freshmen Lyrics

Performed by The Verve Pipe
Review The Song (26)

When I was young and knew everything
And she a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I'm guilt stricken
Sobbing with my head on the floor
Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice no...

I can't be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

(Chorus)
For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and
We'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

My best friend took a week's
Vacation to forget her
His girl took a week's worth of
Valium and slept
Now he's guilt stricken sobbing with his
Head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really
Wept he says

I can't be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

(Chorus)

We've tried to wash our hands of all of this
We never talk of our lack in relationships
And how we're guilt stricken sobbing with our
Heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip
We'd say

I can't be held responsible
Cause she was touching her face
And I won't be held responsible
She fell in love in the first place

(Chorus)x2
For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and
We'd never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen
(SECOND TIME)
we were merely freshmen
we were only freshmen

Guh. Perspective. Aspects. That stuff. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/27/11

Well personally I grew tired of the whole abortion idea, even if it is quite likely true.
(Oh and, it makes the song a great tool for critique on our social structures, ultimately it should really be the pregnant someone's choice, would take a real douché to tell someone to live their life this way even if that isn't a life to them... I had to, too many arrogant people around.)

The whole "babies breath" part which I assume is where the abortion idea comes from is also a flower common on weddings. Shoe full of rice I guess most got but, it's about weddings, throwing rice, all that.
Hence; "Stop a 'babies breath' and a 'shoe full of rice' would translate into; Run the hell away from the wedding.
Personally I also choose to view wedding symbolically as commitment and not neccessarily a wedding.
So; Run the hell away from her when she needs you and you're meant to be there.

Now secondly, the best friend's girl "taking a week's worth of valium (overdosing, lethal proportions) and slept (died)" makes little sense in the given context. Why would she?
Along with the whole concept of the friend and narrative I sharing their sin, I'd say it's a fair guess it's the same girl. Whether she was with both at the same time or they each failed her one after another, no clue, and perhaps there is no poetic value to that knowledge.

The song ends up being about the mistakes and regrets of when we knew less. And hey, that goes for all ages, no one is omnipotent right?
(please don't say "God is" without thinking it through. If a god is omnipotent and almighty, he is also a sadistic f*ck)

Personally, I once got one of those little innocent notes followed by a "committed suicide" announcement and the "It's my fault" thoughts. Well, as for me, this song is the perfect defense.
She fell in love, I shouldn't be held responsible for that. Nevermind the borderline insanity and how far it went.
Than still, that's never the case, we always find some tragedy to feel guilty about.
Whereafter we put too much stock in a stranger's word once sung.

Anyhow. Great song. I bet it can mean a dozen different things. Staying on my favorites playlist.

i am 100% a supporter of abortion. and most people who dont like it are guys, who dont have to deal with it and can just walk away from the situation and women who have never had sex before and havent really thought about what they would do in that situation. have you ever seen 16 and pregnant? sorry but most the chicks on that show should of gotten one because that child will be neglected and either the grandparents will end up taking care of the child or it will grow up with one parent because the guy bails out. teenagers either need to keep it in their pants or need to figure out that god doesnt solve problems, people do and listen to themselves and not their bible thumping parents. saying this this song is really sad and yet inspiring.

life is what we make it | Reviewer: cinderella | 12/29/10

i believe that all children are created by God and even a fetus on a woman's womb hads the right to live. however, we can never judge people if they abort their baby. we never know what they've been thru during those times and we can never really understand the true situation unless we're in the same shit! i honestly admire young ladies having abortion. first is, they had sex early, they carry fetus on their wombs and then after, their brave enuf to get it abort though they know its a mortal sin and they might not go to heaven and dealing with such problem in the eraly age (peer pressure, adoloscent, parents expectation and killing a live person in their tummy will really make their conscince dig them up to hell. however, im not supporting abortion. its case to case basis. sometimes, its young adults fault on why are they on that kind of situation. some of their parent=s would accept it, some really wont! and if that happens to me, rather than killing my baby, ill myself instead, even if we both die, atleast i know thta my parents would accept the fact that i cant fae them due to my mistake. people should know their limitations on whatever their dealing with,.. everythings a matter of choice. you just to accept it once its already there. but once you make a decision out of it, be sure you can handle it. becasue YOU YOUSELF MADE THAT! SO DEAL WITH IT! :D

no to abortion. | Reviewer: RONALD SPEIRS | 11/25/10

We do not support abbortion.FIrst it may cause death to the mother, obviously baby's dead so two lives are wasted because of these act. @ Kate even if your raped and you got pregnant. You do not have to abort it, the child was never involve with rape. Only God could decide what is the best future for you.

