Casey Jones Lyrics
Performed by Grateful DeadReview The Song (5)
This old engine
makes it on time
Leaves Central Station
at a quarter to nine
Hits River Junction
at seventeen to
at a quarter to ten
you know it's trav'lin again
Drivin' that train
High on cocaine
Casey Jones you better
watch your speed
Trouble ahead
Trouble behind
and you know that notion
just crossed my mind
Trouble ahead
The Lady in Red
Take my advice
you be better off dead
Switchman sleepin
Train hundred and two
is on the wrong track and
headed for you
Drivin' that train
High on cocaine
Casey Jones you better
watch your speed
Trouble ahead
Trouble behind
and you know that notion
just crossed my mind
Trouble with you is
The trouble with me
Got two good eyes
but we still don't see
Come round the bend
You know it's the end
The fireman screams and
The engine just gleams
Drivin' that train
High on cocaine
Casey Jones you better
watch your speed
Trouble ahead
Trouble behind
and you know that notion
just crossed my mind

Grew up on this song...in the 90's | Reviewer: JB | 10/19/10
I was born in 1986. yes eighty six. Is it bad that i knew this song by hart and considered it one of my favorites by the time i was 10? not just this one...but last dance with mary jane, purple haze, and my personal favorite Eric Clapton's

Cocaine was legal at the time of Casey's crash additinally it was not unreasonable for its potential to be used by such a class of individuals such as train operators or drivers of long haul operations etc. As a matter of fact if you drank Coca Cola at that time you've consumed cocaine as it was a major ingredient such as caffiene or guarana today!

Turn up the volume when you hear this... listen closely right before the song begins and you'll hear a nice, long snort.
Classic Grateful Dead Song | Reviewer: Kevin Scanlon | 10/23/07
A great comic song on the hazards of drug use that refreshed the memory of Casey Jones in the public consciousness, albeit in an unflattering light. He was not a drug user but this song has continued to give people that impression. The original ballad about him that made him famous was first published by Seibert and Newton in 1909 ("Casey Jones, The Brave Engineer") and it too was a comedy song that was sung on the vaudeville circuit and lives on in 40+ versions. Poor Casey has YET to have a hit song about him that honors his selfless sacrifice in a sober manner! It's been 107 years and counting, people.
Great song! | Reviewer: Casey | 6/11/05
I was named after this song so I think it's the greatest. Overall though it's still a really good song no matter what my name is. These guys have a great rhymic ability and you really see it come out on a song like this. It's probably one of my favorite Grateful Dead songs.
