We Are Nowhere And It's Now Lyrics - Bright Eyes

Review The Song (9)

If you hate the taste of wine
Why do you drink it 'til you're blind?
And if you swear that there's no truth and who cares
How come you say it like you're right?
Why are you scared to dream of god
When it's salvation that you want?
You see stars that clear have been dead for years
But the idea just lives on

In our wheels that roll around
As we move over the ground
And all day it seems we've been in between the past and future town

We are nowhere, and it's now
We are nowhere, and it's now
You took a ten-minute dream in the passengers seat
While the world it was flying by
I haven't been gone very long
sponsored links
But it feels like a lifetime

I've been sleeping so strange at night
Side effects they don't advertise
I've been sleeping so strange
With a head full of pesticide

I got no plans and too much time
I feel too restless to unwind
I'm always lost in thought
As I walk a block to my favourite neon sign
Where the waitress looks concerned
But she never says a word
Just turns the jukebox on
And we hum along
And I smile back at her

And my friend comes after work
When the features start to blur
She says these bars are filled with things that kill
By now you probably should have learned

Did you forget that yellow bird?
How could you forget your yellow bird?

She took a small silver wreathe and pinned it onto me
She said this one will bring you love
I don't know if it's true but I keep it for good luck

II'm pretty sure laura is his yellow bird... and that's her talking.. probably in his head the waitrss is some random girl he's just looking at in all of his songs he mentions being with some one while thinking about someone else most like laura..

I'm pretty sure the yellow bird is the same one he references in poison oak, and that seems to be someone who committed suicide. so. I'm not sure who that was but some people were suggesting it was his brother.

The title we are nowhere and it´s now is refering to how the present can not exist. We can see this as he refers to being between past and future towns.
The song is about being on the road and his struggle with the loneliness that it brings. He is concerned about the use of his time as he sees the world passing him by. He takes medication to try to cure the loneliness but the side effects end up being worse than the loneliness so in the end there is no cure except being with the people he cares about
In the end it shows how he would rather be with his friends as he is in the bar waiting for them however, by the time he gets there he is already intoxicated from the alcohol and cannot fully enjoy their company however, the bartender refers to bringing a yellow bird like one had stated about refering to a canary in a coal mine or someone to give him a warning that what he is doing is harming him and why would one not bring something or someone to alert them of something that would seriously injur or kill them.
The waitress represents the kind people of the world such as a nurse that presents a sign of love however he is unsure that love actually exist however badly he wants to which is why he keeps it.

The yellow bird to me is someone he loves, maybe the waitress? and she doesn't know he loves her. She's either absolutely clueless, or she doesn't feel the same way. He says: "She took a small silver wreathe and pinned it onto me
She said this one will bring you love
I don't know if it's true but I keep it for good luck." I think he's saying that she tells him that he will find love, and he wishes that it will be her; that she will love him back? I don't know if I'm making sense, but it all works out in my head. haha.

Yellow Bird. | Reviewer: someone | 12/17/10

I think it's talking about a canary, referencing to the phrase "canary in a coal mine". Essentially, he's getting deeper and deeper into his troubles and there's nothing to tell him when he's gone to far.

I think the yellow bird is meant not as a sign of hope. For me the yellow bird symbolizes not fully thinking things out ahead of time... "How could you forget your yellow bird?". Before one enters a mine they send in a yellow canary to assess danger.

I believe the meaning of this song is to convey the importance of rising above one's circumstances. Life is shitty, and pardon my expression, but, you can't just sit there and let it fuck you in the ass, ya know?? Unless you're into that kinda thing... Point being, here is a guy faced with the paradoxes of life. Believing with all his heart in the truth that there is no truth; wanting salvation, but not wanting God. He's obviously going through a rough time. However, he's passively succumbing to it instead of rising above his issues, which everyone goes through in their lifetime. The diction he uses throughout the song connote feelings of being lost, dazed, in a dream, etc. I don't know about anyone else but I know EXACTLY how that feels. You just want to drink until you forget everything and pass out. But along comes a friend who reminds him of the life he dreamed of; his "yellow bird". This represents the indescribable sense of joy in flying free. Saying fuck you to that which makes you feel trapped and caged in, and choosing freedom. This could be finding that one person to love who makes you feel alive. Or it could be flipping off your boss, peacing that 9-5 shit, living out of your car, and playing music on the streets (I've actually considered this). And though this song may sound depressing and hopeless, in the end it is saying... We are all settling for something right now. Choose freedom instead. We only have one life anyway. Live fully, and good luck.

Where to Begin ?
I guess this song is all about being afraid of interacting with the world. All of us should be able to act, but we're afraid to do so because... well, as far as I'm concern: what is done is done and there's no going back. And no matter how hard we try to put our instinct forward, we think too much and that's what make us so tiny in a big world.
By listening over and over this song, I learned to stop overthinking life and to start putting aside my basic principle in order to move on.
As for the neon sign, it's probably a way to undermine the bar where he goes every night, unable to make is life better than a drinker's one.
