Review The Song (1)Print the Lyrics

Wasted disposable dying scum
Two months tops before silence replaces your small beating drum
Isn't that what we're all waiting for
So we can go home and celebrate our good life

But I feel gun powder
Burning under my skin
Don't say another word
You might set off a spark
Cause i've got gun powder
Burning under my skin

Take me back to tv-land
Numbness is a safe zone
They never trained me for reality
I'm a reality-tv clone
Now did you say your 10 going on 11?
Something is terribly wrong
Somehow I'm dying with you

But I feel gun powder
Burning under my skin
Don't say another word
You might set off a spark
Cause I've got gun powder
Burning under my skin

Yamkela

Review about Yamkela

Yamkela, the meaning of the song | Reviewer: Ephraim | 8/2/2007

The vocalist of Blindside went on a missions trip to Africa, of which he encountered a boy, named Yamkela. This boy was stricken with AIDS, the deadly immunodeficiency virus. The boy was told he would live no longer than 2 months. (two months tops, before silence replaces your small beating drum) Christian (vocalist of Blindside) knew the boy as a friend, and after he left to return to America, the boy died. Later, Christian wrote Yamkela, the song as a tribute to the boy he met on his missions trip.

"Wasted, disposable dying scum...
...isn't that what we're waiting for,
so we can go on and celebrate good life,"

This section of the lyrics from Yamkela state that the wealthy and fortunate parts of the world see people like the boy Yamkela as just wasted and worthless. "so we can go on and celebrate good life," This section states that we are careless for those in these kinds of places, facing disease and famine, homelessness and misery. We simply enjoy our good life, and most of us do nothing about what others are facing.

"...but I feel,
gun powder, burning under my skin
don't say another word,
you might set off a spark,"

This section of the lyrics, starting with "but I feel, gun powder, burning under my skin," means that Christian feels the pain and misery that the boy Yamkela was experiencing, and felt sympathy for him, which is why he, I am assuming, led the boy to loving the Lord. I am also assuming that Christian asked what being stricken with AIDS feels like, and Yamkela responded with, 'gun powder, burning under my skin.' I am also assuming that "don't say another word, you might set off a spark," was from the risk from even speaking with people that Yamkela must have had, knowing he might catch a cold from them, and set off the spark of his disease.

I am not sure what the rest of the song means, as in verse two, of which "take me back to TV land, numbness is a safe zone, never trained me for reality, I'm the reality TV clone," however I am attempting to deconstruct the song more to find its true meaning.

Thanks for reading, and remember what kind of effect Blindside intended their music to have.
