John Butler Trio Zebra Lyrics

Last updated: 06/28/2012 09:42:18 PM

I could be loud man, I could be silent
I could be young man or I could be old
I could be a gentleman, I could be violent
I could turn hot man or I could be cold
I could be just like the calm before the storm boy,
waiting for all hell yeah to break loose
I could be innocent or I could be guilty
Doesn't mean that I don't believe in no noose
So I'm singin'

I could be rich like a wandering Gypsy
I could be poor like a fat wallet lost
I could be first man or I could come last
It's not who breaks the ribbon boy it's how you get across
I could be red blue black and white sunset
Or darkest at day boy or brightest at night
I could be the sun boy I could be the moon
I'm made up from the stars boy I’m shining so bright

So I'm singin'

I could be asleep boy or I could be awake
I could be alive and I be the walking dead
I could be ignorant or I could be informed
I could lead my life man or I could be led
I could be anything I put my mind to boy
All I gotta do is give myself half a chance
I can bring love back into my life
And share it with the world if I got some balance

So I'm singin'

Who said this song is about nothing? It is obviously a self affirmation about how he can be anything. It makes some points like "it's not who breaks the ribbon, it's how you get across". And I think he's saying he can be successful or happy, but there are 100000 ways to do it!!

Beautiful song, yes he's politically aware and voices it. How do they make that sound with 3 ppl I will never know!

A terrific song, and if that's the only one you know by JBT, please open up your minds and find some new stuff - the messages are amazing all the way through. Some of my favourites are Peaches & Cream, Groovin' Slowly, and Used to Get High.

To correct nozar, and one of the Anonymous posts, this song is definitely not reggae. It doesn't follow reggae flow, the beat is quite definitely not reggae, and the instrumentation is lacking for it to fit into the reggae category. They do play a few reggae tunes, and the topics that Butler writes about are very much akin to the Rastafari ethos, but this is not a reggae song, and they are probably closer to modern bluegrass, or even funk, than they are to reggae. I would classify them as Jam Band, meaning that they don't really fit any particular genre, blending a whole lot of amazing influences.

Don't forget to buy the album - support the artists that you love!!!!!
