Who did you think I was

I got half a smile and zero shame
I got a reflection with a different name
Got a brand new blues I can't explain
Who did you think I was

Every mornin when the day begins
I make up my mind but change it back again
I'm a shifter of the shape I'm in
Who did you think I was

You got my number but I always knew the score
Who did you think I was

Am I the one who plays the quiet songs
Is He the one who turns the ladies on
Will I keep shinin til my light is gone
Who did you think I was

You got my number but I always knew the score
Who did you think I was

Here is a line that you won't understand
I'm half of the boy but i'm twice the man
Carry the weight of the world in the palm of my hand
Who did you think I was

Review about Who Did You Think I Was

Great Song, Not Mayer's though... | Reviewer: Chris | 5/5/09

Although this is a great song, Mayer states in 'Where the Light Is' that this is originally a Hendrix composition that he re-arranged with Pino and Steve. I myself cannot find the original anywhere though...

Meaning | Reviewer: Justin | 2/9/09

I think this song was the beginning his transition to a blues rock style and not the mellow, radio songs he did before..

Got a brand new blues I can't explain

Am I the one who plays the quiet songs
Is He the one who turns the ladies on

Are all examples of this, then he upfrontly asks you who did you think he was, the quiet, mellow singer, but now he has a brand new blues

like all of us..... | Reviewer: docjon | 2/9/09

i do believe that john mayer is a one of a kind musician, he's up there with likes of john lennon, jimmy hendrix in terms of musical genius.....this song is far more complicated than you'll ever think it is, only john himself knows what this song is all about, well... you can run a thousand or more interpretations in just a single line of this song, its like encrypting the Bible or any ancient text, this is how deep john mayer is.... for that, he seethes thruogh your unconsciousness with his catchy hard to emulate melodies its like "tantra" you can get-off just by listenin to this song.... definitely not one song to mess around with... john mayer.... truly a musical genius!!!!

I agree with Danielle but would also add that this song was the first single released with the "John Mayer Trio". I think it addresses those who were weirded out by John's new sound because they were used to hearing his poppy songs he previously released. I feel he's telling the people who don't necessarily dig his "brand new blues he can't explain" not to typecast him into one genre because there are serveral different aspects to him as well as his music. It been said that John had to break into the industry with poppy songs to be accepted, get his name out and build some sort of a fanbase before he could concentrate on making the type of music he really wanted to make. It's almost as if he fooled the people ("You've got my number but I always knew the score")by using pop music to break into the industry, but the pop music isn't necessarily who he is ("Got a reflection with a different name"). So basically, just when you think you have John figured out he goes and changes it up on you by going bluesy and edgier then he forces you to realize you had him typecasted by asking you "Who did you think I was?".

This song is about his career, and about how much of himself can be wrought from his music. He's asking you, "Am I the one who plays the quiet songs/ Is he the one who turns the ladies on?" and I think the point of these questions is to prove to those who try to give answers that the answers aren’t theirs to give. This song is telling us how important it is to remember that really, fans DON'T know John Mayer: the person. That the only tiny, tangible access fans have to John Mayer: the person is through John Mayer: the musician, and that even then, definitions written for him as a musician can be overturned or debunked at the same rate that he can "make up [his] mind and change it back again." As far as his musical persuasion goes- he admits that he's got "a brand new blues that [he] can't explain" but more simply, that he's satisfied with the development and passionate to explore it. He says plainly that he's got "a reflection with a different name;" or an image to which he doesn't wholly identify with. A reflection that, because of the nature of his career, is under constant scrutiny- however extremely favorable or unfavorable the scrutiny happens to be that week. I think John Mayer: the person finds himself greatly removed from the activity surrounding his image, and is at times frustrated when the two meet. He challenges his listeners with the last verse of this song (and it’s not the first time he’s challenged us), giving us a line that we won’t understand to throw us off his track. The line is an example of something that may have exclusive meaning to him that we are just not privy to; the same way we shouldn’t be privy to which cute blonde he’s meeting for lunch, or what late night gig he’s playing in New York. And then, of course, the echoing prompt and title of the song, “who did you think I was?” which, I think, is more to get us thinking about how we’re thinking and about how far we should extend the notion of our thoughts. And he’s telling us as beautifully desperate and as powerfully stern as he can.

I love JMs throaty voice. Love the song, lyrics. I think it means he was with someone and they didn't want to understand "him" the way he was. The shape shifter means he's something new every day.
He is a cool dude. Love his lips.mmmmm
