Your mother came up to me,
She wanted answers only she should know,
Only she should know.
It wasn't easy to deal with the tears that rolled down her face.
I had no answers 'cause I didn't even know you.
But these words
They can't replace,
The life you,
The life you waste.
How could you paint this picture?
Was life as bad as it should seem, that there were no more options for you?
I can't explain how I feel.
I've been there many times before.
I've tasted the cold steel of my life crashing down before me.
But these words
They can't replace,
The life you,
The life you waste.
Did daddy not love you?
Or did he love you just too much?
Did he control you?
Did he live through you at your cost?
Did he leave no questions for you to answer on your own?
Well fuck them,
and fuck her,
and fuck him,
and fuck you,
for not having the strength in your heart to pull through.
I've had doubts,
I have failed,
I've fucked up,
I've had plans,
Doesn't mean I should take my life with my own hands.
But these words
They can't replace,
The life you,
The life you waste
But these words
They don't replace,
The life you,
The life you waste.

My Own Meaning | Reviewer: Heather | 9/20/08
i have listened to Staind for a few years now on and off. But the last couple of days have been really bad for me...I have had to face things and feelings that I have been trying to avoid. The lyrics from stanzas 5 and 6 really explain my feelings, but they are put into a different perspective than how they were originally ment to be put. but that is what music is right? everybody has their own interpretation...and this was mine in a very tiny nutshell...

2 and a half years ago my sister committed suicide. It was a hard time for all of us... She didn't leave a note and none of us realised she was this unhappy. This song reminds me of her in a strange way. I'm still angry at her for killing herself and not talking to us and this song reflects the emotion I feel. I just want to let everyone out there know that suicide is not the answer! It only hurts your friends and family, they are the ones that are left to clean up the pieces... So if you ever feel that way, before you act... Talk to someone.
Great song | Reviewer: amused | 10/14/07
This is a great song, written about a fan of Staind that killed himself. Aaron Lewis had this to say:
""Waste" is about a kid that killed himself and I guess was a big fan of Staind. His mother came to a show of ours and stood outside the bus crying kind of wanting me to come off the bus and talk to her and give her answers to all the questions she had when I didn't know the kid. It's kind of my reply to the completely uncomfortable situation that I was put into."

my friend had me listen to this song and even tho i was a big fan of Staind, i hadn't heard it. the lyrics just sorta stuck in my head and i'd have to say that this is probably Staind's best song cuz it's full of so much meaning.
awesome song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/6/07
amazing song, staind fans really dont know of this song, but it is great cuz you can relate yourself to the situations that aaron lewis and the gang sing about. more people should listen to this song and the others from the album "break the cycle". i give it a ten out of a ten
