What A Good Boy Lyrics - Barenaked Ladies

Review The Song (4)

When I was born, they looked at me and said
what a good boy, what a smart boy, what a strong boy.
And when you were born, they looked at you and said,
what a good girl, what a smart girl, what a pretty girl.

We've got these chains that hang around our necks,
people want to strangle us with them before we take our first breath.
Afraid of change, afraid of staying the same,
when temptation calls, we just look away.

[Chorus]
This name is the hairshirt I wear,
and this hairshirt is woven from your brown hair.
This song is the cross that I bear,
bear it with me, bear with me, bear with me,
be with me tonight,
I know that it isn't right, but be with me tonight.

I go to school, I write exams,
sponsored links
if I pass, if I fail, if I drop out,
does anyone give a damn?
And if they do, they'll soon forget 'cause it won't take much for me
to show my life ain't over yet.
I wake up scared, I wake up strange.
I wake up wondering if anything in my life is ever going to change.
I wake up scared, I wake up strange
and everything around me stays the same.

[Chorus]

I couldn't tell you that I was wrong,
chickened out, grabbed a pen and paper, sat down and I wrote this song.
I couldn't tell you that you were right,
so instead I looked in the mirror,
watched TV, laid awake all night.

We've got these chains, hang 'round our necks,
people want to strangle us with them before we take our first breath.
Afraid of change, afraid of staying the same when temptation calls ...

[Chorus]

When I was born, they looked at me and said;
What a good boy, what a smart boy, what a strong boy.
And when you were born, they looked at you and said;
what a good girl, what a smart girl, what a pretty girl, hey

Hairshirt Frame of Mind | Reviewer: Jerry Buckley | 4/1/10

I've always looked at the hairshirt as a symbol of sort, of the weight of all the expectations that are piled upon us by our genetic mapping and our family. School and career expectations, etc...and the burden of making the decision to stay within those boundaries, or else reaching outisde into the wider, unknown rhelms of possibility.
Whatever the meaning it is one of my all time favorite songs, and still thrills me each time I hear it.

I think this song is about addiction. A hairshirt is actually a form of penence and made out of a rough animal fur with the hair side against the skin...very uncomfortable. "Woven from your brown hair" tells me someone else brought him to this point of addiction.

This song makes me cry when I hear it. It reminds me of our plight as teenagers. the pressures of school, the loneliness, and the need for something just beyond our reach.....I did'nt know then it never goes away.

I love the way BNL use the word "hairshirt" in this song. A hairshirt was used a long time ago to ensure the wrongdoer wouldn't forget his crimes. It's woven out of itchy material, so it's very uncomfortable. I think this song is about someone who made a decision, passed up something amazing and is now stuck in another situation he can't get out of. He is reminded of what he passed up... and even though it's not right, he still wants what he passed up. Very sad song.
