God Lyrics
Performed by John LennonReview The Song (27)
God is a concept
By which we measure
Our pain
I'll say it again
God is a concept
By which we measure
Our pain
I don't believe in magic
I don't believe in I-ching
I don't believe in Bible
I don't believe in tarot
I don't believe in Hitler
I don't believe in Jesus
I don't believe in Kennedy
I don't believe in Buddha
I don't believe in Mantra
I don't believe in Gita
I don't believe in Yoga
I don't believe in kings
I don't believe in Elvis
I don't believe in Zimmerman
I don't believe in Beatles
I just believe in me
Yoko and me
And that's reality
The dream is over
What can I say?
The dream is over
Yesterday
I was the Dreamweaver
But now I'm reborn
I was the Walrus
But now I'm John
And so dear friends
You'll just have to carry on
The dream is over

It's a concept | Reviewer: Andrea | 2/7/12
When he says I don't believe in Beatles, he's referring to the way people viewed the Beatles in the sixties. To many they were 'gods'. He's saying he doesn't believe in Beatles as a group, as higher power. Not that he doesn't believe in Paul, Ringo and George(at the time). He treated Paul like a brother, but as many family relationships it got complicated as he got older. Yoko and Linda often said that they both wanted to speak, but obviously had way too much pride. Also, Yoko could not have split up the band if she tried. Things were falling apart even before she came in the studio. John wanted to write different songs than Paul. Just take a look at the White Album Glass Onion vs Back In The U.S.S.R.. George was getting a bit resentful. Even Ringo was tired of the band, he quit during the recording of the White Album leaving Paul to play drums on various tracks. Also, Paul sometimes restricted John from saying what was on his mind because he felt it was too forward and would ruin the band's image and get bad press. This was often shown when they were asked about politics. They were just four brothers who found it time to move out. But all in all, God is a good song and even if you believe in at least one thing he sings of, at least the ending is nice. Their dream is over, but their legend lives on.
Reply to Carlee: for all of you who think yoko broke up the band, RETARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/22/11
if u idiots really believe yoko was the only reason y the beatles split, u should just go home and listen to ur stupid ass justin bieber. they split cuz they just couldn't do it anymore, they could see right thru each other. it just wasn't the same anymore, the MacCartney/Lennon partnership had turned into a full-out competition of who could write the better song which also included George. they were all getting on each others nerves, oh and for the retard who thought John was the bossy one ( Carlee), he wasn't . the bossy one at that point was Paul. they all left for different reasons, not beacuse of yoko, yes it did annoy them having her around but thats as far as it went. sorry for all of this but i hate when ignorant ppl like Carlee start talking about shit they know nothing about

" He just sounds like he totally hates Paul, George, and Ringo, well Paul and Ringo, if you miss him, listen to the song carefully and see if you still do!! I'm sure John was a great friend to them all at the time, but now he just sounds like they all hated him and he's completely innocent. He's not, it was his fault for marrying Yoko, who partially broke up the Beatles, it's his fault for being bossy and I bet him and Paul made George sad because they wouldn't even give up 10 minutes of their day helping George with his songs, and they just payed attention to their songs the whole day, they probably even dreamed about what they were going to put into their songs!! And I feel even worse for Ringo, because they didn't even pay attention to him most of the time! Ringo didn't even get one song on every album, he got about 14-17 songs to sing during the whole 8 year Beatle career! It's mostly John's fault, no offense to him. =( sorry for rambling on, I just needed to get that out of my system, and state my point. "
You have no idea what you're talking about AT ALL.
John and Paul were the main lyricists of the band, George knew this, everybody knew this.
George most likely rarely went to them with lyric ideas, but I'm sure if he did that both of them looked 'em over and discussed them as a band if they were good enough, what ever.
Ringo was the DRUMMER. He sang the songs that his voice sounded better singing. You don't think he was happy?
Don't talk about them like you know them, you have no idea how they felt or acted towards each other when cameras were off and journalists were away.
RE: A Question for the Atheist | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/29/11
"I just have one question...especially for the scientific atheists. I don't mean this in a degrading or sarcastic way, but if God is not real...Who has been changing my life and answering my most special, impossible prayers? Who has been giving me supernatural strength when I've suffered traumatic situations? Who has given me true love in my heart for my enemies...that's not normal. Who has been teaching my heart spiritual truths that match up perfectly with the Scriptures."

God is not the problem, Religion is | Reviewer: musicfreak4563 | 7/24/11
I personally believe in a higher power, but do not follow any one religion. I think. People get too swept up in their religion and start condemning those who believe differently than they do. I personally think that as long as you are a good person, God will accept you into heaven/paradise/etc. regardless of you're personal beliefs. Also, in regards to the person who said we need God to give us peace, I believe that if God wanted to just intervene like that, he would've done it a long time ago and prevented humanity from reaching the state it is currently in. I think we need to realize for ourselves that violence is not the answer, rather than have this realization handed to us

