They love me like I was their brother
They protect me, listen to me.
They dug me my very own garden
Gave me sunshine, made me happy
nice dream, nice dream
Nice Dream
I call up my friend the good angel
But she's out with, her answer-phone.
She says that she'd love to come help but
The sea would electrocute us all
nice dream, nice dream
nice dream, nice dream
Nice dream, if you think that you're strong enough
Nice dream, if you think you belong enough
Nice dream, if you think that you're strong enough
Nice dream, if you think you belong enough
(Now come home, now come home)
(Now come home, now come home)
This song is a cry from someone who misses the love and warmth and security and happiness he once found briefly at his mother's breast. He perceives that the world around him is cold, unloving, frightening and uncaring, and that the hope of finding the things he needs most is no more than a dream. I see him as a small boy in a young man's body, who thinks that everything should be given to him, and not having a clue how to find it for himself. That's all.
next to 'Motion picture soundtrack' - which is my favorite song, probably of all time - this is the most beautiful and meaningful song made by this amazing band. Express exactly the awfull reality of the world that we live in without mirrors or false shields and how it's so difficult to survive in this world full of nothing, where, almost all the time, indeed we have this terrible feeling that we belong to nowhere.
To me this song is about a guy who hates this world so much, but inside his mind he's trying to create a new world, innocent, pure, full of light, idealized, but immediatly after, facing again and again the misery of this society he realized that is nothing else than a nice dream. In reality is just a miserable lie for him.
He doesn't have real friends.
The good angel is also a nice dream. Experiencing all her life all kinds of answerphones, all the time fall in the arms of all kinds of guys, she can't be an angel. Her innocence, her purity, her heavenly light is just another nice dream for him, it kills him inside, and for this reason he believes that she would never be able to help or save him. In reality he thinks that she's just a simple woman always looking for stupid adventures and not a real love. The lyrics "she says that she'd love to come help but the sea would electrocute us all" says everything about her friendship for him. Her behavior with her answerphones, replacing them like some dresses all the time, the way that she understands the meaning of love makes him to be very disapointed, hurts him deep inside.
He could never find himself in this kind of society.. he's heart is full of blisters, crushed like a bug in the ground because of her.. he don't belong here, he feels that he belongs to nowhere... he is not strong enough at all.. he dreams at another world.. a better world with a true home for his wandering soul. In this world he feels that it's impossible for him to find a real home and it distroys his inside incresingly more.
This is one of the songs that I can relate with so much, that makes me feel so horribly lonely, makes me feel so horribly empty because of the emptiness of this world, in a sistem where I could never find myself.. a unidimensional society with unidimensional feelings, that above everything else has no ideea what real love means.
Sadly about this real love with a true home I became increasingly aware that it's just an eternal nice dream for myself.
As all the songs of radiohead it have a significant that you can understand like a sarcastic or ironic, but the real its that your mind keeps it lineal, your body, your inconcient wont feel the ironisism. Inside your mind keeps rolling the most repetitive phrases or the lines that are made "specials", "if you think you are strong enough (nice dream)" Its hard to recognize, I was a fan of Radiohead and I love them very much, analize every part of them, and I realize that the band was making something bad inside of me. Since I left to hear them, my life changed for good. Anyway I gave thanks to Radiohead to help me in a inside journey, I think they really help me, but in a time you will have to release them.
"Release me, light another candle" (His advertice)
Good luck in this journey to everyone! :)

For me, this song is kind of a sequel to Creep. It's about the same thing... It's about someone feeling very inadequate, very weak, insignificant. He wants to be normal, to 'belong', to stop being a 'creep', a 'weirdo', but he can't. So he just dreams... watches his dream girl... watches everyone as they interact, as their life plays out... and he feels he won't ever be able to come out of his shell and join them.
(sorry for my crappy English, it's my second language ^^' )
Personally i think this song highlights the fact on how depressing and evil the world is. this song is like the greatest example of a nihilistic person. he's basically being sarcastic in the whole song, and by being sarcastic in a way he is trying to shake idealistic and naive individuals from the stupors of perceiving the world as a dream or "an ideal place".

i think that this is about life going really well, like a nice dream, but then, when things go down hill, when you ask for that lifeline, its not there, the hills and valleys of life, just a thought tho... and i agree with paranoid android, i wish that people wuld begin ignoring britney spears and those [pathetic jonas brothers, and begin to actually look at songs with a true theme, that can actually be interpreted... just my opinion...
I'm sure this song has something to do with death. What I get out of it is both depressing, and warming. The Verse "They love me like I was their brother
They protect me, listen to me.
They dug me my very own garden
Gave me sunshine, made me happy...etc."
feels like a dead man in a cemetery and finding company out of the other people lying around him.

90% of radiohead songs are to be interpreted but are often looked into too deeply into the words and people dont realize sometimes they are literal. The other 10%, to be honest, is usually just lyrics thrown together to create an atmosphere, an emotion or landscape. Some songs just dont have as much meaning as people would like, it just sounds good and goes with the flow.
