Wendell Gee Lyrics - R.E.M.

Review The Song (2)

(Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe)

That's when Wendell Gee takes a tug
Upon the string that held the line of trees
Behind the house he lived in
He was reared to give respect
But somewhere down the line he chose
To whistle as the wind blows
Whistle as the wind blows with me

He had a dream one night
That the tree had lost its middle
So he built a trunk of chicken wire
To try to hold it up
But the wire, the wire turned to lizard skin
And when he climbed inside
There wasn't even time to say
Goodbye to Wendell Gee

So whistle as the wind blows
Whistle as the wind blows with me

There wasn't even time to say
Goodbye to Wendell Gee
So whistle as the wind blows
Whistle as the wind blows with me
If the wind were colors
And if the air could speak
Then whistle as the wind blows
Whistle as the wind blows

I just listened to the song, Wendell Gee, for the first time in possibly years, trying out a set of new, noise cancelling headphones my wife gave me over the Christmas holidays.

I'd always known the song was about a boy taking his own life, but I don't know if made the reconnection to it after my own mother took her life a few years following my far more frequent listening to music like the kind R.E.M created regularly. I certainly hadn't listened to it in the ultra-personal environment that the headphones create and one of the byproducts of headphone input and even moreso, noise cancelling phones, is that it brings personal songs even closer to whatever it is that makes up your personal "core".

If you have the opportunity to re-experience the song with headphones - take the time and closely consider its theme.

By all means, employ other of REM's tunes to re-right your mood at the time, but consider the above for what it may be worth.

I listened to this song for the 1st time in years today. It made me cry, like it used to. I see it as a song about suicide-"takes a tug upon the string..." a noose. A beautiful song.