I'm not saying i support abortion, but i wouldn't try to stop them if they wanted one. My girlfriend just recently had one, we're seniors in high school and she feels like she did the right thing but she cries over it everyday. This song reminds me what her and i went through during that point in our life's. We shouldn't judge other people on what they do, whether its getting an abortion of smoking pot or anything like that. They what ever they feel is right for them, and who are we to judge? We've all done something wrong or stupid and most of it will regret it everyday for the rest of our life's. Stop judging other people and their decisions until you to become perfect and do everything perfectly and flawless. This song has taught me that you should own up to your responsibilities and that what ever decisions you make you have to live with.

I thought this song was about a guy cheating on his girlfriend then her committing suicide because of it. And i think all of you people who are sooo against abortion should really think about what your saying...So if a girl got raped and got pregnant she should have the baby? NO! you girls should see what you would really choose, and if you do get raped i hope you enjoy looking into the eyes of your rape child.

another aspect | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/8/10

In the chorus, he is saying that he wasnt considering the consiquences of his actions, and he didnt think anything bad could happen to him, so when his girlfriend commits suicide, he is "guilt strickin' sobbin, with his head on the floor"... Beautiful song. Truthful song. What else can you say?

Abortion | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/23/09

Its a beautiful song but I never thought that this song was about the regretful abortion. I am complete against it and I believe if you are old enough to have sex and you are old enough to take care of a child. As of right now i'm a 21 year old virgin and I'm waiting on marrage

Abortion...? What's more... | Reviewer: Paul | 11/27/08

An interesting element in the song is that these two guys in it seem so detached from the responsibility they have towards these girls they become intimately engaged with.

Everyone wants to have a solid friend, girlfriend or boyfriend who will stick with them through thick and thin; be there when we most need them, but most never want to make the sacrifice for others. Pathetic really...

Abortion? | Reviewer: Hillary | 11/21/08

Okay, first I must admit that I might be being naive but I don't understand how he's singing about abortion.
But since I read the other reviews I wanted to put in my take, even if it changes just one person's view on abortion.
Making abortion illegal wouldn't help anyone, born or unborn. Making it illegal wouldn't stop people from having abortions, it would make them have one illegaly, where they would most likely hurt themselves more then if it was legal.
If your friend has had one, don't try to make them feel guilty, because you don't have any idea what they are going through so your opinion is biased by ignorance.
When people say abortions put the women through hell, I don't think they realize that there would be a whole other hell if they would have had the baby, especially if they are a teenager.
Yes, there is always adoption but your body shouldn't have to be put through the experience of birth when it hasn't even fully developed yet.
Also, the arguement of when life begins is pointless, because everyone has their own opinion on when life starts and that will never change.
It's funny because so many who people care so much about life before birth, don't give a shit about life AFTER birth. This world is already overpopulated.
Think about it.
Would the baby AND the mother benefit or hurt from the birth?

i didnt realise what this song was about til i read other pple's reaview. i just heard it for the first time a couple of days ago and loved it. i believe that abortion is wrong and i wld never support my friends to get one. it's not just about them anymore. fact is, there is a life inside of them that is not being given a chance to live like you and i.

@ | Reviewer: KNIGGS | 4/14/08

i think everybody needs to just stay out of everybodys business just because you dont think abortion is right other people might
and if you happen to get into that situation you do what you belive is right

Its not wrong | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/27/08

It is sick that people might make there friends regret there decisions. There are babies born every day and they suffer until the day that they die wishing that they had never been born. If your against it dont do it but dont go against someone who is going to do it

touching | Reviewer: Me | 1/18/08

this song is a very touching song and deals with a very strong issue....although contrversial it deals with the aftermath of such a tremendous life altering acton. Its not about the whole abortoin issue its about the effects it has on people and how fucked life can get.....that is the beauty of music though although a sad topic one can read whatever they want into it and apply it to their own lives
