Stand up straight
Do your trick
Turn on the stars, jupiter
shines so bright when you're around they tell us slow down,
We're too young you need to grow
The speed's the key
And they don't know who we are
[Chorus]
And who's to say that we're not good enough?
And who's to say that this is not our love?
Mother don't
tell me friends are the ones that I lose
'Cause they'd bleed
before you
but sometimes family are
the ones
you'd choose
It's too late now
I hold on to this life I found
[Chorus]
And who's to say we won't burn it out?
And who's to say we won't sink in doubt?
Who's to say that we won't fade to gray?
Who are they anyway,
anyway
they don't know
And you say we're too young, but maybe you're too old to remember
And I try to pretend but I just feel it when we're together
And if you don't believe me, you never really knew us
You never really knew
You and I
packin' up my room, we feel alright
But we're not welcome
soon
We'll be drivin'
'cause they don't know who we are
[Chorus]
Who's to say we won't stay together?
Who's to say we aren't getting stronger?
Who's to say I can't live without you?
Who are they anyway,
anyway
they don't know
And you say we're too young, but maybe you're too old to remember
And I try to pretend, but I just feel it when we're together
Who is to say?
And who is to say?
And who are they anyway?
Stand up boy,
I shine so bright when you're around

Honestly, to say you actually know what this songs means and all that jazz without seeing her live or reading her album, you can't honestly say you know what this song means.
It can mean anything, even the most bizarre planet theory.
However, it's unlikely.
And Melissa who saw this live, and if she heard the words coming out of Vanessa's own mouth, then I am pretty sure that's the truth.
For we cannot twist Vanessa's words for our own being. It is what is, so accept it.
Sometimes friends do stay forever, perhaps would be there more understanding and supportive than family. People make decisions in life, and sometimes it's family over friends. The traditional way. However, there are some of us who choose Friends over Family. It's taking a risk, but if you really believe in your heart that they will be there for you, then that's all on you, making your own choices and risks in life.
As for love and relationships...Independent choices with you and your significant other; going off and living together is a big risk to take, if you really truly love the person. And being in love, I honestly think it can happen anytime. It could start with infatuation, then childhood best friends, crushes to dating to relationships, long-term relationships, and then love. It takes time. However, you're never too young to love or be in love. That is my opinion, just don't go off and sleep with each other and get the other knocked up, that's not the way love should be, wait until you're able to care for yourselves and then if you are able for another person, then have a baby. (:
Anyway, you probably are all correct. And Melissa saw her live, so if it's love against the government, it's going to take more than just the government to defeat love. Gay lesbian love too. (:
This song is just inspiring and encouraging. I love it. (:

This song is dedicated to anyone who's ever been repressed by anyone, friends, family, government.
Vanessa even said that this song was one for all her gay fans.
It's about people telling you what you can and can't do, such as how some homophobic families cast out their gay children.
It's a pillar or strength to tell everyone that even when someone doesn't believe in you, you still have someone else who will somewhere in the world.
Even if it's 'Nessa. (Y)
She's incredible.

shes trying to tell us that her friends would sacrifice themselves b4 her mother would. and how you can choose your family by choose your friends as your family.
her mom prob tryed to tell her that her friends wont always be their in the end and they wont be your friends 4ever, but she knows that they are true friends and their bond is something that cant be broken

honestly i think youre all wrong. this has to do with the planets above us that we look at from either our windows in our rooms, our tv rooms or our kitchens. Duh!
"Do your trick
Turn on the stars, jupiter
shines so bright when you're around they tell us slow down"
i think it also has to do with the fact that our world is deteriorating. global warming, baby, global warming. Nessa is trying to prove to the government that they should act up and not stand there singing about relationships. Good job Nessa! Keep up your awesome chanting about da big G.W. All tha powah 2 u systah! XoXoXoXoXoX

to me its about young people who are in love and think their relationship can last forever, but others are telling them theyre too young to truly be in love or to know theyre going to spend forever together, but they know its real, they feel it when they're together and think everybody should keep their opinions to themselves because they arent the ones in the relationship

This is a great song, and so true! This is not only about a relationship, but also about taking risks, growing up, and not letting others make your decisions for you. This is one of my faves from Ness. I like it all- the music, the lyrics, her voice, everything! Great song Vanessa!
I saw her sing this live | Reviewer: Melissa | 11/11/07
I actually saw Vanessa perform this live, and before she sang the song, she said it's about a relationship that's not approved of by other people like your family or the GOVERNMENT! The crown went crazy when she said that, cuz she basically said it's for gay couples.
Amazing song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/25/07
Actually, when she performed this live, she said:
"I would like to dedicate this song to all of you out there who are in relationships that are not approved of by your parents or the government."
So, it's aimed towards the gay population and saying how it's unfair to say that their love isn't real.
This song is about a relationship that is disapproved of by her parents but instead of choosing to leave her love and make her parents happy she leaves with her boyfriend to live her life her way.
Mother don't tell me friends are the ones that I lose
'Cause they'd bleed before you
And sometimes family are the ones you'd choose
It's too late now
I hold on to this life I found
It means sometimes you'd choose family over friends, but in this case she is holding on to her new found relationship with a boy and not choosing her family memeber(s).
