Another Day" to me, as hints of the buddhist idea of living precisely in the moment. Other songs, like "Frozen Man" to me can be interpreted as a metaphore for reincarnation, and the suffering inherent in the "birth and rebirth cycle". Still other songs that explore this theme of life and death and release from the cycle of "wandering" through seemingly endless physical reincarnations ('samsara' is the Sanskrit term for this) listen closely to the lyrics of "Enough to be on your way", and "Carry me on my way".

There aren't too many songs that can help you deal with a funeral. I've always found this one interesting for capturing the contrast between a beautiful day and this terribly sad occasion. The best line may be the last, "I walked out on the Mesa/ And I stumbled on this song" ...going out to reflect on it all.
Like "Fire and Rain," it helps to know the autobiographical details which are there in this, like many JT songs. You can straighten out some of the guesses you've made and fill in the rest of the blanks.

Yes, I did name my daughter after this song. I loved the song and feeling it gave me and always said I would name my daughter after this tune one day. It was after I saw her for the very first time that really clinched it. My wife and I had an opportunity to meet and speak with James Taylor one night at a concert. He told us of his daughter and how she was named for her grand mothers. It was a cool story and yes, he is a real nice guy to. He and the wife talked like it was old home week. Then we went our own ways. Way Cool
i thin this is just a beautiful song! and btw i think it is really really bad to be fascinated with the gringo culture... c'mon.... i love mine, sure i like this song and there are things about that culture i like, but if somebody calls me a yanl i would be really angry, im proud of my roots and im proud of being costa rican, i would not trade that for anything.

Steve...get over yourself man. How is not knowing the writer of a song a copyright violation? I guess you think you're supposed to get paid for people putting-up 40 year old lyrics. Now that's what I call lack of common decency. Like you've nevr been wrong about who actaully wrote a song. Are you getting any?
For decades James Taylor has provided intense magnification and indepth cultural critical thought to his audiences. "Shed A Little Light" reveals the various methods "social light" can be distorted, i.e., through media, internet, politcally correct thought for the present time, or through innate ignorance. However, the lyrics reflect an acurrate depictation of social behavior through the eyes of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Poignant lyrics combined with smooth melodic motifs, topped with the warmth intensity of James' unduplicatable, irreplacable tenor vocal instrument creates a musical presentation that is both on time and timeless. Thank you Mr. Taylor.
Good song, but give the writer credit | Reviewer: Steve Deasy
------ About the song Machine Gun Kelly performed by James Taylor
This song is a good song written by Danny Kortchmar and presented very well by James Taylor on his "Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon" album. I am a songwriter myself, so what pisses me off is that people post stuff like this on the internet without giving proper credit to the songwriter in clear violation of copyright laws and common decency.
Best,
Steve

hola monton de desgraciados (Hi everyone)esta cancion es horrible (this song is really sentimental) no tiene sentido como un hombre pudo sobrevivir en el hielo tanto tiempo (I like it, tge lyrics are to beautifull) me parece totalmente idiota (I even cryed), es perfecta como trabajo para una clase de ingles donde hay canciones aburridas que nadie conose (James taylor is a genius) oh esperen eso fue!! (I love is voice) se merecen el infierno y la indiferencia de los angeles (well thanks for your atention) pudranse (by-bye)
After I heard this song from my choir teacher, I fell in love. I was even more excited when we sang it for graduation. My BOO (boyfriend) was the soloist. Right when the choir finished performing shower the people for graduation, the sun came out. It was a beautiful closing act and a wonderful day!!

------ About the song Fire And Rain performed by James Taylor
although my childhood friend john died in the north tower on 911 7 years ago i just found out about it 2 days ago. i lost touch with him when i joined the navy & he to college after h.s. every so often i search for old friends over the internet. for many years i had been looking for him. i mentioned it to a mutual friend who attended grade school with him & she broke the news to me. driving home from work last night i heard this song & i just cried non stop. i did always thought that I'd see him again.
"sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground." this line just makes me cry even more...thinking of the planes that hit the tower. i have to believe i will still see him again.
This is a beautiful little tune from the One Man Band album that explores the phenomenon of the perennial traveler, who is burdened with such an unquenchable thirst for freedom that he can never remain anchored anywhere particular for very long. Yes it is a burden, as JT tells us “they hunger for home but they cannot stay”: their lives are doomed to oscillate between the security and comfort of a stable home life and the quest for the open road. They begin as young runaways and end up old road dogs, as he calls them, but always blessed by that one lucky travelling star selected from the multitude that lights his way through the darkness.
It is one thing to be blessed with JT’s wonderful vocal tone and expression, it is something else again to be able to find your groove and write such masterful songs. That is why he endures like that travelling star he sings about.
This song is in the movie "American Pie" and that's where I first heard it. I love how they sang it as a choir in the movie. I'm from Australia, but I am fascinated by North America so much! People from the USA and Canada are so cool in my books anyway. My sweet uncle Steve always says to me: "Oh you North American Girl!!" He sometimes calls me a yank for fun.

------ About artist/band James Taylor
Gosh, I listen to James in the car everyday and I just have to say, Steamroller Blues, written by the young folk musician who was not even a blues player, shows how wonderful and talented he is. I LOVE that cut and melt everytime I hear it. It makes me smile and squirm a little bit. I'm 70 and feel young especially when listening to James Taylor.
