Where Do The Children Play? Lyrics
Performed by Cat StevensReview The Song (4)
Well I think it's fine, building jumbo planes.
Or taking a ride on a cosmic train.
Switch on summer from a slot machine.
Yes, get what you want to if you want, 'cause you can get anything.
I know we've come a long way,
We're changing day to day,
so tell me, where do the children play?
Well you roll on roads over fresh green grass.
For your lorry loads pumping petrol gas.
And you make them long, and you make them tough.
But they just go on and on, and it seems that you can't get off.
Oh, I know we've come a long way,
We're changing day to day,
so tell me, where do the children play?
Well you've cracked the sky, scrapers fill the air.
But will you keep on building higher
'til there's no more room up there?
Will you make us laugh, will you make us cry?
Will you tell us when to live, will you tell us when to die?
I know we've come a long way,
We're changing day to day,
But tell me, where do the children play?

Perspective | Reviewer: Wanda Mundy | 10/21/10
This song was written in the early 70s by 22-yr-old Cat Stevens. We were on a headlong rush, then, to build higher, dig deeper, and mostly - consume more. It is now 40 years later, and the composer of "Where Do The Children Play ?" is now 62 yrs old. He could see, then, what was happening. What - if anything - has changed for the better ?
Life is not that complex-we make it that way | Reviewer: rsimons | 7/23/10
This song points out how we must get back to the important things in life-raising our children to appreciate the everyday simple things in life-they are the things that matter in the sum of our existence. They are the core of humanity.
Powerful | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/10/09
This song is so accurate in its description of modern society. We are focusing so much on making so many forms of digital entertainment and technology, that we are forgetting the simple pleasures of playing in the park or in a field.
