Semi-Charmed Life Lyrics - Third Eye Blind

Review The Song (22)

I'm packed and I'm holding
I'm smiling, she's living, she's golden
She lives for me, says she lives for me
Ovation, her own motivation
She comes round and she goes down on me
And I make her smile, like a drug for you
Do ever what you wanna do, coming over you
Keep on smiling, what we go through
One stop to the rhythm that divides you

And I speak to you like the chorus to the verse
Drop another line like a coda with a curse
Come on like a freak show takes the stage
We give them the games we play, she said...

I want something else, to get me through this
Semi-charmed kinda life, baby, baby
I want something else, I'm not listening when you say good-bye
sponsored links
The sky was gold, it was rose
I was taking sips of it through my nose
And I wish I could get back there, someplace back there
Smiling in the pictures you would take
Doing crystal meth, will lift you up until you break
It won't stop, I won't come down
I keep stock with the tick-tock rhythm, I bump for the drop
And then I bumped up, I took the hit that I was given
Then I bumped again, then I bumped again
She said...

How do I get back there, to the place where I fell asleep inside you
How do I get myself back to the place where you said...
I want something else, to get me through this
Semi-charmed kinda life, baby, baby
I want something else, I'm not listening when you say good-bye

I believe in the sand beneath my toes
The beach gives a feeling, an earthy feeling
I believe in the faith that grows
And the four right chords can make me cry
When I'm with you I feel like I could die
And that would be all right, all right

And when the plane came in, she said she was crashing
The velvet it rips in the city, we tripped on the urge to feel alive
Now I'm struggling to survive,
those days you were wearing that velvet dress
You're the priestess, I must confess
Those little red panties they pass the test
Slide up around the belly, face down on the mattress

And you hold me, and we're broken
Still it's all that I wanna do, just a little now
Feel myself, heavy on the ground
I'm scared, I'm not coming down
No, no
And I won't run for my life
She's got her jaws now, locked down in a smile
But nothing is all right, all right

And I want something else, to get me through this life
Baby, I want something else
Not listening when you say...
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye

The sky was gold, it was rose
I was taking sips of it through my nose
And I wish I could get back there
Someplace back there, in the place we used to start
I want something else

Just because you don't experience addiction doesn't mean other people don't. It's way more than just psychological. Take some med school classes and you'll understand. It laymen's terms, everyone's bodies and minds are physically and mentally different. Drugs alter the bodies chemistry and the body's response will vary. A craving for Meth isn't just psychological, the body undergoes physiological changes as well.

A person's mind is very powerful, and they can overcome addictions, but you obviously have no clue what a truly addictive personality is (and how it exists beyond just a mental capacity). Someone who experiences severe addictions will literally, both mentally and physically, feel like they will die without it.

You wouldn't know this because you don't suffer from it which is fine, do with your life what you like. But to suggest that someone is "weak" for having this involuntary and unavoidable condition is just immature and ignorant. But for you, ignorance seems to be bliss so keep "enjoying" your life.

I believe that he is using crystal as a metaphor for his relationship with a girl. The relationship like meth in the beginning was the best feeling, but as time went on no matter how much they tried, they could not reproduce the same "high" as they felt in the start of their relationship.

