Our Solemn Hour Lyrics - Within Temptation

Review The Song (31)

Sanctus Espiritus redeem us from our solemn hour
Sanctus Espiritus insanity is all around us
Sanctus Espiritus! Sanctus Espiritus! Sanctus Espiritus!

In my darkest hours I could not foresee
That the tide could turn so fast to this degree
Can't believe my eyes
How can you be so blind?
Is the heart of stone, no empathy inside?
Time keeps on slipping away and we haven't learned
So in the end now what have we gained?

Sanctus Espiritus, redeem us from our solemn hour
Sanctus Espiritus, insanity is all around us
Sanctus Espiritus, is this what we deserve,
can we break free from chains of never-ending agony?

Are they themselves to blame, the misery, the pain?
Didn't we let go, allowed it, let it grow?
If we can't restrain the beast which dwells inside
it will find its way somehow, somewhere in time
Will we remember all of the suffering
Cause if we fail it will be in vain

Sanctus Espiritus, redeem us from our solemn hour
Sanctus Espiritus, insanity is all around us
Sanctus Espiritus, is this what we deserve,
can we break free from chains of never-ending agony?

Amazing song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/24/11

I sooooo love this song, espacially live. Sharon's voice is incredible.
Sharon said that song was about war, not only World War II, but also the fact that we don't learn from war and the death that we cause by doing that.

There is what she said about this song :
« When you look back on history a lot of times it was propaganda, but you often see it as truth because it's somebody policing—sort of powers and stuff. But we haven't learned from that. We haven't learned from following people's lives. So people get sacrificed also for war and we don't learn from that. Here we are again in Iraq. A lot of things happen and again still a lot of stories are told that were not totally true and it's terrible. I think that's the feeling of a lot of people, so we just wrote a song about it. »

response to the Anonymous Dummy | Reviewer: Plaidhands1 | 2/28/11

I guess there are so many opinions on this song that I dont know who is right.. but I did read about it having to deal with the battles out there.. either way.. whatever the song is about the musical arrangement is great and very unique.. However I am open to your opinion and if you would like to give me the 411 on this song.. it will be great.. seeing that everyone can interpret the song to what they think its about..

Hey Dummies | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/23/11

Those lines are from the same speech (Be Ye Men of Valor), delivered by Sir Winston Churchill, at the outbreak of the blitzkrieg into France, North of the Maginot Line. This is not referencing the battle of Flanders Field. And by the way, the Maginot Line was constructed in response to WWI and was a massive failure.

Who gives a flying care anyway? It is a great sounding song. Lyric is actually Sanctus Spiritus (not with an E).

Show choir | Reviewer: Ismael | 2/15/11

Well I decided to look up the lyrics for this song because I want to know them. The show choir that I am in is singing this song for our main one. I love it because of how it goes. So much suspense in it!!! Come watch us this year!!

Im not sure how old this song is. I just heard it last week but its a great song the choir the orchestra is just amazing. I heard this song live and its just beautiful as her voice is on the album. I was actually brainstorming and reading the meaning of this song.. at first I had no idea it had to do with the war between Flanders and France.. until I started to read the lyrics and did more research on it.. History classes should have songs like these to make the class more interesting.. dont u think??

what means "Sanctus Espiritus" | Reviewer: Virusel | 1/23/11

in fact, "Sanctus Espiritus" is not spelt wrong, it is just wrote wrong. This phrase comes from latin's prayers, that all are ending with "In nominem Domini, et Fili et Spiritus Sancti, Amin", and means "In the name of Father, of Son, and of Holy Spirit, amen!"
And this "Sanctus Espiritus" coming from "Sanctus est Spiritus", wich means "Holy is the Spirit".

If I go further and analize this "Sanctus Espiritus" for you, I can tell you that is not a religious phrase, is just like you would say "oh, my God", or "holy shit" or whatelse you say when you see something that realy intrigue you.

I know all these because I'm romanian, and Romanian is a latin language, and i do latin at school.

the meaning of it | Reviewer: Mer | 12/7/10

Sanctus Espiritus is actually spelt wrong although it does sound that way, its actually spelt Sanctus Spiritus. this latin phrase means "Holy spirit" so in a sense its a spiritual song describing the effects of war.

I think... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/8/10

The first time I heard the song, it was without worry about what was said in the background. I listened to the song during the Israels invasion of Gaza and thought it described the Jews animal behavior quite well. They seems to forget what happend with them self in WII.

But, after seeing what was said in the background, then it seems to be a song based on WI and WII.. Good song WT:D

Amazing song! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/3/10

This song totally rocks! The lyrics have deep meaning, and the music is great. The choir chanting "Sanctus Espiritus" is so haunting and beautiful...one of the best parts of the song is the opera vocals.