People keep talking about how good god is but fail to mention the deaths and suffering he inflicted and those he sent to hell just for thinking for themselves. How he preffers to keep women down and even advocate slavery. Yes, the god of the bible does not say anything about abolishing slavery or is it even in the 10 commandments to not keep slaves or servants. Hell, the 1st 4 commandments are only about himself. What a selfish douche. Praise Buddha!
We need God to bring the peace which John Lennon longed for | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/17/11
I don't know what John Lennon believed or didn't believe. I'd say he was confused. But I believe in God. It's much easier to believe in Him than not to believe. What person on this earth could create a brain, or an eye - which is so perfect. What person could create a flower so beautiful and perfect in design. What person could love us like God loves us, enough to die the most horrible death to save us. How could we not believe in Him who created us and all that we are. May God forgive us all for our lack of faith and lack of love. May God bring us to true faith, love for our neighbour and love for Him. May He brings us all back into peace and harmony with one another. I know that John Lennon wanted peace in the world, but he wanted to do it on his own. We can't do it on our own - we need our God and our Saviour. He is the only one that can bring it about. We just have to cooperate with His Grace.

God IS A concept | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/3/11
Jhon was saying that anything that we think is going or fix all our problems exept ourselves is just a big concept. We need to fix our own problems. Not God, Buddah,or the messiah. We must end our own problems. Thats what I think John was trying to tell us.

Who has been teaching my heart spiritual truths that match up perfectly with the Scriptures. It seems that God will show me something in my heart, and then i read it in the Bible. It's almost like the apostles and i are experiencing the same God. That not said in a mean way:) wish you could hear my tone of voice.
THE CRITIC TO THE JOHN LENNON | Reviewer: Hadrian Hoax Lex | 3/20/11
truly, I disagree if the religion is the pain or the problem, but religion is the way, to see the existence of us about, "Where are coming from of us" and "Where we will going after this life". remember, the world we life now is not only here, but also "THERE", the place where we will must to responsible about what we doing in this world, BY GOD, of course, so, my opinion about this lyric just only the expression frustration and degradation about life of materialism and individualism that never give the solution four our spiritual, and here ISLAM is the solution,....,
about jesus | Reviewer: Daniel Spiteri | 2/13/11
Friends, first of all u have to know, if you think that God is a problem or whatever, then you're not understanding the fact that the brainwashing church has ended,it doesn't exist anymore. God is love, peace and harmony between humans. God won't send u to hell because of your sins, you would live in hell if you let sins beat you, but only in this world. But because god is love, he forgives. Not that he needs you, because he loves you. John Lennon also preached for peace and love and harmony, so they kinda have something in common.
There is NO GOD, there should be NO BORDERS.... | Reviewer: Stuart Guss | 1/29/11
That last review about what John was supposedly saying when he wrote his song "God" is pure ans utter nonsense! In retrospect it is easy to say, "Oh, John meant this or John meant that", but I have found that John Lennon was a loving man who was looking for answers to the questions he found both within and around him and simply expressed his views, pure and simple.
John didn't believe in God.
John didn't believe in the way in which we turn people into idols.
John didn't believe in borders.
John didn't believe in "The Bible", a magic book supposedly written by God, but actually written by many men over many centuries.
The first "Bible" didn't even come into existence until the Papal Enclave in approximately 500 A.D. and more was left out then was included, such as the writings and teachings of his closest "disciple", Mary who in all probability was his wife, as being unmarried and without child during those days would have been considered very odd and Jesus most certainly would have been banished and considered gay by the people of that time, place and thinking.
Grow up and stop trying to put John's works in your own little world view as he deserves better than being placed in that very small box.
John DID say a6t one time that the Beatles "were bigger than Jesus", but this was allegorical and a metaphor, not him running for the position of "Son of God" (whatever the heck that's supposed to be!).....
If the Bible is right, and we we ALL made in God's image, THEN WE ARE ALL THE SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF GOD.
John said it best when he simply said:
God is a concept
By which we measure
Our pain
I'll say it again
God is a concept
By which we measure
Our pain
I don't believe in magic
I don't believe in I-ching
I don't believe in Bible

THESE WERE HIS WORDS, AND THIS IS WHAT HE MEANT!
At a time when we were all reeling from the Vietnam War, the Nixon scandals and the Beatles finally called it quits, John was approached so many times by people who felt lost and helpless that he felt he needed to respond to them, and to ease their pain left from the calm and Peace they had found when listening to his music, and that of The Beatles.
John said many times that Religion was the source of more hatred, more death, more bloodshed and more bull shit than any other concept he had ever pondered, and he was not a stupid man. He just called it like he saw it and I agree;
THE WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE WITHOUT RELIGION, WITHOUT FAKE LINES ON A MAP CREATING BORDERS AND DIVIDERS BETWEEN PEOPLE AND THAT WE WOULD ALL DO QUITE NICELY WITHOUT THE CONFLICTS THAT THESE ARTIFICIAL CONCEPTS HAVE BROUGHT INTO OUR LIVES AND HAVE SO MASSIVELY BLED THIS WORLD DRY...
They say that Armageddon will begin in the Middle east, and we see a War of religions already in progress between the Muslim World and the Christian World. All you have to do is open your eyes and look at the corpses, as they are strewn from Nazi Germany, to Bosnia, to the war torn countries of Africa, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as anywhere these two not so divergent religions meet.
Religion isn't the cure, it's the PROBLEM. Maybe you need to read his words again and not try to spin them into your Christian view of the world (one which he clearly rejected as bullshit, as do I).
