chop suey Lyrics - System of a Down

Review The Song (67)

Wake up (wake up)
Grab a brush and put a little makeup
Hide the scars to fade away the shake up
(Hide the scars to fade away the shake )
Why'd you leave the keys up on the table?
Here you go create another fable

(You wanted to)
Grab a brush and put on a little makeup
(You wanted to)
Hide the scars to fade away the shake up
(You wanted to)
Why'd you leave the keys up on the table?
(You wanted to)

I don't think you trust, in, my,
Self-righteous suicide,
I, cry, when angels deserve to die

Wake up (wake up)
Grab a brush and put a little makeup
Hide the scars to fade away the shake up
Why'd you leave the keys up on the table?
Here you go create another fable

(You wanted to)
Grab a brush and put on a little makeup
(You wanted to)
Hide the scars to fade away the shake up
(You wanted to)
Why'd you leave the keys up on the table?
(You wanted to)

I don't think you trust in my
Self-righteous suicide,
I cry, when angels deserve to die
In my self-righteous suicide,
I cry, when angels deserve to die

Father (father)
Father (father)
Father (father)
Father (father)
Father into your hands, I commend my spirit
Father into your hands, why have you forsaken me?
In your eyes, forsaken me
In your thoughts, forsaken me
In your heart, forsaken me

Oh, trust in my, self-righteous suicide
I cry when angels deserve to die
In my self-righteous suicide
Why cry when angels deserve to die?

Self righteous | Reviewer: LostedSister | 7/11/14

Everyone has their own interpretation of these lyrics...words that are meaningful to some and not at all the others...I lost my sister to suicide...her demons got the best of her unable to cope with her relapse after almost 2 years clean plus the stolen items from family matters to people that didn't matter to her her demons made her into someone that her herself hated if she would have giving the family a chance to help we would have all been there again to stand by her side and be her support system however she could no longer live with herself and make her choice to end her life and i do think that she thought she was self righteous in what she did thinking she was saving the family some how...she was one of the most beautiful people inside and out today she would have been 23 and I find myself listening to this song and believe it or not it makes me feel a little better but doesn't stop the pain

awsome song but... | Reviewer: anonymous | 1/8/14

Oh for gods sake does every song gave to be related to jesus christ or any other religion ? (Im not atheist) bloody hell just like the song for how it is and not its meaning and there is no right or wrong way to interpret a song each mans interpretation is his own.

can someone store a memory of an imaginary sky-god in their brains? yes
can they yell at that memory circuit (in their brain) while they die on a cross? yes
can that same person invision a sense of superoity over humans while arranging himself to die (suicide)? yes
since said person values their sky-god above all else--this world, humanity, scientific literacy...does that make him superior to a humanist who values humans over religion?

its always about love | Reviewer: angelday | 6/24/13

its about an affair with a married woman he falls in love with. she covers up, and she leaves the keys on the table (invites him in) the fable is her coverup. she is the angel who deserves to die - and his self righteous suicide is to stop things, even tho it kills him - for her sake. The self righteousness is a bitter admission of hypocracy. the words from the agony on the cross, are his agony as he "takes up his cross" in the christian manner. (suffering for right)

wise old rock star | Reviewer: Joe | 5/18/13

I think Joe Walsh says it right. He will never tell anybody the meaning of any of his songs to him. He used to do it and he could see he would crush a fans meaning of the song to them. "Music & songs are a beautiful thing we all share as humans"."Who am I to tell somebody what my lyrics mean to them".I think he realized we all live different lives and see the world with different views.Music and lyrics can mean different things to different people depending on their experiences! Music & lyrics are a personal thing we can all share.

Pure Power! | Reviewer: Brandin | 2/6/13

Interesting... I've always wanted to know the first verse. Does it make sense to me, nah not really; domestic violence i.e beaten wives & abused daughters, father/son relationships gone awry, yeah maybe. You can read whatever you want into it. For me, that song just goes off and still does 12 years on. NOW WAKE UP! and sing along...

don't get you people | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/30/12

I just read these reviews and I can't help but feel completely sorry for you. Why are you arguing? System of a down is a good band. I don't much about them but I'm sure their lyrics mean something. Just because someone is high doesn't mean their mind doesn't still work.

Enmity. | Reviewer: APryllEunii | 5/4/12

att a deeper angle, It looks like a song of rejection of his Father,. in the song, self righteous suicide, self willed
Even not so, "Father, why hast thou forsaken me?" familiar? It's Jesus on the cross... that time, our sins put on Him caused His father not to face Him, but indeed.. it is according ti His plan that he must die to SAVE us. :)

The means of the songs | Reviewer: Erikgondo | 9/12/11

I heard on a couple occasions that a Self righteous- suicide, refers to overdosing on drugs purposely, more commonly heroin. my friend told me they talked about it in rehab all the time.
If you listen to the song, it kind of sounds like a father beating his wife and son.?

for stupid reasons too, like....
Leaving the keys on the table, cause that's not were they go?

