Wild Cherry is an American funk/rock band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that achieved fame with its only hit, 1976's "Play That Funky Music." While the band is considered a one-hit wonder, the song remains a popular staple at clubs, with cover bands and on the dance floors at weddings and other parties.
Wild Cherry was formed in Pittsburgh in 1970, when singer Rob Parissi put together an outlet for his love of bands like the Yardbirds and fellow funk-rockers Sly and the Family Stone. The band performed locally around Pittsburgh, leading to a record deal with Brown Bag Records.
