Bury Me With It Lyrics - Modest Mouse

Review The Song (21)

We were shootin at a mound of dirt
Well nothing was broken nothing was hurt
But I probably really should have been at work
But if my free time's gone would you promise me this that you will

Please bury me with it
Please bury me with it

Well as sure as planets come I know that they end
And if I'm here when that happens just promise me this my friend

Please bury me with it
I just don't need none of that mad max bullshit

Well the suit got tight and it split at the seams
But I kept it out of habit and I kept it real clean
But if it's getting faded, if it's runnin' outta thread
Could you do this for me my friend?

Please bury me with it
Please bury me with it

sponsored links
Well we moved to the left and we moved to the right
And sure as hell we stayed out almost every single night
But if the party's over, if the fun has to end
Could you do this for me my friend, would you just

Please bury me with it
Please bury me with it

Good news for people who love bad news
We've lost the plot and we just can't choose
We are hummingbirds who are just not willing to move
And that's good news for people who love bad news
We are hummingbirds who lost the plot
And we will not move
We have good news for anyone
Who loves bad news

We were aiming for the moon, we were shooting at the stars
But the kids were just shooting at the buses and the cars
So dont drink the water, dont you breathe the air
And if its gotten to that point then I have to declare

Please bury me with it
Please bury me with it

Well fads they come and fads they go
And God I love that rock and roll
Well the point was fast but it was too blunt to miss
Life handed us a paycheck, we said "We worked harder than this!"

Please bury me with it
Please bury me with it

Oh shit now!

We are hummingbirds who are just not willing to move
And there's good news for people who love bad news

We are hummingbirds who lost the plot
And we will not move
We have great news for anyone who loves bad news

The whole album has a theme of Death and No Afterlife | Reviewer: thomas wilson IV | 5/16/12

At first listens i heard it the wrong way. I thought more like bury it with me. Tho as soon as i fixed tht f up it makes total sence. As soon as the things tht makes him happy come to an end, he wants to die and become a part of it even though not possible. Not stay around to see it turn to shit. Seriously, i don't need none of that mad max bullshit.
The whole album has a theme of dying, not wanting to, and mainly because when we die nothing happens. But here he's saying that he'd like to live life to fullest and when those good things are done with, hopefully he can die with them where there's an afterlife, which he does not believe. We just float on, like any other object would.

the song isn't really about dying. what he's saying is that there are things that he considers important in life, partying, his suit, free time, etc, and without those things, he'd rather be dead. great song, as most MM songs are.

background lyrics | Reviewer: Berg | 1/17/11

I'm not getting into trying to interpret this song, it's so full of references and meaning that I would never be able to stop.

I just have a question to anyone with exceptionally good hearing or something - what the heck is he singing in the background, behind the last "we are hummingbirds..."-part? I can hear that there is actual words but I can't for my life figure out what they are. Anyone?!

Well... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/26/10

First off you should all learn how to speak english, you sound like a bunch of 13 year olds.
The song is about dying, and taking all the things with you afterward. Maybe not physically taking them to the grave/next life, but more keeping them from the rest of us by removing them (The free time, the memories etc.) from the earth along with him.

personal Interpretation | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/29/10

When he dies he doesn't want his soul to go on but rather it completely die (mad max bullshit) he (meaning consciousness or soul) doesn't believe it will or he hopes it wont (signify the lyrics with the rest of humanity if you want, but in a technicality he can only speak from his one conscious self)

song is wickeddd sickkk! | Reviewer: almaa$-ggg | 2/2/10

haha emo? ooookkkkaaayyy emo and indie are total

if your looking for the lyrical meaning its rite in the first couple of lines "Well as sure as planets come I know that they end
And if I'm here when that happens just promise me this my friend...please bury me with it" it's the same message in each line which makes the song so genius, its just stating something he enjoys that is happening, and when it comes to an end rather than trying to help it, stop it from happening, or redeem it, hed rather just die with it. even in the first line of the song,But I probably really should have been at work But if my free time's gone would you promise me this that you will (bury me with it) if his free time is over and he is no longer having fun anymore and has to work rest of his life he'd rather just be buried with his "fun" and end it. the only line in this song that has a slightly different message is when he is stating that humanity is at a downfall and will be the death of itself - "We were aiming for the moon, we were shooting at the stars
But the kids were just shooting at the buses and the cars
So dont drink the water, dont you breathe the air
And if its gotten to that point then I have to declare." this obviously means before we were coming together and doing great things (shooting for the stars) now were like little kids blowing up buses and cars (suicide bombings/war) and finally coming to the end of the world (dont u drink the water -chemical warfare dont you breathe the air - radiation - the planet dying - id rather not try to save it, just please bury me with it.

Interpretation #3 | Reviewer: Just Another | 9/22/09

I interpret this song as addressing the sentiment many people feel about the compounding problems facing humans and the world in the coming century.

Since most predictions don't state things as getting really horrible until around 2050, lots of folks are thinking, "Oh well, if things are going to get as bad as they say, we'll all be dead or decrepit anyways. Might as well enjoy the party while life is still good!

Just one more interpretation to add to the quiver.
Thanks!

i love this song, the rusted awkwardness fits the lyrics perfectly :)

just my 2 cents, it's about being attached to trivial bullshit, and letting that decelerate your life.

also, all you talking about emoes and indie music and mainstream music and all that are dickbutts.

Dont judge a book by its cover... | Reviewer: Mike | 1/10/08

I really agree that modest mouse is not emo, bofore this page i had never even heard that MM was concidered emo! I just thought of it as GREAT music! A few reviews before me, some one had also said it was more of a story not a song... Try listening to Depeche mode...Thats a story...

Modest mouse is good | Reviewer: Seth | 12/31/07

I just wanted to ask to all the people out there that don't like modest mouse, have you actually listened to a whole MM song? I used to absolutly hate modest mouse, but I never listen to a whole song by them. Then one day I actually did listen to them and now there one of my favorite bands, Hell I'm listening to Talking Shit About A Pretty Sunset right now. So just think about it, you might actually like them if you give them a listen to.

P.S: Modest Mouse is Indie not Emo, believe me there is a difference between the two genres.

Lets just say it's socially relevent. | Reviewer: Kurtis Repstock | 11/14/07

Lyrically, this song is making obvious allusions to the society we view ourselves in today. With the cult of celebrity, rampant materialism and greed, brainwashing with inane commercials and media, etc. There is a visual imagery in the lyrics to the ideas associated with conformity and a stagnation of the free flow of ideas (ie. "Good news for people who love bad news/
We've lost the plot and we just can't choose/
We are hummingbirds who are just not willing to move.")
