Poetic Tragedy Lyrics - The Used

Review The Song (35)

The cup is not half empty as pessimists say
as far as he sees nothing's left in the cup
A whole cup full of nothing for him to indulge
since the voice of ambition has long since been shut up

A singer, a writer,
he's not dreaming now of going nowhere
he gave heed to nothing
and all that he was is just a tragedy

So he voyages in circles succeeds getting nowhere
and submits to the substance that first got him there, there, there, there

then in violent, frustration
he cries out to God or just no one
is there a point to this madness
and all that he was is just a tragedy

He feels alone
His heart in his hands, he's alone
He feels alone
I feel

Then on that last day he breaks
and he stood tall
then he yelled, and he yelled
{why world, why world, hate you, hate you, bye world}

violent frustration
he cries out to God or just no one
is there a point to this madness
and all that he was is just a tragedy

Actually, | Reviewer: anonymous. | 11/4/11

This song is about Bert himself. It's about his struggles. Bert was heavily addicted to meth, hence "then submits to the substance that first got him there". While abusing meth, Bert was depressed, hence the chorus of him screaming out to God, or someone, or no one.

Still Going Strong in 2011 | Reviewer: Tauh*d | 7/22/11

Back in 2004, I had an internet friend that introduced me to rock music. I used to be a pure rap fan.

Taste of Ink was one of the songs she sent me, and it blew my mind, for a rock song. Since then i've been listening to all kinds of music, mostly rap and alternative rock. The other day, I downloaded taste of ink for nostalgic playlist. It hit me just as hard as it did almost nine years ago, when I was eleven years old. I decided to just buy the whole album.

This song... Has been on repeat for half an hour, I had to check the lyrics and when I did I almost cried in a happy way. I think all "emo" bands should be more like this, where it's not necessarily depressing but more a positive outlook on difficult phases of your life. I'm a songwriter myself, and it's so relatable, you can tell Burt wrote this for everyone that's ever felt hopeless. I love this song.

And yes the last bit is in the album booklet.

transformation | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/21/11

The song is about Bert's transformation from the person he was to the person that he is.
His cup had nothing in it, so he couldn't say it was half-empty as a pessimist would or even half-full as an optimist would. So he calls it "a whole cup full of nothing" of which he can indulge, his way of seeing an empty cup in an optimistic light.

He explains how and why he once "felt alone" and how painful it was. But the realization that he has is that he doesn't feel alone or feel happy or anything... simply that he feels at all is a blessing. That's why he changes it from "He feels alone." to "I feel." That is the moment of transformation.

Then, he gets up on the stage, in front of the world, and lets out all of his past frustration. He screams it out of himself. And afterwards, is at peace.

my take on the song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/4/10

this song is about a friend of his who was a musician and was trying to make in the industry and that had commited suicide because he couldnt make it bert is singing about the few days or hours before it had happened and what his friend had told him he felt like being in his darkest hour and how he felt guilty for not being able to talk him out of suicide and now he is alone with out a friend

What's it about | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/7/10

The song is about his pregnant wife who passed away, and how he wants to give up on everything his music and writing he feels useless and hates the world. Makes perfect sense to me and I love Bert every word he sings is real and means something to him and I love Kurt cobain two amazing artist

Amazing song | Reviewer: Jordan | 5/28/10

The song is obviously about himself. Talking in third person saying "he feels alone" and then it's almost like he let's it slip that it's him by saying "I feel..." but he catches it and stops there.
His writing in this song is just incredible. Expressing how far his struggle is through perfect words describing his emotions. Violent and frustrated screaming out to go or just no one... But in the end he's just a tragidy.
The cup was never half full cause there was nothing in there for him. How can one induldge in nothing. It's just genius.

Do you feel something wrong? | Reviewer: Ann Cathryn | 4/22/10

..even though song is not clear to be said, but, if u try to concentrate and feel the moral what the said song wants to deliver, u must appreciate the fact that they are really having different vocations and dignity in life.

Really love ..(+)THE USED(+)

lyrics | Reviewer: charles | 1/12/10

to me it what it sounds like at the end when hes screaming, it says..
"why, world.why world..grrr.God, let him/me change, for the world"and all that he was, just a tradgedy."
since he is talking in the third person through out most of the song, i think it says "let him change, for the world"

music therapy | Reviewer: charlie | 12/4/09

i played this song in music therapy. it means so much to me, tried to kill myself a few times. i like doing vocals ( i like screaming and grunting too, altough i'm a girl many people say i'm pretty good at it XD(frustration and anger can be good for something)) and i think i've wrote over 100 lyrics and poems last 3 years. they all suck but whatever, this song is AMAZING.

The Used just by their self means so much to me. But this one specific song is so improtant to my life. My sister age of 17 who passed away last February and, she was a huge fan of The Used. And this song was played at her funeral...