Making sure friends, family, and colleagues dont find out....
brush your hair and put on make up to hide the evidence?

The father lyrics, I actually believe refer to a father and the child not understanding why hes is like that. The child is literally asking his father, why have you forsaken me? Why have you let me down, abandon me....?

Why cry when angle deserve to die...
I think its talking about, why all this horrible shit is happening to him and his family, when he sees people that are pieces of shit and that others think are good (angles) dont have to go through what he has too. Not understanding why nothing is happening to the people that deserve it! deserve to die, or maybe something not so server. Die = metaphor for repercussions? They'll get theirs! Dont fret, just worry about his situation!?

Now the whole trusting in the persons self righteous- suicide, I think can go two ways...?

The mon telling her son, I know your going to hate me and never forgive me for this, (the taking of her own life) but I can't do this anymore, you'll be ok and come out of this stronger, but its to late for me?

Or the son telling his family, he can't live with whats happen to him and his mom, and believe that his suicide will only better his outcome in life, Cause what hes been through, he believes he'll just become a low life and or drug addict?

Or maybe, consider all that and the whole song is about one person with a drug addiction and continues to use cause of all this negative shit thats happening to him/her family?

Ok, now before you go and critique me and say that's a stupid theory....
Notice I ended everything in question marks!
Cause I really dont know what the song is truely about!
And I agree with Abby- "bull crap" its is just a song and people can interpret it how ever they choose. But there is a fine line between being opinionated and being a forceful ass!

After reading all that your probably going to think....
"fuck, this guy has one hell of an imagination!" Lol
but I'm about %78 positive self righteous- suicide means overdosing on drugs purposely. And using that, that's what I came up with. Lol

But yeah, thats what I think peoples.... Enjoy. Lol :)

@Atheist | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/21/11

@Atheist all of the band are Armenian-Americans and Armenians follow the christian religion not muslim. anyway this is what Daron said "the song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I were now to die from a drug abuse, they might say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs. Hence the line, 'I cry when angels deserve to die.' The lyric 'Father, into your hands I commend my spirit' is a reference to Jesus' death on the cross, as, according to the Gospels, it was one of the seven things Jesus said while dying." so it is a reference to jesus

Fuck Screamo: to rita | Reviewer: K | 8/6/11

1. this is not a screamo band, they actually have talent and actually sing, they don't just scream shit and call it a song. screamo is something kids pent up with anger decide to make a song but they just play random ass notes on an instrument and scream into the mike

About ones father | Reviewer: jaycarl | 7/16/11

This is one of my favorite songs of all time and this is what it means to me.

There are two people in everyone’s life that are supposed to show you how to live this life. Their names are mother and father.

A boy especially needs his father to instill confidence, willingness, strength and courage to get through this crazy life.

Not all fathers are created equal. Some are given these tools by their own fathers and some learn the hard way and some never learn at all to deal with life.

If you do not have these tools life will consume you. If these men have kids they too have a greater risk of being consumed.

My father loved me but was unable to give me the tools I needed to live a normal life. Learning things the hard way presented great challenges. Some of them accomplished and some just to difficult.

When you learn things the hard way your character becomes distorted and you develop a sense of self-righteousness.

When you have kids 1 of 2 things can happen, you can choose a self-righteous life and blind yourself to your own character distortions which will forsake your children or you can commit a self-righteous suicide by looking in the mirror and identifying your own issues and do something that will not only change your life but also the lives of the ones you truly love.

Doing something about it can mean different things to different people. My own way of dealing with it is giving up everything that would take my attention off doing the right thing for my two boys.

I have committed a self-righteous suicide because being my self was not working.

Every day I live for my dying wish which is to be the father I dreamed of having all my life.

There is so much wrong I have done and so many things I have failed at. BEING A GOOD FATHER WILL NEVER BE ONE OF THEM FOR I HAVE NO RIGHT TO FAIL MY CHILDREN.

If you’re considering breaking the cycle you must be prepared to BREAK yourself first.

i love this song i really do. all the years ive listened to this Song I never understood what it was about and all thanks to “it’s not all about Jesus”. This song is definitely a tribute to all the victims of domestic violence.

Bull crap | Reviewer: Abby | 4/15/11

It's just a song for crying out loud! If you weren't the one who wrote it, then you DON'T know what it's about. So stop making your own interpertations on what it's supposed to mean. All of these are opinions.
