Please don't get me wrong
See I forgive you with a song
We'll call the Likely Lads
But if it's left to you
I know exactly what you'd do
With all the dreams we had
Cause blood runs thicker, oh
We're thick as thieves, you know
If it's important to you
It's important to me
I tried to make you see
But you don't wanna know
You don't want to know!
If you pipe all summer long
Then get forgiven in a song
Well that's a touch, my lad
They sold the rights to all the wrongs
And when they knew you'd give me songs
Welcome back, I sang
But blood runs thicker, oh
We're thick as thieves, you know
If that's important to you
It's important to me
I tried to make you see
But you don't wanna know
You don't want to know
Oh what became of the Likely Lads?
What became of the dreams we had?
Oh what became of forever?
Oh what became of forever, though?
But, we'll never know
Please don't get me wrong
See I forgive you in a song
We call the Likely Lads
We all bought the ones
We taught 'em all we wrote the songs
That's filled with dreams we have
But blood runs thicker, oh
We're thick as thieves, you know
If that's important to you
It's important to me
I tried to make you see
But you don't wanna know
You don't want to know!
Oh what became of the Likely Lads?
What became of the dreams we had?
Oh what became of forever?
Oh what became of forever?
We'll never know!
But blood runs thicker oh
we're as thick as theives you know
if that's important to you
yes it's important to me
I tried to make you see
but you don't want to know.
Oh what became of the Likely Lads?
What became of the dreams we had?
Oh what became of forever?
Oh what became of forever?
We'll never know!
The ideal girl in London from France
Came over and left me, she left me entranced
Now I have to get by once again on my own
Nothing but memories
So I remember your eyes their unique shade of brown
while these blue eyes of mine they stay closed
I kissed you goodbye on the end 109
choked as I watched the bus go
Choking in smoke in to your angelic soul
Choking and smoking myself in to a hole
Where the only way out is to sleep and to dream
And to cry out your name

Review about What Became Of The Likely Lads trancending art | Reviewer: jon shaw | 10/9/09
this is one of my favourite because it clearly is carl trying to make Pete stop the smack n crack,If you pipe all summer long
Then get forgiven in a song
Well that's a touch, my lad
They sold the rights to all the wrongs
And when they knew you'd give me songs
Welcome back, I sang , I know all about crack and herion addiction as I was there when this song came out and it really turned me back onto english 'indie' shame they split but to be fair I do think Pete is the better songwriter, Killamangiro and F*ck Forever both stan up to any of the Libertines songs
this song is brilliant, but it's so sad, just for the story behind it.
I also wanted to point out something to everyone here arguing about who wrote it.
From Peter's old forum posts, October 25th, 2003:
"Biggles walking round delirious still, singing a great new song, something about 'likely lads' or so."
Clearly Carl was the one who wrote it, considering Peter didn't even know what it was yet when Carl was walking around singing it.
Of course, that doesn't mean they didn't polish the lyrics together. I think it plainly tells both perspectives, I just thought I would show that bit of evidence to prevent future arguments.
One of the best bands of my generation. Garage indie revival and it was great because of how short the band lasted. how much they did in so little time beautiful. plus for the record this song was written by carl barat. just to let you know. a song about pete and carls amazing friendship love it
Who Cares? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/19/08
Rhys, Mise & Lee, I agree with you.
It's a wonderful inspirational song. Well t`is for me. Why argue over it? Who cares who wrote the lyrics or who think's what. It's an amazing song. Nuff said.
If you actually read the lyrics, then you would understand that it is a combination of both Pete and Carl. You see, at first Carl is adressing Pete with understanding and love; he is perhaps showing that forgiveness, no matter what form, is the ultimate form of friendship and love. Carl and Pete are so close, they both know what they need, and even sacrafice for eachother. It is true friendship. The thing is, the exist as a great force together, almost as a symbol of the generation; a movement. But if they are separate, this movement is not possible, and no one will ever know what can be accomplished by the two.
The thing is, that its not a one sided thing, when they say " I tired to make you see/ but you dont want to know", its both. Carl is trying to make pete see a life with out drugs, and with out the lifestyle that Pete chose; Pete is trying to justify his life style, it may be the better one for him. Both don't want to see the other side, which is why the two cant exist. This is the basis of the down fall between the two greats. Life is like this in general; people dont want to see the other side, other opinion, and it causes down fall, and wars. Even though I disagree with Pete's life style, I try not to judge, because I am not him, and therefore, I dont know the reasons behind it. To me, this song is about ignorance, and how ignorance can cause destruction.
The libertines are better than baby shambles or dirty pretty thing .. they dont match up
i understand why everything happend.. the drugs are powerfull i ve been their unfortunately... but they will never get back together.. so dont ask.. it is just silly
I miss these lads so much! | Reviewer: Natalie | 12/28/07
For the first time I heard the libertines I knew they would become my favorite band. I had the pleasure to see them playing, and it was incredible, carl and peter had an amazing chemistry, writing songs, singing them, playing them live... Perfect.
I miss the libertines, but, I think Im glad they once existed!
What became of the likely lads?! We´ll never know.....
