Like A Stone Lyrics - Audioslave

Review The Song (24)

On a cobweb afternoon
In a room full of emptiness
By a freeway I confess
I was lost in the pages
Of a book full of death
Reading how we'll die alone
And if we're good we'll lay to rest
Anywhere we want to go

In your house I long to be
Room by room patiently
I'll wait for you there
Like a stone
I'll wait for you there
Alone

And on my deathbed I will pray
To the gods and the angels
Like a pagan to anyone
Who will take me to heaven
To a place I recall
I was there so long ago
The sky was bruised
The wine was bled
And there you led me on

In your house I long to be
Room by room patiently
I'll wait for you there
Like a stone
I'll wait for you there
Alone, alone

And on I read
Until the day was gone
And I sat in regret
Of all the things I've done
For all that I've blessed
And all that I've wronged
In dreams until my death
I will wander on

In your house I long to be
Room by room patiently
I'll wait for you there
Like a stone
I'll wait for you there
Alone, alone

Get a job; know your musical mystery; shut the hell up; apologize; and become human | Reviewer: bereal | 11/3/13

I am not one to bother with such impersonal commenting blog spaces since we don't have to see each other face to face.

Yet, one must speak when one must:
1) For those who take more than 2 minutes to trash talk any experienced musician need to get jobs, therapy, lobotomies, or just shut the f@#$ up. Look at the world in which you live. Without music we would die. Trashing anyone who attempts to bring love, insight, power, healing, understanding through art is simply an act of dumbassedtudedness (yes, this is now a word, get a grip) reflecting on YOUR insecurity, anger, hatred, whatever assortment of Greco-Roman pathologies for which the currently available assortment of antidepressants and antipsychotics don't work because they are intended not to, YET you still take them.
2) The point: Shut up.
3) The dagger: Chris Cornell, Audioslave, Soundgarten, etc., are human beings whose talents are not attributable to the poverty of "our" language and "religious" and "philosophical" customs. Art chooses the artist. WE have no choice. Thelonius Monk, master classical pianist NOT just in Jazz, a feat on its own, but in virtually all musical genres, could not "read" music.
This means nothing because "reading music" is a process created by "those self crowned" as the ultimate arbiters of what written music scansion should look like. Of course having a military and the delusional psychosis of racism and world wide colonization helped such arbiters who, themselves, could likely hardly dance a two step. Pay attention.
4) The underground railroad to minimum brain activity: The lyrics to "Like a Stone" are objectively (even in the Western, slaveholding sense) gorgeous. You can't f!@# with them. End of story. The musical arrangement -- the intensity, meticulousness, ingenuity, and careful simplicity -- facilitating Cornell's voice is not worthy of criticism. Especially not the narcissistic stupidity of anyone who likely cannot even play the basic chords on a piano.
5) For those who actually stupidly wrote slanderous comments here, I hope that you will be humbled by the fact that you can and should be 'deal with' legally since your IP addresses, date stamps, and other various tech DNA are displayed into perpetuity, even if you recant your statement.
6) As penance, perhaps you who deign to be idiots may craft a letter of apology, learn the history of ...hmmmm...humanity? art? courage?.... At least learn how to read, to know metaphor, symbolism, the history of artists globally who are not PUNKS and who DO instead of SAY. Etc.
7) Don't bother bothering me. I already know where and who you are. And I will handled you swiftly. So eat your spinach or shut up. I speak here on behalf of all artists -- of all genres -- during this time of insane intellectual lobotimization (look up the root word if you are drooling here), greed, joblessness, homelessness, sadism, and artlessness.
8) Upload your picture, a video of you singing or playing a real instrument, or...an actual music sheet.
9) C Sharp. B Natural. -- Kamou Da'ood. (find out who HE is and I dare you talk shit aobut him)
10) I am a woman. To see men act like this explains the world. Lift up your skirts boys and get to work.

Seriously?! | Reviewer: John Smith | 4/16/13

It is a great song, just appreciate that. it is a classic and just listen to the song for what it is, awesome. P.S. Johnny G, It is Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave is the same band with Cornell as singer instead of Zack De La Rocha(RATM. Both great bands and just appreciate them.

You must be 8 years old, trying to troll people. That's funny that your name is "Frank" because based on your writing style, you come off as a soccer mom.