truth | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/25/11

With personal, educational, and work experience, I can say, some of the reviews are accurate, and some are not so my opinion.
If someone would know meth use as I do, in the multiples ways that I know it, it is important to know: psychologically the first time a person uses meth, it is the best thing in the world. Nothing can compare and nothing ever will. The second time, third, fourth, and so on will never ever compare to the very first high. People will always attempt to get that first high back, continuing to use more and more (as well as toleration builds and withdrawal grows more intense), so people use more often and more quantity.
The song, in my opinion, is stating they are looking to get back to that place (the first high), but cant.
The beginning is all peachy and fun-like. Everything is cool, having fun, no problems. Then they start using again and again and again. Issues start coming up.
In the second verse he's still having a good time, all is still great, but then he uses and uses and uses. (bump is the slang word for what is said when you snort meth-"give me a bump" - and hit is used when you smoke it "take a hit"). So he bumps, then hits, then bumps, then bumps again. But, as said before, you can never get back to the first high, so it is never as good as that first time, which is what your body/head wants. Then things start getting bad.
The next couple versus are when the person starts etting too high. Physically, A person can actually die from not sleeping faster than a person will die without water. When you are up for a couple days you start hallucinating. I have known people to see giant spiders coming out of the floor, blood dripping down the wall and so forth. So, with the hallucination from lack of sleep, people start getting even more paranoid than when they first started the binge (the initial start of the this active high - people are paranoid due to rapid heart beat, more persperation, racing thoughts, ect...). With the more paranoia and need for sleep, people decide to discontinue the high, stop using, and 'crash'. People call it crashing because it makes you feel so physically and psychologically awful!!! a lot of people will actually take really strong downer pills (some use medication like seroquil - strong anti-psychotic medication which will make you pass out) just to come down. So they start talking about crashing. At this time, your head is so messed up from lack of food and sleep, things are all over the place (probably why the music gets pretty intense/loud here).
And then you crash, sleep for a couple of days, wake up, and start all over...

And for those who say meth is no big deal, and the media and "war on drugs" is nothing...that is completly incorrect. People die every day from meth as well as many other drugs. And these people are not just the users, but completely innocent people - such as babies and children. Wait one day until someone you know dies from the use, or worse, someone you know abuses their child so severely they are in the hospital or dead. These things happen, and more often than what the general public thinks. Also, people manufacturing meth around children also put children at extremely high risk of fires, poisoning, and burns. It happens a young user (which from the sounds of it, most of he writers here are - or have not used at all), you might not think of it like that, but that is the truth....

Your a fag, only weak people get addicted to anything. Do MDMA if you get an urge to do meth and when you come down smoke some weed. Your a pussy you do one drug and get out of control and think it's the end of the world. "Oh hold my hand jesus help me!" Suck it up, take a shot of patron and go to work. Life is simple people over complicate it with their own self-expectations. If you don't see yourself as someone that can handle their drugs and you do them every once and a while becuase you are scared of them then you are going to be fucked by them in the end. Your fear is what controls you. Trust me other people have done far more drugs then you can ever imagine and made more money and success then you ever will. Drugs don't kill people, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE!

6th grade science | Reviewer: archersofloaf | 8/22/10

When I was in junior high sixth grade in my science class they made us watch an anti drug video with special appearance 3rd eye blind an well the band was like drugs are bad kids an all that but the whole film this song was playing in my head an I was wondering wtf do you mean drugs are bad!? Your singing a great song abt them......

To Chris(tian)B.Peper | Reviewer: JonC | 8/1/10

On the contrary, you must have not seen nor suffered the long-term effects of Crystal Methamphetamine. It starts out seemingly harmless and fun until you use again and again and again. It's Science, your neurotransmitters are being destroyed and rebuilt to resolve with each use of the drug meaning your dopamine(pleasure chemical that produces feel-good sensations with everyday activity, eating, sleeping, roller coasters, sex etc.) and serotonin(mood-stabilizer chemical that keeps your mood balanced. When unstable produces rage-filled anger/outbursts, deep painful depression, a sense of having no purpose and not caring about anything) levels are only surging/working when you smoke, snort, eat, shoot Ice. Personally for me it started out as every few months, then every few weeks, then every weekend until finally after only one year of use I was smoking/shooting eight balls in a single day. It rewires your entire brain chemistry until all you talk about, think about, dream about or want to do is Meth. Don't be in denial and don't be for recreational drug use, obviously you haven't experienced the dark side of addiction but keep doing dope and you will, eventually. It's not a matter of Will it Destroy your life or won't it? It's only a matter of how long it will take before it does. Now I am Clean, Thanks to Jesus Christ.

