Your Heart Is An Empty Room Lyrics - Death Cab For Cutie
Review The Song (35)
Burn it down till the embers smoke on the ground
And start new when your heart is an empty room
With walls of the deepest blue
Home's face: how it ages when you're away
Spring blooms and you find the love that's true
But you don't know what now to do
Cause the chase is all you know
And she stopped running months ago
And all you see is where else you could be When you're at home
And out on the street Are so many possibilities to not be alone
The flames and smoke climbed out of every window
And disappeared with everything that you held dear <----------
But you shed not a single tear for the things that you didn't need
Cause you knew you were finally free
Cause all you see is where else you could be, When you're at home
Out on the street are so many possibilities to not be alone
And all you see is where else you could be,
when you're at home,
There on the street,
are so many possibilities to not be alone

such an amazing song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/17/14
This is a beautiful song that I love so much. To me it is about letting go of your past so you can leave and"burn" all the bad parts but along with the embers was everything you held dear. And you gave up everything and found a love that is true, but there is still an emptiness because all you see is everything else. So it's like you wish you could just go back to the beginning because the chase or whatever you did to get wear you are is all you know. So it's like some person who is stuck in a vicious circle of erasing everything and just running away because of their discontentment. The idea KINDA reminds me of the music video for the song only exception by paramore because she is so used to leaving and never coming back while in love. But in the end of that song a new love is the only exception to her habit. This song ends on a less lighter note but is probably more realistic in many more situations. :)
The empty room is your nirvana | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/11/13
When your heart is empty, it means you don’t have more desires, that’s why the empty room is beautifully blue, and its until then when you can finally feel and live completely, it’s like your nirvana.
Even if on your past you weren't able to appreciate love because you were running, now that you let everything go on the metaphorical fire without shedding a tear, you feel free and have a new strength to look outside for the things that you are meant to discover.

As horrible I feel admitting this aloud I truly feel that this song was written for me. Ive listened to it so many times and cant see how I never really listened to it.
This song is about a man who is never happy or even truly content with what he has so he always looking. He looks at relationships like a ship passing in the night. As much as he wants to be that man he is either incapable or scared to truly commit. He intentionally sabotages relationships "burn it down till the embers smoke on the ground". And once it's done he just walks away because he took what he wanted and left the rest. And seeing that his "heart is an empty room" its easy to just pick up and start all over again as he has very little/no real emotions at all. And not he has finally found what he thinks is real love but he's been running around for such a considerable amount of time he doesnt understand the dynamic of a real partnership. Obvisouly everyone will get something different out of this but being a guy like this it stuck to my insides like glue. That being said it's time to make some majour changes.
Dont think most people get it | Reviewer: AMy | 6/20/12
he says "heart is an empty room" sure. But next comes "with walls of the deepest blue"...An empty room isn't empty with 'deep blue walls'. men seem to get "ruined" by a woman early in life...At least thats my experience. So they can try to start over but even the "empty room" ..or "clean slate" heart isnt really 'clean". He can say empty room buit walls of deep blue lead us to believe there is something in the room...some depression.
My view of this song. | Reviewer: Justine | 1/10/12
I feel this songs tells... "the chase is all you know" He has been chasing this girl..But now that she has stopped and committed to him... "you found out the love is true..but you dont know what now to do" He no longer yearns for anything..or her... Now that he has her.. He doesnt know what he wants. His heart is an empty room.
Just stop. | Reviewer: Brandon | 8/17/11
I did not read every review here and no, it doesn't matter what you think this song means as long as you get something from it, however, it really is simple.
He loved chasing the girl. It's fun, we all like to do it.
After she submitted (not running anymore), he got bored.
He saw every other possibility on the street.
Simple as that.
Honestly, if you wanna get technical, which I'm sure they didn't mean it to be this way, this could be a nice testament to the research done in the Evolutionary Psychology field with particular attention paid to monogamy and how we as humans are bad at it. We are serial monogomists, moving from one relationship to the next. All in the name of sex or a better opportunity. But then again, I'm sure he didn't mean for someone to get that out of it.
Overthinking it | Reviewer: Charlie | 6/18/11
I think you guys are all way over thinking this. it might mean these things to you,
but it feels to me that the chase is him chasing a girl, its all hes known because he did it for so long, but she either died, or stopped talking to him, so it ended.
and the chorus, is just him discussing the aftermath, him being alone every night, wishing he was out with friends, or partying.
the whole part about burning down the house, with an empty room, is him only trying to forget everything.
but yeah. thats just me though.

