While You Were Sleeping Lyrics
Performed by Casting CrownsReview The Song (24)
Oh little town of Bethlehem
Looks like another silent night
Above your deep and dreamless sleep
A giant star lights up the sky
And while you're lying in the dark
There shines an everlasting light
For the King has left His throne
And is sleeping in a manger tonight
Oh Bethlehem, what you have missed while you were sleeping
For God became a man
And stepped into your world today
Oh Bethlehem, you will go down in history
As a city with no room for its King
While you were sleeping
While you were sleeping
Oh little town of Jerusalem
Looks like another silent night
The Father gave His only Son
The Way, the Truth, the Life had come
But there was no room for Him in the world He came to save
Jerusalem, what you have missed while you were sleeping
The Savior of the world is dying on your cross today
Jerusalem, you will go down in history
As a city with no room for its King
While you were sleeping
While you were sleeping
United States of America
Looks like another silent night
As we're sung to sleep by philosophies
That save the trees and kill the children
And while we're lying in the dark
There's a shout heard 'cross the eastern sky
For the Bridegroom has returned
And has carried His bride away in the night
America, what will we miss while we are sleeping
Will Jesus come again
And leave us slumbering where we lay
America, will we go down in history
As a nation with no room for its King
Will we be sleeping
Will we be sleeping
United States of America
Looks like another silent night

Consider this... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/18/11
@keaton, I am neither supporting nor deflecting your views, but could I suggest that you read some of C.S. Lewis's works? Not the Chronicles of Narnia (although they're good books), but something more like his Surprised By Joy, or Mere Christianity...both are very good reads, and eye/mind openers.
wake up | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/1/11
keaton, i really hope and pray that before its to late your eyes will open to your spiritual blindness, the bible says the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing but for those who are saved it is the power of god, satan has got so many believing in lies and the deception that god isnt real but the fulfilling of bible prophecy proves otherwise and there is in fact to much evidence to deny jesus is real, he shed his blood for us so we could be freed from the bondage of sin and so we would not have to suffer eternally for the punishment he took for us that we deserve, he's coming soon whether u bellieve it or not, i pray the lord would reveal himself to u and u will see the truth let him in, youll never be the same.
Perspective | Reviewer: Keaton | 1/30/11
I just wanted to offer a different perspective. Yes, atheism is on the rise and has outnumbered religiosity in many countries, and will likely do the same in most other Western countries soon. But for those of you who are not yet atheist, I just want you to know that you can choose to not be religious. There isn't a god and you are allowed to decide for yourself, when you are old enough to avoid being punished by your parents for making up your own mind.
I find it strange to see these comments here talking about a god as if it were real and one day you too will find it strange.

The song points out similarities between the cultures of Judea and modern America. The common theme is that we're preoccupied with issues which seem important but cloud our vision of what God is trying to teach us. The environment is indeed important, but without humanity there won't be anyone around to enjoy it.
Beautiful! | Reviewer: Karen Nelson | 3/8/10
I heard this song for the first time just a week ago. It was so beautiful. Yes, we are worshiping the created not the creator. We need to see the crime we are committing by legalizing abortion and same sex marriages. Like one Christian speaker said we normalizing what God said in "God breathed" scripture, is an abomination.

I thought the song was great. We are America, so if there are some things that we need to improve on we have the power of prayer and the the power of our votes. If a politician is not living up to there promises, then we vote them out. We could criticize each other (America) or we can try to contribute in a positive way to make each other lives much better. No one has the exact date when Jesus was born, but we celebrate it December 25th. But WE SHOULD CELEBRATE HIS BIRTH AND HIS GIFT AND PROMISE OF A BETTER LIFE DAILY. THAT MEANS PEACE AND LOVE TO ALL EVERYDAY. Help and stand up for the weak, the poor, the orphans, etc. Love Truly Conquers All.

While... this is an amazing song. Am not an american - am a Zambian- living in Africa. it has made me to think about my faith! do i have room for my king? i wish all of us can create room for our King. God loves us.. he sent his only son to die for our sins.

As someone who is extremely pro-life, you will find the pro-life community is first in line to adopt the unwanted children. We have two adopted children that no one else wanted (8 & 13 when they came to be with us) and now have a 15 month old baby girl. You will find the pro-life community will go out of their way to do what is right. Read your paper and you will see that this administration's "green" policies will cause more suffering than good.

First, this country doesn't care about the environment. Look at the way we live our lives and the government's lack of effective legislation and that should become painfully clear. God made this earth for us and we're trashing it every day.
Second, abortion and environmentalism are two completely separate issues. These YaHoos connect the two either purely for effect or out of ignorance.
Before ranting against abortion ask yourselves this. How have you contributed to the life of an unwanted child? How many unwanted babies have you and yours adopted?
Awesome Song!!! | Reviewer: Heather | 12/18/09
I love this song!!! I have heard it many times but really didn't listen to the lyrics until the other day and was like WOW that is SO true about America. Why are we so worried about a tree or two when a human is being killed and nothing is done to save them. Abortion is Murder!
It Touched My Soul | Reviewer: Susan | 12/14/09
I recently heard this song at our Christmas program at our church as part of a "Night to Remember". This song touched the heart and soul of many who heard it, I was so blessed. Thanks to the writers of this song who had the courage to step out of the box and make a statment in such a beautiful way.

"Are they against preserving the natural world? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/16/09"
I don't think they're necessarily saying that the preservation of earth is bad, but America's neglect of aborted children and concern more with the environment is a cause of concern. Yes, the earth should be protected, but humanity is more of a priority to God because we are so loved by Him. It's more of a question pointed at our priorities, rather than the opinion that the environment doesn't matter...
PS-I love this song along with "I heard the Bells" by the 'Crowns!!!
Are they against preserving the natural world? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/16/09
There is much to like about this song but what's up with this incredibly right wing line? While I support them in their position about abortion I also fully believe in our need to protect God's creation. Do they really think saving the natural world is CONTRARY to God's will??
Refreshing | Reviewer: Larissa | 1/5/09
I was so glad to hear this song among the other "Christmas" music playing on the radio that talked more about Santa and lights than on the wonderful birth of Jesus Christ. It's becoming rare to hear such bold and honest lyrics these days, and the part of about "saving the trees and killing the children" really put things in perspective. It was also nice to hear a song that mentions Jesus' return for His people...very awesome, inspiring, and thought-provoking song.
Christians It's Time To Wake Up!!! | Reviewer: Althea | 12/17/08
Finally a gospel group that gets it and will not pander to being politically correct! We are the body of Christ and we need to stand against the wiles of the adversary that is destroying this precious nation and country. It is full time for Christians to rise up and be bold about our Faith and stop mixing with all types of doctrine! When Christ comes back he will be asking each of us - "What did you do for my Kingdom" - my question is , What will our answer be?????
