I lost my daughter Laurie at age 33 during the birth of her daughter. While I will never recover from the pain I feel at her loss, this song sweetly puts into words for me the many feelings that I have no ability to express on my own. I cannot listen to it too often because of the emotional toll it takes on me, but at those moments of darkest despair I listen to it.
I also take comfort that these words also apply to my granddaughter Ella in whom I see the memory of her beautiful mother.

I love this song. Iʻm only 12 but my dad used to sing this to me when I was little. After my mom and dad got a divorce my dad moved to a different state and I got mad at him for leaving and I am not a big fan of him any more. When I found my cd with this song on it I put it on my ipad and now I listen to it every night. Billy Joel is a genis…this song brought me and my dad closer together.

I heard this song for the first time tonight. I listened to it once, not really paying attention to the lyrics at first because I was doing homework. Part of it caught my attention and I stopped everything to pay complete attention. I am not a parent but this song hits deep inside my soul in a way that cannot quite be put to words. My friend, Joey, was killed in a tragic automobile-bus crash a year and four days ago...My school nurse, whom I loved and adored with my entire heart as a true friend, was killed just a week and two days later. This song says things that I never can speak to them without crying over my words. It's perfect: heartbreaking yet healing. I can't get over the wonder of finding this song at such a painful time.

I sang this song to every baby I have ever carried. This was my way to lull myself to sleep at night when I was nervous of losing one.

My brother is getting married in May and I suggested this song to my Mother to dance to with him. This is my present to him. This song reminds me of every baby I have carried and love but never was able to hold. My Mother will be able to hold her little boy one last time and remember all of the wonderful memories from his childhood.

I sing this song to my girlfriend almost every night on the phone before we go to sleep. The first time I sang it to her she had txt'd me that she was tired but couldn't fall asleep. And I offered to sing her a lullabye hoping that she wouldn't accept and that I wouldnt have to sing. But I love her and I would do anything for her and I've known it for as long as I could remember. So I looked up lullabye's and this was the first one that I saw that looked good. So I sang it to her. Now 2 years later, I have an amazing and beautiful girlfriend that I hope to keep forever.

My husband sang this to our daughter while he danced with her at her wedding in 1997. He made a copy of it for her and us. He passed away in 2009. I just found it and at the end of the song he said " I Love You Katrina" Cried then and now, to hear his voice to Billy Joels song is a killer. Beautiful wedding song.

For my granddaughter's fairy tale wedding last night, this was the choice of her Dad for their dance. It was an emotional highlight of the evening as our heartstrings tuned into the melody and love between a devoted father
and his 'baby girl' all grown up and stepping from beneath his umbrella of protection into the arms of her prince charming. What a poignant message that both parent and child can relate to....and sob over! Thank you, Billy Joel,for sharing with us.

Billy Joel is a genius story teller. His lyrics combined with his musical abilities illustrate (for me) imagery of a father who is about to leave his child...maybe through divorce or death. He's tried to explain the circumstances of his departure but it's painful...maybe due to the age of the child. In the song he is a loving dad and reinforces his love through this lullaby.

I was fostering a batch of sick puppies and I got overly attached to one of the last two survivors. I named him Rusty and he'd always perk up when I sang or hummed this song. I sang it to him when he died just a few days after he seemed to get better. I was holding him in my arms when he died..I cried so much and I cry every time I hear this song. :(