Well, this song means a lot. This is about a man who always love to travel until he find his woman, his true love but he doesn't know how to handle such relationship, how to make them grow.So he just choose not to be with the woman he love because he is afraid of hurting her. For him leaving her is the best way. Until the one he love passed away. So he decided to return traveling again searching for happiness.
People | Reviewer: simon | 7/18/10
He finally found a woman to love and to live with but is still lookin for what he doesnt need because the chase (the excitement) has passed. His heart is painted in blue because this is the coldest color, his heart is empty because he doesnt care about her feelings when he sleeps at other houses and with other people, he doesnt regret because he feels free. He sucks :(
Cause all you see is where else you could be | Reviewer: daniel | 2/8/10
"Burn it down till the embers smoke on the ground" ; his relationship has just gone to the ground, he starts off fresh being single "with walls of the deepest blue"
he finds love but he doesnt know how he fits into a long-term relationship
the chorus means the exact feeling it describes, he doesnt like where he is, he feels uneasy with committment "And all you see is where else you could be"; when i first heard this song, i felt a strong feeling of displacement, wishing i was somewhere far off
the second fire is the the burning down of his relationship. but this time, it sets him free
his heart will always be an empty room (as he will never accept this feeling of being at home, wishing he was somewhere else)
What it means to me | Reviewer: Philip | 12/31/09
To me, "Your Heart is an Empty Room" speaks about having the person that you love alongside the irrational desire for those you don't have. But I believe it's about the transition out of this mindset.
Look at the song as if both of the passages about the burning are happening (chronologically) after the chorus and the the passage starting "home's face." "All you see is where else you could be when you're at home..." "home" is where you want to be, the relationship he's in with the girl he loves, but he can't seem to wrap his mind around the fact that it's truly all he wants even though he knows it. The burning of "it" is the point of realization. "The things that you didn't need" are everything that you thought you wanted because you didn't have them. In this case, other romantic interests.
Lots of meanings. This is just what it means for me.
loner | Reviewer: loner | 12/13/09
he's writing about a loner
someone who sits at home and wishes that he could be with someone but hes too afraid to do it
he likes someone and she might him - if he wasnt so afraid - he doesnt know what to do
he has been burnt from other relationships and is afraid to go thru it again.
the only thing he does is sit at home and think about what his life could be - if he only just went out there - out of his comfort zone and did something about it - there r so many possiblilites not to be alone
he doesnt want to be alone - but he is - and hes afraid to fall in love again
but if he realizes that things happen for a reason - the flames of the past r burnt and gone - and just maybe instead of losing something that u thought u needed for so long - its absence has set u free
free to find someone else - u just have to go out and find it and not sit at home alone and think about it - u have to do it
The Empty Room | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/7/09
I think the title of this song holds most of its meaning. To me, the empty room is an empty space in this person's heart. It seems like he is in a long distance relationship with a girl he loves but its so hard for him to feel connected to her when he is away, which is often. This song is about him wondering if he should look for another relationship with all the other possibilities "on the streets" around him. The empty space in his heart is not being fulfilled since he cannot always be with the one he loves, and it distracts him from his relationship.
freedom to choose loneliness | Reviewer: jar | 6/23/09
I've always felt somewhat sad for the person whose heart is an empty room. It seems as though the song is almost vindictive and yet tender with this empty-room-heart person.
The narrator/the voice speaks to a guy who has always been in love with this girl, possibly chasing her for a long time, and maybe more often than not he has been away from home. when he returns everything has changed. the girl stopped running, he thinks he loves her and his love for her is true but he has no way of re conciliating that with his wanderlust and his inability to commit.
in theory, or in his mind, love is true. but in practice, or when loving comes down to not just missing someone but settling down/sacrificing for that someone, doing concrete things to build a real relationship, the guy in this story is at a loss what to do, because he'd rather be travelling/ be a free spirit. he has no idea how to settle down with just one person. he's always thinking of how there are the myriad other romantic encounters out there on the street.
so many possibilities to not be alone, but they still dont take away the emptiness and loneliness that is his heart.
so yes, he chooses to be free in the end, and he starts anew with an empty room -- the song starts with his decision to leave home again and continue being the lonely, free person that he is.
"Cause all you see is where else you could be, When you're at home
Out on the street are so many possibilities to not be alone
And all you see is where else you could be,
when you're at home"
it's sad, because that's all he sees. and so though he chooses freedom for himself he's still bound by the ironically narrow vision of what he sees: where else he could be, instead of where he already is.
in a way, he'll never be able to fill that empty void, because he can never recognize where he is and what he is living for; only where else he could possibly be.
a really tragic existentialist trap.
Interessante. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/8/09
Hmmm. This sounds like someone with a personal problem.
First, it seems that someone was previously in love and for whatever reason, that ended and they want to start anew and forget everything. "And start new when your heart is an empty room
With walls of the deepest blue"
Seasons come and go and one finds love they believe is real. "Spring blooms and you find the love that's true".
But this hardly lasts long. To me, it seems that the 'love' he found was amazing for a while (when he was "chasing" her), but then once she gave him her all, he didn't know what else to do. There was no reason for her to continue "running" and nothing for him to keep chasing her for.
When the person is at home and lax with things to do, they can only think of other seemingly interesting things to do than sit at home. And then a person could look outside and imagine all the different sorts of people they could be with JUST to not be alone. To get rid of the lonely feeling inside them.
The memories and past emotions that a person once treasured disappear and they don't mind. It's a healthy part of moving on to bigger and better things.
The person doesn't cry or reflect over the things they are throwing away. They realize it wasn't worth it. They were finally free from an attachment to nothingness.
