Pomona, California. He and his two sisters grew up moving

moved to National City. Tom's grandfather was christened

and pencil by his bed so that he could remember the lyrics
that he would think up in the middle of t More...

------ About the song Cold Water performed by Tom Waits
i can honestly say that this is one of my favorite tom waits songs (and there are few) There is no-one else in my humble opinion able to put such images and feelings into their songs as this man.
A bloody hilarious chap too.
Love ya tom

------ About the song New Coat Of Paint performed by Tom Waits
From Heart Attack & Vine (1974) it's a wonderful blusey/jazzy mix with a fantastic piano lead. Love the lyrics of the second verse.
All your scribbled lovedreams, are lost or thrown away
Here amidst the shuffle of an overflowing day
Our love needs a transfusion so let's shoot it full of wine
Fishin' for a good time starts with throwin'in your line.

Shiver me? | Reviewer: mac.hawk
------ About the song Shiver Me Timbers performed by Tom Waits
Whilst I do really like this song, it's a good example of the period of transition from the early simplistic songs to the more narrative/story material that was to come later, it just doesn't quite make into his 'absolutely gotta have, wouldn't be without, must have' list - but it's on my substitutes bench.

------ About the song Tom Traubert's Blues performed by Tom Waits
Startlingly brilliant. Reached the masses via Rod Stewart's version (and to think people thought HE had a rough voice!). Stewart brought out the melody, similarly on Downtown Train, but the minimalism of the original and Tom's voice make this a classic track. There are a few theories to the subject matter: it's about an alcoholic: a drug taker: a Vietnam veteran (drug taking) or, as Tom has been quoted as saying, 'it's about throwing up in a foreign country'. Whichever one you choose, it matters not, it's just a brilliant piece of work!
The star turn from Tom Wait's 1973 album, Closing Time. I first heard it in about 1980 when a friend of a friend lent me Tom's entire back catalogue on vynil. Fantastically melodic, with wonderful, lonely lyrics which Tom sings to perfection. Anyone who lke a melodic lullaby\love song should Hope That They Fall In Love With This

------ About the song Kentucky Avenue performed by Tom Waits
Everybody in my mum + dad's house (in 1980 there were 8 of us) and in my own house (2009 - 4 of us) except me think this is just pap/weird and don't really 'get it'. If I'm in a morose mood this can almost bring me to tears - as vog says it's the best song about (male) childhood EVER. Most of us have been there, with all the exaggerations and wild expectations. Like 'vog' I'm British but that's irrelevant, this is simply one absolutely fantastic song.
Way Down in the Hole | Reviewer: poet13c
------ About the song Way Down in the Hole performed by Tom Waits
Very loose, sort of, off-the-cuff style, like you'd just made it up and didn't want to tinker with it anymore as that would kill it. It's the phrasing over the beat that makes it so accessible. You feel like you want to do it yourself - and that's the highest possible recommendation for any song.

This song nearly had me weeping the first time i heard it. The line 'and i begged you to stab me' does it...
First time i heard Tom's voice i was shocked, i wasn't really sure if it was good or bad, but i've gotten used to his gravelly tones and can always hear the pain in his voice seeping through, brilliant song writer.

------ About the song Kentucky Avenue performed by Tom Waits
I have never heard this song. But I know it's probably good. Probably not as good as "Searching For The Heart of Saturday Night", but Tom is a poet! I will get back to you someday after I hear the song on the 8-track in my rusted out classic Imperial in Portland. Tiny Kongslie Portland, Oregon
One of the most emotional | Reviewer: HD
------ About the album Closing Time performed by Tom Waits
there is nothing left to talk about this. It seems to be one of the most emotional and I think this is the best gift that he gave to everyone over the world! Let's begin with 'Ol 55! and close the booklet with Closin' time! this is for ya!
Most beautiful song ever.. | Reviewer: Lene
------ About the song Martha performed by Tom Waits
Hearing that song for the first time I was a tad surprised that it came from a young Tom Waits in his early 20's. He's singing this tearjerker song of an older man reminiscing his long lost love and no wonder his career kickstarted with that gem of a debut album. When the choir kicks in at last it's difficult holding back the tears.. what an amazing song, one of his very best!
This song goes about, using drugs. It somting the american soldiers did in Vietnam.
They felt lonly and needed money to go waltzing mathilda/use drugs, it slowly killed the soldiers you could she it on the end of the number.
The Ramones Wish They Were This Cool | Reviewer: Marty, Dallas TX
------ About the song I Don't Wanna Grow Up performed by Tom Waits
Most people know this song from the Ramones cover or more recently from Scarlett Johanssen's cover - but neithe rof those captures the true essence of the song - Waits' raspy delivery is such a wonderful contrast to the childish tenor of the writing - a grown man with a whiskey/cigarette voice singing about wanting to avoid the perils of the adult world is delicious irony.
I have played piano since I was 5 and I am now 46. One evening I was watching the David Letterman show and he introduced Tom Waits. I had never heard of Tom. He came out looking like a hobo and I was not impressed. He talked to Dave a few minutes and then went to the piano and played "On The Nickel". I was completely amazed. I quickly learned that song and many others from all the Tom Waits albums I immediately purchased. When I would do a Tom Waits number I would always sing it in the Tom Waits voice because nothing else would do it justice. My mother, who had heard me play piano for years, heard me doing Ruby's Arms one day and couldn't figure out why I was singing with a scratchy voice. I said Mom, thats the way Tom does it. I asked her what she thought of the songs and she said they were beautiful. Now almost 30 years later, I still do the Tom Waits songs and anytime my mother hears one on TV she says...."hey theres that guy you do". This song has a sad sort of feel to it, as does many of Toms wok, but when it is being performed correctly, you will have everyones attention.

------ About the song Tom Traubert's Blues performed by Tom Waits
I like reading about what musicians have to say about other music and their feelings about it. So, yesterday, I went to Patrick Stump's website and he had one a cover of this song. (you HAVE to go check it out) The way he sings it is just beautiful. He just has this way of really connecting with a song and that's something I admire greatly. He's [Patrick] a wonderful musician and one that I look up to when it comes to music. The lyrics are just mesmerizing and have such power and meaning that i can't help but be drawn to it. I looked up the original song on youtube and I was just in awe by Tom Waits' voice. I've never heard anything like it. This song is the type of song I always look to when I want inspiration. The way a song sounds (i.e. chords, vocals, dynamics, emotion) is what really gives me my inspiration. I've rambled on long enough I believe. What can I say? I'm a music nerd. :)

------ About the song Trouble's Braids performed by Tom Waits
Tom Waits,
Has to be the most colourful and discriptive story teller i've ever come across when it comes to writing lyrics and songs. Bob Dylan said,"Tom Waits is one of his secret heroes". I can certainly understand why.
one of the best songs I ever heard of a sad lonely heart..god bless tom for the way he can tell it from the heart..no falsehoods here..it touched my soul..i was in love once in my life..and this brings the warth back on the lonely nights..

The horns, the haunting lyrics, Tom Waits is a true master of mood. This is an amazingly dark and lovely song...only Waits could do it so well. Listen with head phones. Those horns will touch your soul.