Drug war hysteria. | Reviewer: Chris(tian)B.Peper | 7/24/10

Like the fraudulent war on terror, the war on drugs takes the danger of drugs and exaggerates them until the very notion of enjoying drugs is seen as an almost revolutionary act. Meth is far less dangerous than the mainstream media says. The song is about meth and sex. Neither meth nor sex is dangerous if done correctly and in the right environment. There are thousands of Americans that have safely done meth and had premarital sex with no adverse consequences. Both the drug war and the sex crimes witch-hunt must end. Good song though! -C.B.P.

Art should always be open to interpretation | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/20/10

i think the cool thing abt this song is that even though the meaning meant by the artiste is there, it was so well written that you couldn't guess that on the first try. yea a lot of people are saying "oh any monkey couldve gotten that" but come on. it's not obvious-and it's not supposed to be i think. the whole point of any form of art is interpretation. that's what makes it interesting. the composition of this song was just dying to make the song interpreted in different ways. so i say, let people make it what they want. you should never tell a person that 'this is the way you should interpret this'. that defeats the purpose of-art.

It's pretty open to opinion. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/17/10

You can't really tell everyone what the song, it's your opinion more than anything. They're a good band because you can take anything from their songs.

And for gods sake, its RAUNCHY sex. Not ronchy.

doooooood<3 | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/19/10

okay so i love this song and im not a die hard fan and i aready knew it was about doin some crystal and then gettin blown...i mean if it already feels good when ur sober wat do u think the guy felt when he was all methed up? duhh it was evident that he had to make a song about this wonderful expierence (:

Think Again. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/12/10

Johnny K is definately right. Any interview you see of this band will tell you this song is about rounchy sex and hardcore drugs. There is no deep meaning about it. No "don't do drugs," or "My girlfriend left me *sniff's coke*" or vise versa. It was never meant to be misleading about it's topics, it is as obvious as it can get. Theme- RONCHY SEX & HARDCORE DRUGS.

Great Song (hard to remember the lyrics!!!!!) | Reviewer: Aaron | 6/17/09

The song's great popularity and the frequency of which it was played on the radio proves how little people actually listen to the song... But, even though it was about a man losing his girl to meth/cocaine, it was beautifully written and 3eb did a very nice job of incorporating a misleading, catchy, positive tune into it (lol?). I can play and sing this song, but it's hard to remember the lyrics! i really like this song and once i'm able to remember the lyrics, you can count on me covering it in my next gig at the Red Frog!!!

wow | Reviewer: johnny k | 6/12/09

people really over analyze songs. The song is about oral sex while high on meth...seriously, nothing more than that. This is from an interview with there guitarist..

"It was about a band member’s experience during Lollapalooza. The idea is that a guy goes to Lollapalooza, the one where Dinosaur Jr. played, and he took some crystal meth and had an amazing time, and it led to an oral sex situation with his girlfriend. The song speaks for itself. It’s definitely a true experience."

not what you might think | Reviewer: semi-charmed? | 12/23/08

This song reminds me of my first love dying. That's when it was popular on the radio. The meth references are interesting, and potentially relevant, but not necessary. Who does *not* feel that they live a 'semi charmed' life? Who is not broken, by one thing or another (one person or another)? I find the song poignant, a reach out beyond the quotidian existence of everyday life, a yearning to eclipse the 'semi-charmed' post-modern lives that we lead. A challenge. What is that something else? Drug addict, lost soul, mourner and sage, do we not ask ourselves this question every day? If we don't, shouldn't we?

It's sort of like modern art: capturing a feeling in a song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/21/08

It's about that feeling/emotion/mental state that everyone wants to have and nobody wants to ruin and everybody seems to be striving for as best as they possibly can. When you have it, all is right and you just want more. When you don't have it, nothing is alright, and you just want to get back to how you used to be. This is the foundation of human sexual love and accomplishment and it feels like you can almost transcend your mundane humanness, which you're grateful for in the first place, but still you are only semi-charmed to be this lucky. And you just want more. It all comes down to an addiction to feelings.
