Like Light To The Flies Lyrics - Trivium

Review The Song (89)

Behold our beloved rebels in tragedy (in tragedy)
Self-denying avarice for bloodshed
Behold hypocrite

Those who run will be burned X4

Devoutly wished for blinded eyes
This tragedy's like light to flies
This seems to suit you better bleeding out the eyes (bleeding out the eyes)
hope's left in chain suspension,
Holding onto lies to make the truth

Behold our beloved rebels in tragedy (in tragedy)
Self-denying avarice for bloodshed
Behold hypocrite

Those who run will be burned X4
Devoutly wished for blinded eyes
This tragedy's like light to flies
This seems to suit you better bleeding out the eyes (bleeding out the eyes)

check out the Discipline and Punish by social philosophger Michel Foucault and you will find that these exact lyrics encapsulate the period of the 18th century where Judiciary tortured the accused to say the truth, where the accused often relied on lies to make the truth, thus either be let free or to prove that the justice was right; often infront of the public.

Matt Heafy (Trivium's singer)'s review | Reviewer: Fly attracted to light | 4/18/12

"This song is about people's attraction to all forms of tragedy. It seems like everywhere you turn to today (e.g., television, newspaper, magazine, movies, etc.) it's all about murder, violence, war, cruelty- and it's because this is what sells; people are totally captivated by subjects in this vein. We are the flies." - Matt Heafy

Interpetation | Reviewer: Anthony | 10/11/11

If anything he is singing about the way, Violence, chaos and destruction is caused by the Lies and mistrust people are given Nowadays. To simply put it he is pointing out that believing lies is like wanting to be blinded, and that the tragedy that is believing Lies is of course Like light to flies, it doesn't make sense. Of course he mentions "devoutly" which leads to believe that religion is a lie and has no true proof, and that people hold on to lies such as these in the end turning them into the "truth".

the real review | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/14/11

You couldn't be more wrong, it's simply about humankind, how we love violence and disaster, looking on at a car crash rather than helping the people involved, reading in a newspaper about death because we as people are drawn to it, observing the suffering of others, "like light to the flies".

True Metal | Reviewer: matt pike | 2/24/11

man, i read every single one of these comments, and not a single goddamn one is about the lyrics. do i have to write an actual review of the song??? really??? stop whinging all you posers cause it's not about whether a band is prog/thrash/grind/screamo/core/metal or whatever the fuck they are calling all the different "genres" nowadays. i remember when it was all rock and roll. to me, music is divided into two categories: crap i like and crap i dont like. period. so lets all just stop fucking arguing about which band is better/moar metal than any other and just listen to the goddamn music.

the lyrics to this song i find intriguing to say the least. it seems to me to make the most sense looking at it in the fall of the angels in biblical mythology. satan, the angel that opposes yahweh in the bible, revolts against him and tries to overthrow him, even though satan knows he can never do that, as yahweh is the all-powerful creator, which is seen in heafy's lyrics where he talks about how the "beloved rebels" in "self-denying avarice" (the desire to overcome yahweh) invoke bloodshed. in the end, they fail and are condemned to fiery gehenna.

another possible interpretation is that lies are the easiest to teach as truth, and most people would rather go blind clutching lies instead of facing the painful truth.

that's my interpretation. now stop whining bitches, and rock on. \m/

Gods of Music | Reviewer: adam | 9/21/10

Like all of yall say, each band has there own style of music. Trivium has made some of the best music i have ever heard in my life and i started out licening to Atreyu which i still love except there last album just like All That Remains and Bullit which i feel the same way about there last albums but trivium is a god in music all the way around and no band in the history of music is as fast and talented as they are.....................

Trivium ^.^ | Reviewer: Jordan | 6/14/10

this song is really good heafy and beauliel are amazaing at what they do they are both very good guitarists Heafy has a very very very good singing voice and with the combination of Heafy's AMAZING talent and beauliel's guitar talent and Gregoletto's amazing bass talent and travis smith doing wat he does best on the drums all this talent and charisma and amazing written lyrics are gonna put Trivium into the Elite category in the future (if they arent already there) just a great blend of singing and screaming from Matt Heafy the whole band is just great. if they keep making albums sounding like this everybody who listens to this kind of music (metal/meatlcore) will know who Trivium is. Keep the great music coming Trivium

I <3 Trivium, Bullet and Slipknot | Reviewer: Claire | 5/28/10

Love the song, and all of those bands are quite different so there's no comparison to be made. I like all of them in different ways. :)

Yea this song is intense, listening to it right now as well. Love the cover of the album too xD

good call mose and dan. it's not to be a competition, its not a sport. and they are not supposed to sound like anyone but themselves, but you can't deny influence. great metal, these lyrics must have personal meaning but they can be interpreted in many ways.

Labels | Reviewer: Mose | 4/27/10

Why do we have genres and labels? I'm pretty sure bands don't try to sound like another band. That's pointless and is really weird. Metal to me is anything that makes me feel certain emotions that can be good and bad. I'm musically influenced to a certain degree but I'm not going to say one band is better than another or one band sounds like a different band. Comparing and contrasting is good on occasion, but not with music. Sure everyone has their own opinion and I can respect that, but putting a band or musician down isn't very productive and only stirs up the crowd. Sad to see that people still think everything is a competition like were rooting for a football team made of guitarists, vocalists and what not.

What the hell? | Reviewer: Dan | 4/5/10

I don't how the hell you guys got to arguing about who's better between Trivium, Bullet and Slipknot while looking at lyrics, that's just weird. But neither of them are better. They play different music and people all have their own decisions. Personally I like Trivium the most out of them, but I still like all of them. These are lyrics for a Trivium song, so how about you actually comment on the lyrics instead of going off at eachother about which band is better?

Epic song, I'm actually listening to it right now.

agrees with Tristan | Reviewer: vermilion | 3/24/10

I completely agree with Tristan, BFMV is so emo sounding i cant stand listening to it. All that remains hit their peak with their fall of ideals album (great piece of work) but i think trivium sounded best when they were trying to be metallica with their crusade album, which was musically their best album before taking a step back to their older style with shogun.
And before anyone makes comment on my name being vermilion yes i do like slipknots new albums but are incomparable when you put them next to real metal bands, they are more alternate heavy rock then metal.

who's arguing | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/6/10

I totally agree that bullet is good, I have a few albums from both them and trivium. Both amazing in their own ways. Indeed, two different styles completely. BFMV has some good guitar work, and I like it equally with trivium. No point in arguing, each person has their own preference. And to Brandon, they did play together at mayhem fest. Epic.

wow | Reviewer: suzette | 1/14/10

I just have to say that i love trivium (bullet is good too)! im not gona get into this little arguement cause it'll go on forever! Everyone likes something different & who cares what genre a band is as long as u like them! anyways love this song heard live it was awesome!
