Word On A Wing Lyrics - David Bowie

Review The Song (6)

In this age of grand illusion you walked into my life out of my dreams
I don't need another change, still you forced away into my scheme of things
You say we're growing, growing heart and soul
In this age of grand illusion you walked into my life out of my dreams
Sweet name, you're born once again for me
Sweet name, you're born once again for me
Oh sweet name, I call you again, you're born once again for me
Just because I believe don't mean I don't think as well
Don't have to question everything in heaven or hell

Lord, I kneel and offer you my word on a wing
And I'm trying hard to fit among your scheme of things
It's safer than a strange land, but I still care for myself
And I don't stand in my own light
Lord, lord, my prayer flies like a word on a wing
My prayer flies like a word on a wing
Does my prayer fit in with your scheme of things?

In this age of grand illusion you walked into my life out of my dreams
Sweet name, you're born once again for me
just as long as I can see, I'll never stop this vision flowing
I look twice and you're still glowing
Just as long as I can walk
I'll walk beside you, I'm alive in you
Sweet name, you're born once again for me
And I'm ready to shape the scheme of things

Ooh, ready to shape the scheme of things
Ooh, ready to shape the scheme of things
Ooh, ready to shape the scheme of things
Ooh, ready to shape the scheme of things
Ooh, ready to shape the scheme of things
Ooh...

Lord, I kneel and offer you my word on a wing
And I'm trying hard to fit among your scheme of things
It's safer than a strange land, but I still care for myself
And I don't stand in my own light
Lord, lord, my prayer flies like a word on a wing
And I'm trying hard to fit among your scheme of things
It's safer than a strange land, but I still care for myself
And I don't stand in my own light
Lord, lord, my prayer flies like a word on a wing
My prayer flies like a word on a wing
Does my prayer fit in with your scheme of things?

Bowie's Theologically Neutral/Agnostic Take On Religion | Reviewer: St Julian | 8/15/12

Of course the Nicene Christian creed would try and claim this song as their own, and Bowie as convert, but, its all actually very agnostic in its sentiment. Bowie dabbled with everything in his search for meaning. This song is either a prayer for help or similarly some confirmation from above that he was on the right track spiritually.

Best agnostic hymn ever written.

Masterpiece | Reviewer: Jeremy Walker | 3/6/12

As a Bowie fan since 1973 I have to say this is my favourite all-time song. It just gets better with every listening, even after 36 years. It is like a drug. No matter how well prepared you are to receive it, as Golden Years comes to a close, you cannot believe how good it will be. Again, again and again.

Why I love "Word on a Wing" | Reviewer: Bill Hope | 8/7/11

As a Christian I'm just amazed how God works through the words of a poet no matter if it's secular or Christian music. I've always adored David Bowie's music and I always tell people that if someone would really want to get "Christian" Rock right they need to listen to "Word On a Wing" because there's no better song to convey how someone feels about God and Christ than this song. Following Christ shouldn't be converting to a religion but having a heart felt relationship to Him.

Someone fetch a priest | Reviewer: jo | 3/11/09

This is Bowie's short religious moment. During the filming of of The Man Who Fell To Earth, Bowie was having a rough time psychologically with this things happening on the set, which was keeping him up at night. So he found Jesus and Christianity for a while, and the result was Word on a Wing. That was also the time when he started carrying a silver crucifix, which he still carries to this very day (2009), even though he's not a religious kind of guy.

A Sweet Caress From Bowie | Reviewer: Montana | 10/20/07

This song by the Great Man Himself has the power to enclose you in a warm soft embrace... Gently carassing the parts of your being that sometimes needs to be touched....!!!

Lurve it!!! Bowie in purity... Bowie at his best!!!
