Don McLean Lyrics

Don McLean started just as he suggests in American Pie, as
a paperboy. It was in this way that he learned of the death
of the man he calls his first and last idol: Buddy Holly.
Haunted by feelings that everything important had been said
and done by bigger men, Don tried his hand at music. In the
mid to late 1960's, McLean earned regional success in New
York's Hudson Valley. Don was declared Hudson River
Troubadour. He hitchhiked the river performing in the
watertowns. It was during this that he met Pete Seeger and
was drafted into More...

------ About the song Flight of dragons performed by Don McLean

My parents taped this off the TV years ago and it was one of my favorite videos, I loved the song and the film. Years later I caught myself humming the tune (I could never remember the lyrics other than Flight of dragons) so I bought a DVD copy on eBay, it is a copy someone has made off a VHS but as the film company hasn't released it in Europe on DVD it does me and I still watch it. Great Tune and Great Film. Sad so few people remember it.

Viet Nam Era Protest Song | Reviewer: Robyn
------ About the song Everybody Loves Me Baby performed by Don McLean

If I'm not mistaken, and I really could be, this was an anti war protest song from the Viet Nam 'War' era where the 'me' is the USA. Interestingly, it seems just as apporpriate for the Bush/USA/Iraq war period.

------ About the song Vincent performed by Don McLean

This song is where i find my comfort zone..loved the way Don Mc Lean sang this..It often makes me realize how deep humanity is. We may be victims of losing ourselves to worthless things and forgetting what was really important. It makes you visualize clearly what Van Gogh has to say on his painting..

rock is not evil | Reviewer: marty
------ About the song American Pie performed by Don McLean

You make many good points and some make sense. How can you argue the point about "Helter Skelter?" Loss of American taste, could be about rock. But to say rock is evil is ridiculous. Yes, you can dance to many many rock songs, such as "Love Hurt" by Nazareth, and "Every Rose Has its Thorn."

The mojority of rock, even hard rock is not evil. "Living Thing." by ELO is an anti-abortian song. "do you know what you're doin'" by Terry Bush is an anti drug song. And the byrds had a hit song "turn, turn, turn." the lyrics are from the book eccleseastes, from the bible.

There is no reference to fire in the lyrics jumpin jack flash.

Not all dicussion to morality in the 60s was gone. Remember the peace signs?

Religion gone, replaced by rock? There was a very popular rock song "spirit in the sky."

Just because you listen to particular style of music, doesn't mean you live by the lyrics. I love god. I also love the group Black Sabbath. I love the beat, the sound of the music. I just know when I hear a song I either like it or don't.

An excellent musical tribute | Reviewer: AJ Darling
------ About the song Vincent performed by Don McLean

I love this song. With all my heart.

Van Gogh is one of the world's most precious people. He had a sensitive soul that was often misunderstood as madness. He had his own remarkable style, his own compassion for his work, and his love for everything beautiful.

Many people just dubbed his work as worthless, and that was too much for him to bear--after all, what is a painting but a translation of the world through artist's eyes and onto canvas.

Everything Vincent had seen, from the forest-green cypresses against the star-streaked sky to the mound of cartilage and blood that was his left ear, and all else unmentionable, all of that was beautiful.

What? | Reviewer: Don
------ About the song American Pie performed by Don McLean

Come on, some of this is just silly.
Buddy died in 1959, the Korean was was over a few years."Sacred store", a record shop. "Chevy to the levee" from an early R'R song.
"Helter Skelter" Beatles. Jester-Dylan others like the Byrds, Joplin. Drug culture of rock.
It's about Buddy mainly. "That'll be the Day". From John Wayne movie Buddy loved, also 1959- "The Searchers". On and on, you don't know much about early R'R dude.
Whiskey AND Rye.

Rye, NY | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song American Pie performed by Don McLean

The word 'Rye' in the line "And them good old boys were drinking whiskey in Rye," refers to the town Rye in Westchester County, NY. Don McLean is from New Rochelle, NY, which is a less affluent town in Westchester County. Referring to good ol' boys drinking whiskey in Rye would only make sense considering the context of McLean's background.

------ About the song Flight of dragons performed by Don McLean

I, like most, first saw the movie when i was a child. It's music and storyline captured my imagination. It sparked my creative mind and gave me hope in a world without. And to this day i find myself thinking about it when i'm lost. It truly is a work of magic.

Protest songs | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Orphans of wealth performed by Don McLean

Don McLean is an all time favorite singer of mine. I enjoyed singing this song over the years. However, as I think about the words to the lyrics it strikes me that this is in line with so many other protest songs. It is a beautiful sentiment but not necessarily true. While there are hungry people in this country they represent a tiny minority. Further, the idea that it is somehow society's fault is also troubling. This is not to say there is not such a thing as societal guilt. The problem is that if there is blame it should be placed properly on the responsible party. The fact that we have both public programs (food stamps) and private programs (bread lines and soup kitchens) is a sign we corporate responsibility is being addressed. This song primes me to jump on board to protest, and yet after looking hard, it is difficult to find the band wagon.

------ About the song Flight of dragons performed by Don McLean

i want to share a powerful experience with this song. i watched the movie when i was like 1 or 2 years old (29 now), forgotten all about the movie and song all these years, just never remembered it AT ALL, until just 10 minutes ago when i viewed a video of a cover of the song on Youtube, played with a guitar.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFhmWjGlvnw <<this.

apparently it triggered something, because i didn't feel sad or anything but tears came out involuntarily and i realized that I've always remembered this song. it all came back. looks like it was just marked as a 'hidden file' in my brain, so to speak. i got goosebumps. the subconscious is a pretty powerful thing, apparently.
