The song starts with a beautiful city,showing lots of vehicles in long shot. it is only after a while,the song starts in a slow rhythmic way.It is very interesting to see that all the objects are standing still except the camera. then there seems to have a collection of pictures arranged one after the other. It is almost in the middle of the poem...the city is shown again. Then slowly the speed of the poem increases....And the poem ends by showing the same city in the same way.
The poem brings lonely emptiness and their names are written in stones.
But they are forgotten. This poem is so deep and relevant....!!!

I love this song, I love the Kinks. One of my first jobs was working with bassist Peter Quafes dad. He hated Ray and Dave Davies, as a result he didn't exactly offer any insights. I heard another version of the songs origin, was that Ray was living with a tranny for a while, but who knows, I still love him and his music.

It's amazing this song was written over 36 years ago. It is so spot on to our current situation in the good ole USA. I was a Kinks freak back then, but I never thought that these lyrics would rise up and hit me between the eyes. The whole Preservation Acts 1 and 2 are worth a listen - from Flash (aka Bernie Madoff) and Mr Black (acting more like a Teaparty elected president/prime minister rather than like Obama), to the falling of the housing bubble and the reasons why ("Demolition").
