Sting & Police Wrapped Around Your Finger Lyrics

Last updated: 05/25/2013 12:00:04 AM

You consider me the young apprentice
Caught between the Scylla and Charybdis
Hypnotized by you if I should linger
Staring at the ring around your finger

I have only come here seeking knowledge
Things they would not teach me of in college
I can see the destiny you sold
Turned into a shining band of gold

I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger

Mephistopheles is not your name
I know what you're up to just the same
I will listen hard to your 'tuition
You will see it come to its fruition

I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger

Devil and the deep blue sea behind me
Vanish in the air you'll never find me
I will turn your flesh to alabaster
When you will find your servant is your master

Ohhh, you'll be wrapped around my finger
You'll be wrapped around my finger
You'll be wrapped around my finger

The servant will be | Reviewer: Equeslover | 5/23/13

This is about the price one pays to the music industry...I think maybe STing Got in and then was getting out..I hope so...the servant now the master...and no longer controlled by...well you know who...

It's rich enough in meaning if you just take it at face value | Reviewer: Red Bill | 1/13/12

The song is about two wizards, or practitioners of some dark magical art. The position of an apprentice, in history, was not much above that of a slave. It is not surprising that a sufficiently talented pupil would ascend in the power struggle to become a threat to the master.

It is ok to say that the story * reminds * you of the power struggles that occur in a highly-charged sexual relationship, or in world politics. But there is nothing in the song that indicated directly that it is an allegory or intended to be interpreted as a metaphor.

Our Higher Selves | Reviewer: Mellie | 11/28/11

This is essentially a musing from our higher self(ves). Essentially, you can be the master of your mind or be mastered by your mind. It's up to you. "I'll be wrapped around your finger" means your mind will be your servant. "You'll be wrapped around my finger" means you will be your mind's servant. "I will listen hard to your tuition" is our mind listening to what we desire to be/do/have. "You will see it come to its fruition" is the realization of your dream, whether you dreamed it intentionally or not.

Reading too deep | Reviewer: Dirk | 11/9/11

Look at the words and it is a younger man going after an older, married woman. She is a cougar and he is young and wants to learn how to please a woman. She thinks she is seducing him but in the end(; he was a great lover. She came back wanting more.
I will turn your face to alabaster
When you will find your servant is your master
It appears he came on her face with this line. Interesting. It all ends up with sex

drugs | Reviewer: doug | 10/2/11

I interpret this song as a reference to drugs. the apprentice is DRUGS personified. the master is dabbling, not respecting the in "you consider me the young apprentice". the line "things they would not teach me of in college" implies a dark art...aka drugs. the "destiny sold" is the masters own destiny, a future forever altered by the drugs. "vanish in the air" means that he has lost the ability to control the drug until finally the drug has overpowered him, thus he is wrapped around its finger

Being Trapped | Reviewer: Goddess_Enigma | 12/22/10

The devil is getting into a relationship, the old "ball and chain"...if you consider the source of the lyrics.

The ring around her finger is the one he will potentially be putting there himself. When he commits himself to her, he is stuck with her, and the insecurity of that is like the devil playing tricks on you and leading you to your doom through his agent.

Apparently his biggest fear never materialized because last I read he is still happily with the woman who has (how many?) eight(?) of his children?

Mephistopheles | Reviewer: Ca Basque | 3/4/10

Mephistopheles is already trapped in his own hell by serving the Devil. He warns Faustus of the choice he is making by “selling his soul” to the Devil: “Mephistophilis, an agent of Lucifer, appears and at first advises Faust not to forgo the promise of heaven to pursue his goals".

Are you people high? | Reviewer: allanxxx | 11/25/09

What if the 'F' is wrong with you people? I feel like I walked into a retard convention. Have you ever even read about the characters he's mentioning? Jesus Christ man. This song is about his love for a married woman. Why do you think he mentions Mephistopheles? Mephistopheles signed away his soul, much like what a RING symbolizes. I do believe he even says "STARING AT THE -RING AROUND YOUR FINGER-". Are you all so desperate to convince those around you that you're a deep thinker? Well, is so, START READING!! What do you think "hypnotized by you if I should linger' means? And at the end, HE becomes HER master, because SHE is now wrapped around HIS finger, implying he's wearing her ring. Godd**n, you people need to learn how to f**king read and comprehend basic information. All he's doing is combining personal experience with mythology here. READ A F**KING BOOK MAN!!!!

politics of puppetry | Reviewer: Jake | 8/1/09

Hmmm... well, You can't become President of the USA if you are an athiest. It just would not happen. US presidents must uphold christian values or they will not get elected. The christian churches wear many rings.

Israel, are they a western nation. I think they want to be.

best Police lyrics... not so sure... if you want subtle simplicity 'do do do the da da da is all I have to say to you'

'Poets, Priests and Politicians have words to thank for their positions.'

Wow | Reviewer: Ben | 4/18/09

To the Anonymous reviewer on 2/09/09:

Name one government in the Western world that is controlled by religion... name just *one*.

I understand that you're entitled to your opinion, but if you're gonna come off as providing "enlightenment," the least you could do is offer evidence, not your warped perception of life. Do yourself a favor and quit drinking the Kool-Aid the liberal media is drowning you with (read about it)... learn the truth and then formulate an opinion based on facts, not ideology.

As for the song: One of the Top 10 ever made... I think we can at least agree on that.

Enlightenment in his words.. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/9/09

The master in the beginning (religion and the governments they control), a young apprentice [seemingly] there to learn the masters ways and how they hold society hostage with unreal hopes and fears [i.e.- the hope of heaven after death and the fear of the devil as a way to scare them straight].. then once the apprentice has learned the masters ways, he now has become the master relaying he will no longer be kept hostage to this fear of the devil [it is behind him] and the former master has control no longer. Now the former master(s) are wrapped around his finger.

Just like the Knights Templar had the Catholic Church wrapped around their finger in centuries passed. (read about it)

Simply the best | Reviewer: SoundBored | 10/10/08

This is, hands down, the best song by the Police. Sure, most people would disagree but the music and especially the verse carry a powerful message and are expertly executed. I never get tired of hearing it....even after all these years.

Minor correction | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/28/07

A quick correction, not to the lyrics, but to the comment below: We use significantly more than 10% of our brains. That we don't is a myth perpetuated from an age of little scientific understanding, to justify extravagant claims made by various hoaxsters. Do a little research and the truth of the matter will jump out quite willingly.

"all the best bands are affiliated with Satan" - B. Simpson, BKE

"big ups" to "the police" and probably Sting specifically for leaving hints and clues about the underhanded way "some folks" use music for good ole fashion mind control. I applaud honesty and sincerity especially when it comes from "the man", aka, the "Shire Reive" aka Polis Awe-Thor-Ree-Tah-orians. Long story short, "wrapped around your finger" like "every breath you take" and the phychological phenomena of "Synchronisity" are refering to mind control, (you see it turns out the "90%" of the human mind "we don't use" is used by others! This external control, it runs out is used by... um... others to control us, sometimes for our own good and sometimes for slavery or worse. Sting, I believe is more "in the know" about this sort of thing and consequently touches on it in this song and many many others. "The details" of who, what, how, when, where of this rant are as they say "esoteric", so I won't devuldge anything more as that is why we are ALL here, to find this stuff out on our own. BUT I would just like to thank Sting for leaving glaring abvious hints about what "tradition" the author of the song is refering to, I know... do YOU? (remember in the movie stripes when the black guy shakes his hands at Pvt. Francis Sawyer and goes "OoooohhhHHHHoooo"? I'm doing that at you the reader in jest, so don't put me on "your list").