You guys are just too high | Reviewer: FrankFRanks | 11/9/12

And maybe Chris C was high too when he wrote the song. All those pathetic philosophical explanations are just a bunch of b . s . The song was just a product of a night of liquor, d r u g s, and wild s e x.
Get a life!

my 2 cents | Reviewer: jeff flarity | 1/31/12

i have songbook and its pretty clear the cobweb lyric and i see on several sites there is a mistake with cold wet. i have trouble hearing the room by room patiently part cause it sounds like rum or roam by room.
i think the song is a guy pondering his future after death and wether he is worthy to go somewhere up there and who he needs to ask to get him there. also seems he felt lost once before and when things were dark he felt held or helped and it gives him hope. very poetic and masterful chris cornell.

Romantic Viewpoint | Reviewer: E Johnson | 1/26/12

The song seems to have a more mourning tendency than a romantic song. Yes, I think the 'book full of death' is a reference to the Bible. He talks of a 'cobweb afternoon' and a 'room full of emptiness', which to me imply a recent death, and the second half of the second verse makes reference to an evening full of wine and being 'led-on'. The song rings of lost love, who the narrator (I'm assuming Chris Cornell didn't write this for a dead lover, so it's a nameless narrator) wishes he could be with this lost love again in this Heaven he is now reading about, which gives him hope despite the loss. Though in the third verse, the talk of 'sat in regret of all the things I've done' seems to imply the narrator realizes he can never see this place, but he can continue to dream of it until he dies.

guys wether u you think it is a love song or if u go by what chris cornell said, doesnt matter, music of any way shape or form should be about your personall prefference, chris cornell may be singing about christian faith and wantting to did, but that dosnt mean you cant long to be at your girlfriends house waiting for her like a stone, know what i mean bros?

ACTUALLY... | Reviewer: alexandriadark | 8/27/11

Chris Cornell was reading the Bible for those of you who haven't figured that out yet. It's not a love song. He's referring to trying to get to the Christian Heaven by any means--and deity--necessary. He's awaiting the Christian God and Death to take him away. The lyric is "cobweb". And Chris Cornell spells his last name with a "C". I noticed SOMEONE on here didn't know that.(:

IMO | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/12/11

Im not a christian...Im an atheist I guess...I mean no insult to beliviers of any religion besides scientology because...I mean come on XD

That out of the way the book he is reading is definetly the Bible in this song IMO

cobweb is correct | Reviewer: BonG_HitZ | 9/20/10

i have the soundbook... it says cobweb. even someone whose 99.99999% deaf can hear that anyway. plus if you listen to the song hes talkin about being in a room for a long time alone... put 2 and 2 together idiots. those who agree with me actually have functioning brains. anyway, audioslave is a good band that was thrown together. theres almost too much talent there to be in one room at the same time. great song. full of meanings...

Johny G ur retarded | Reviewer: Nate | 6/27/09

temple or the dog is way better than audioslave and i hope u knew that temple of the dog wasnt even cornell's real band. that was a band he put together in order to make a cd dedicated to his friend who died. his original band was soundgarden

actually | Reviewer: Beta | 1/7/09

actually, Cornell said in the interview that the song is about waiting for Death...

If I should be feeling so immersed in this song that I should feel it's about love, then my lover would be Death.

Beautiful song. Very strong indeed.

whatever | Reviewer: dsaffga | 11/4/08

guys, kinda stupid arguing about a lyric. it can go both ways. point is, that it isnt on a "awesome sunny" afternoon. cobweb and cold wet can be read as the same thing, depressing, negative, dull etc. it doesn't matter which as long as you still understand the tone and mood of the song. take a chill pill

Like a Stone | Reviewer: Alpha | 10/3/08

Wow!!! Talk about love, a love that is so deep, so passionate. Waiting forever for "you" that its turn "me" into a stone, like a stone that sit and waits for that something. "I" know that "I"'ve done wronged and was blessed, because in "your" house "I"'ve read that book(the bible?), it talks about death and heaven. So now that "I"'ve died or if "I" died, "I" want to go in front of the gods and the angels and ask them to bring me back to that house, where "I" sat and wait for "you". Because where "I" sat and wait for you is "my" heaven, and on "I" will sit and wait for "You"

IDIOT | Reviewer: Dan | 5/26/08

YOURE AN IDIOT OR WHAT? DAMN... He says "on a COBWEB".

If other sites say stupid things like this is because they copy the lyrics from the same first stupid who posted the wrong thing.
Please, dont do that with Kornell lyrics.
