When The President Talks To God Lyrics - Bright Eyes

Review The Song (26)

When the president talks to God
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women's rights
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God suggest an oil hike
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Are the consonants all hard or soft?
Is he resolute all down the line?
Is every issue black or white?
Does what God say ever change his mind
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
Does he fake that drawl or merely nod?
Agree which convicts should be killed?
Where prisons should be built and filled?
Which voter fraud must be concealed
When the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God
I wonder which one plays the better cop
We should find some jobs. the ghetto's broke
No, they're lazy, George, I say we don't
Just give 'em more liquor stores and dirty coke
That's what God recommends

When the president talks to God
Do they drink near beer and go play golf
While they pick which countries to invade
Which Muslim souls still can be saved?
I guess god just calls a spade a spade
When the president talks to God

When the president talks to God
Does he ever think that maybe he's not?
That that voice is just inside his head
When he kneels next to the presidential bed
Does he ever smell his own bullshit
When the president talks to God?

I doubt it

I doubt it

Huh. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/23/11

I'm extremely conservative. Whoop dee do, who cares? This is a beautifully written song, as are all of Oberst's, and we all know it. Fuck the others who say otherwise. They don't know what they're talking about.

British Guy for the return of the empire | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/17/11

I've heard this song a thousand times. Not much to say about it, it's much closer to being literal than most of his other songs. Got to say I am finding reading these comments somewhat amusing. The right winged, and the damn right stupid who are commenting on this song with over zealous beliefs and over zealous Nationalism. Obrest is right in this song, he is not offending God he is critiquing the president. Why some of you cannot see that is beyond me. His observations present the whole problem with America today so obsessed with power control wealth, proving it's might in Countries it has little or no real reason to go to war with. Mind you our Tony Blair wasn't much better. Americans when will you realize it takes a real power to control the Earth; like Britain long live the empire :P

if you think this song is offensive you've obviously missed the point, and for that, i am sorry. maybe you feel uneasy about it because its true. regardless, its just a song, and im sure you can always find a trashy country song to make you feel better.

That was posted so long ago that i doubt you will read this but i hope you happen to at some point. ...
First of all, you don't put food on your table by standing up for "these idiots," you put food on your table by taking orders from the government and your military superiors. And you are trained and essentially more-or-less to-some-extent-or-another brainwashed into following your orders regardless of how right they may or may not be (as the last lines of your post illustrate). Understandable to a point-- we can't have every soldier going around doing as they see fit. But at least try to BE AWARE that you are trained to be this way. Of course, I suppose if one could be aware they're being brainwashed then it wouldn't be brainwashing.
Second: you said, "When Americans cant allow their kids outside to play in fear of them stepping on a landmine, then I may agree that the president needs to talk to GOD." This is an absurd statement. First, I don't think it's gotten to that point yet. But even if it HAD come to that point, the president doesn't just need to talk to God (i would prefer if he didn't at all actually, but that is not wrong in itself), he needs to try to use his brain and logic and reason to determine the best courses of action!! Religious or not, we CANNOT be comfortable having our country's leaders basing their decisions on what they [at least claim to] think God is telling them!
Look, I am not one of these typical liberals. I am liberal conservative moderate and uncertain all in one (depending on the issue, and usually the latter). I'm not saying that many of these liberals are not often oversimplifying the matter (or many matters, for that matter). But you are being the exact same, yet far more extreme, on the opposite end.
I'm glad you are brave, and determined, and disciplined. I'm sure you are far more than I ever could be. But be brave enough to consider that all of you indoctrination and convictions and firm beliefs... may not be as accurate as you think-- or even accurate at all. Few men and women are brave enough and strong enough to do this. Even fewer than who are brave enough to risk their lives fighting in war.
I challenge you, Sergeant, and I challenge everyone else. Think. Think about your ideas. Think about why you have them and how you got them. Think about the other side of the coin. Think about the details. Don't just believe. Think.

this song gives me faith in musicians again, at least musicians like conor oberst and the rest of the guys in bright eyes.

"if oberst and or any of the band where gay would that change your opinion of the message they where putting out?

if so i think this song and most of bright eyes work arn't aimed at right wing bigots like your self.. just an obesrvation."

you, whoever you are, i would like to give you a hug.
so rad, and so true.

i adore this song, no seriously, it just makes me go 'holy shit, thank you' every single time i hear it.

Heather Doesn't know what this song is about | Reviewer: Sam Lowe | 7/2/08

Seriously, read the lyrics.
GWB refers to speaking to God during prayer, seeking answers to what he should do.
This song is saying that all the stupid shit he does, it's not God telling him to do so, it's his own fault.
Seriously, you obviously havent even read the lyrics, because you are so far off on what this song is about.

This is crap | Reviewer: Heather | 4/24/08

This song is evil and disgusting. Whoever wrote it should be ashamed and take a hard look at themselves. God doesnt let the bad things in the world happen. Thats our own fault. That is everyones fault in this country. Dont blame god....blame the sin in your life....sin which we let in is to blame

Does he? | Reviewer: Steve | 3/30/08

That's the question. Does he (Bush) ever smell his own bullshit? I voted for him twice. How smart am I? I hate the choice of the lesser of two evils. We will always have evil. And the three assholes McCain Clinton and Obama are just as full of shit. Fuck them all. Just get us the fuck out of Iraq.

Oh, how brilliant! | Reviewer: Kate | 11/20/07

Like oh my god, it all makes sense now! Conor Oberst must have ment everything literally...and he's a faggot...yeah, Emmy Lou Harris would agree, wouldn't she? She'd totally say he's a faggot.
May I suggest that the people who have thier heads up their asses (Milt) realize that it's a bit of an exaggeration cause it's a fucking song. I don't know maybe Bush does sit around looking for muslim countries to invade. Bush and I aren't really that great of friends, so I don't know, personally. The lyrics are used with the same intent Dead Kennedyshad in "Kinky Sex Makes the World Go 'Round" but I'm sure Milt doesn't listen to DK cause if Bright Eyes offends him then Dk will make him shit himself.

i liked it... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/28/07

just wanted to comment on some of the reviews of when the president talked to god rather than the song its-self. i'd say fair enough to anyone who didn't like this song, all music is all a matter of opinion.. but at least argue your case

... i just enjoyed the way that reviewer: Milt shows the sort of person he is by calling connor oberst a "fucking faggot"..

if oberst and or any of the band where gay would that change your opinion of the message they where putting out?

if so i think this song and most of bright eyes work arn't aimed at right wing bigots like your self.. just an obesrvation..
