Windowsill Lyrics - The Arcade Fire

Review The Song (7)

I Don't wanna hear the noises on TV
I Don't want the salesmen coming after me
I Don't wanna live in my father's house no more
I Don't want it faster, I don't want it free
I Don't wanna show you what they done to me
I Don't wanna live in my father's house no more
I Don't wanna choose black or blue
I Don't wanna see what they done to you
I Don't wanna live in my father's house no more

Because the tide is high
And it's rising still
And I don't wanna see it at my windowsill

I Don't wanna give 'em my name and address
I Don't wanna see what happens next
I Don't wanna live in my father's house no more
I Don't wanna live with my father's debt
sponsored links
You can't forgive what you can't forget
I Don't wanna live in my father's house no more
I Don't wanna fight in a holy war
I Don't want the salesmen knocking at my door
I don't wanna live in America no more

Because the tide is high
And it's rising still
And I don't wanna see it at my windowsill
I don't wanna see it at my windowsill
I don't wanna see it at my windowsill
I don't wanna see it at my windowsill

MTV, what have you done to me?
Save my soul, set me free!
Set me free! What have you done to me?
I can't breathe! I can't see!
World War III, when are you coming for me?
Been kicking up sparks, we set the flames free
The windows are locked now so what'll it be?
A house on fire or a rising sea?

Why is the night so still?
Why did I take the pill?
Because I don't wanna see it at my windowsill

I Don't wanna see it at my windowsill
I Don't wanna see it at my windowsill
I Don't wanna see it at my windowsill

The song has strong ties to the german expressionism ideas of the father son conflict in literature. Plays such as "The Son" depict a generation that rises after the end of WW2 and rejects the old germany ideals of country. The new generation seeks to overcome the warlike methods of their fathers generation and to create a more peaceful and intellectual society that has no need for vicious acts against humanity. Arcade Fire is relating this to todays American Society and how corrupt and out of touch we have all become to the true realities of life. Windowsill is a powerful song that creates a very deep sense of hopelessness in todays society, and calls on the current generation to change it before its too late.

Fantastic | Reviewer: Ryan | 3/17/09

Arcade Fire is a brialliant band full of brilliant songs, and this is one example. It truly cuts to America's need for instant gratification and it perfectly shows what is happening to America right now. That is why it is a joke when adults say to my generation "Why is your generation so messed up?" We have done well with what we have been given, which certainly isnt much, and this particular song cuts to exactly what it is that we were given.

Watch American Television around 12 a.m. | Reviewer: Dav | 3/25/08

And then take an overview of the american consumer/pop culture.....apply it to a society led blindly by such things and then take on the perspective of a man/woman who knows better watching these events unfold... and they no longer want to be a part of a society where you can enchance your genitals, make a million in a day, and save yourself from an eternity in hell and get a heads up on the coming apocalypse for the low low price of $19.99. "Then I think you may understand the meanign of this song a little better"

Amazing! | Reviewer: Jake | 2/28/08

This isn't about a girl wanting to run away. What has MTV done to you? It's about how sick he is of American culture, American greed, and American imperialism and self rightousness. He doesn't want to live in this world being passed onto us in the younger generation. It's sick and it's twisted, and it's against all he wants to be and thinks the world should be. It's been awhile since I've heard a song that really strikes this much of a chord in me. A song that really sums up so much of what I feel and think about. I'm now one of Arcade Fire's biggest fans.

Great lyrics | Reviewer: Christian | 12/10/07

Love this song.

What I make of the lyrics of this song is somewhat of a hit to American consumerism. Win doesn't "want the salesman knocking at his door", he wants to break free from todays America. He uses MTV as an image on todays pop-culture in saying "MTV what have you done to me?".
Besides he makes a pessimistic remark conserning USA imperialism: "World war III when are you coming for me?"
Also, he mentions global warming "what will it be now... or a rising sea?"

All in all a great song raising quistions and publishing personal comments on todays western societies - putting it in everyone's faces how life can suck in America when you think about what heir we pass on to our children - "I don't wanna live in my father's house no more"

ummm... | Reviewer: james | 11/2/07

i havent heard Antichrist Televison Blues but this song isnt about a daughter that wants to run away from her father. it actually has nothing to do with a house or a father, its kindof all a big pun off of forefather. hes just saying america blows, and id like to get out now.

one question | Reviewer: nora | 10/2/07

only have one 'bad' thing to sat about this song;
if Antichrist Televison Blues (sung by Win) is about an abusive father singing to his daughter,..
and Windowsill is about the daughter who want to run away then why didnt Regine sing it??

other than that, this is jst another breathtaking song by the best band in the world :)
