Review The Song (108)Print the Lyrics
A warning sign,
I missed the good part then I realized,
I started looking and the bubble burst.
I started looking for excuses.

Come on in,
I've gotta tell you what a state I'm in,
I've gotta tell you in my loudest tones,
That I started looking for a warning sign.

When the truth is,
I miss you.
Yeah the truth is,
That I miss you so.

A warning sign,
You came back to haunt me and I realized
you were an island and I passed you by,
You were an island to discover.

Come on in,
I've gotta tell you what state I'm in,
I've gotta tell you in my loudest tones,
That I started looking for a warning sign.

When the truth is,
I miss you.
Yeah the truth is,
That I miss you so.

And I'm tired,
I should not have let you go.

So I crawl back into your open arms.
Yes, I crawl back into your open arms.
And I crawl back into your open arms.
Yes, I crawl back into your open arms...

deep...DEEP down inside...i miss him...and this song helps me realize that. I never admitted that I loved him...but he deeply loved me and now were broken up and things are going to be ALL FUCKED UP again with my promiscuity. I'm such a slut. i never deserved him. I hope we can be friends at least...i'll be devastated if we won't. I need him...and I hope one day I'll actually let that sink in.

It amazes me how many people open their hearts in anonimous sites like this one. I too love this song, but for its melody and wording, rather than the words themselves. The melody line at "looking" drops beautifully and surprisingly as it seems that is going to go out of tune, but it doesn't. The wording in "excuses" just works so well. What a craft. I have never left anybody so the words don't really touch me, but the music does!.

i can never hold back the tears... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/21/09

this song is perhaps one of my favorite cold play songs
i sing this song to myself while on the bus, wedging so perfectly, yet out of knowhere right when i needed it the most, as colplay does for me. Their songs always speak to me, and fit so pefectly and into all the emotions one has of love. personally, the lines that stand out for me are; fistly i love it when he says "my loudest tones"... he says this in another song.. it fits that emotion so perfectly that it innovated that expreassion. "my loudest tones..." i dont think it necessarily means his loudest tones literally, but more metaphorically whereass the tones that are the ressonance which comes from the deepest vibrations emmited from his soul; and hes singing this to Her!!! for that love wow.
the other one is "started looking for excuses..." I think that when a relationship is either coming to an end or reaching the end of a cycle, this reality often comes up, i think that subconciously, the mind begins to "wake up" out of love-sickness- begining to rationalize thus the "excuses. I know this from my own experience.
thae last part of the song that strikes me is "you were an island to discover..." woman are like an island, and they are something to discover, i think that in manyways men are simplistic, and many times fail to acknowledge the complexity of love and of a womans emotions, because we too are in love and confused, often i have either gotten angry, and wanted to Just get over it" when emotions have so many layers, hence the metaphore- 'an island to discover- an island is persievable lost and out in the south pacific, mysterious in that it has not yet been discovered, simultaneously there are so many islands that you can; "pass them by..." failing to see the individual beauty of that one island that may haver been amidst millions yet you didnt stop to realize that that one small island, could have been the one you wind up on learning forever all of its boundless mysteries, as in the emotions of love, and that beautifull woman...

Unfailing Love | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/3/09

I like this song because it has so many different meanings. To most people it reminds them of a boyfriend or girlfriend, but to me it reminds me of God. And many people may not like that or agree with me, but hear me out. To me it plays out like a conversation. Where I would sing the verse, then he says let me tell you what state I'm in, I miss you. He's saying he wants to be with me, heal my pain. He doesn't care that I haven't spent hours of time with him or that I've done wrong, but that in this moment he just wants me to come and be with him. I then my response is, in my weakness, I come crawling back into your open arms.
So in full, I think Coldplay caught the full emotion of what it feels like to run back to the one you love, even though you are broken, knowing that love covers a multitude of sin and wrongdoing.

Genuis! | Reviewer: Jena | 7/1/09

This song is genuiously written. We all search for love and then when we have it we look for excuses as to why we should leave, something that would make us walk or not like the person and when we look and destroy the love we have until they finally leave or we take 2 steps out the door and realize that we made the mistake of looking too deeping for something that was never there.

theirs always more | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/29/09

It's deep, and meaningful like so many other coldplay songs. The words are straight out, simplistic and true. Theirs no clever riddles, no hidden meanings, no catchy hooks. This song just speaks out and carries the message across. The Scientist aside, this one brings out the most emotion, and sad reality out of all of Coldplay's songs.

We all have our stories to tell and pains to share, and Coldplay expresses it good. If any of you read this and this song reached out to you as it did to me, listen to 'Easy To Please'. It's a hidden treasure and just as meaningful as this one.

I miss you | Reviewer: Her | 5/26/09

This song is amazing, look how many ppl can relate. I feel everything he's saying in this song. My boyfriend broke up with me and even if I was so upset..I understand that it was really because of me. And I will do anything If I can just have everything we had all back.."I've gotta tell you what a state I'm in,
I've gotta tell you in my loudest tones,
That I started looking for a warning sign." It fits so perfect, because during that time I was..and I'm sorry. I wish he will give me second chance to show him how much I only want and need him..I love coldplay this song is really just perfect.

Warning Sign | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/18/09

It says it all right in the beginning. He was looking for an excuse to leave, to ruin a good thing. Self sabotage. Then he left or ended it and realized he was lost without her. What a state he was in, meaning a horrible state of being. Then he missed her. Then he tells her in his loudest voice the truth. I was looking for an excuse, I found it, ran with it, now I know what a fool I was because I miss you. He tells her he was wrong. I shouldn't have let you go. Then she takes him back into her open arms. WOW! What a beautiful song about his vulnerabilities. What a simple but beautifully honest song. Many of us have done this. This is one of the tenderest songs with a simple melody that only compliments the beauty of the lyrics. I love Cold Play. They are truly genius.

I HATE COLDPLAY | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/16/09

I hate this fucking song because its so painful to listen to. The raw electric guitar riffs reaching and scratching, The wailing synthisyzer and low beat of the bass just rip my soul aaprt. Then the vocals come in anr ring ou tmy feelings. "the truth is , I miss you so. Like I havent told her and been playing it cool and now I've broken down, : Come on in, I;ve gotta tell you what a state I'm in", Yep, a fucking mess. I started looking for a warning sign. I did it too. I didnt have to look too far because the signs were everywhere with her. Drinking, Depression, cheating, still in love with someone else, no green card and looking for an easy way out. Now, I keep trying to crawl back into her open arms, but they are closed. I see myself in her and have conquered the problems and know she can too. I want her because deep dowm : i missed the good side and the bubble burst and I started looking for excuses. FUCK THIS SONG!!!

Like everyone here, I feel I can relate to this song. My girlfriend broke up with me 5 days ago, and I can't get over it. Whilst she is now. Everything in the song, except for missing the good part, feels so true. What a song.
