"I kind of stumbled upon writing a record this time," says
Wallflowers singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jakob Dylan,
explaining the origins of Red Letters Days. For the dual
Grammy Award-winning band, their fourth album gradually
took shape last year in the midst of an extensive tour
schedule in support of 2000's Breach.
"I kind of needed a distraction from the road so I
naturally started writing," says Dylan, 32. "I really took
advantage of the schedule and by the time I looked down
there were a bunch songs. I just woke up one day and
realized we had a record."

As the itinerary rolled on, the band likewise seized the
opportunity to document the fresh-from-the-oven material.
Along with original member, keyboardist Rami Jaffee,
bassist Greg Richling, and drumm More...

    Review about Wallflowers

Meaning of the song | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song One Headlight performed by Wallflowers

Personally i never cared what the song was "really" about... i just loved it for what it was and the ideas it stirred in my mind. But for the sake of educating others and myself on the "real" meaning, i decided to do some digging on the internet.

    Excerpt from a VH1 interview in 2002 (www.vh1.com/artists/interview/1458715/20021115/wallflowers.jhtml):

VH1: Do you hear a lot of weird interpretations of your songs?

Dylan: I used to always have to hear about who people thought died in “One Headlight.” There was never anybody who died in “One Headlight.” But I actually encourage that. Countless times you hear an artist explain what their songs are about and you’re disappointed. I prefer people to listen. If they like the drumbeat, I’m okay with that. Whatever moves people.

Excerpts from interviews from 1997 found on Wallflowers.net (www.the-wallflowers.net/behind2e.html):

"There was a misunderstanding, I think, because of one of the lines in the song, that the whole song was about a girl who died. People ask me who died. There's nobody who died. It's in the first verse: 'The long death of…' What's…I can't even remember the line…let's see: '[I've] seen the sun coming up/At the funeral at dawn/The long broken arm of human law.' It's just about perseverance, and you know I've always tried to believe-like I assume a lot of people do-that the way I treat other people would maybe be the way that I get treated. And people like opportunity, people like to be given a chance, and I think when I wrote that song I probably wasn't really feeling, for whatever reason, like I was being given a chance. I think at that point I just felt like I couldn't get anybody to listen." The Album Network, December 19, 1997 - article121997.htm

"I tend to write with a lot of metaphors and images, so people take them literally,'' he says. "The song's meaning is all in the first verse. It's about the death of ideas. The first verse says, 'The death of the long broken arm of human law.' At times, it seems like there should be a code among human beings that is about respect and appreciation." He adds: "I wasn't feeling like there was much support outside the group putting together the record. In the chorus, it says, `C'mon try a little.' I didn't need everything to get through, I could still get through -- meaning 'one headlight.' '' 8.28.97 By Tom Alesia for Wisconsin State Journal - article082897.htm

------ About the song One Headlight performed by Wallflowers

I remember when i first heard this song, it was actually a long time ago and i just heard it again today on the radio.

And i thought of what it meant to me then and now, and i can actually relate now in ways i never thought possible due to actually experincing it. Long story short this song is amazing and leaves room for your own interpretation. :)

------ About the song One Headlight performed by Wallflowers

the beautiful thing about music is that the lyrics can represent whatever you want them to.
Sure they had a specific meaning for the writer, but some things are not explained because usually good writers want you to get something of your own from it... that's why really really good songs, a lot of ppl can relate in their own understanding of it. ;)

wat it all means? | Reviewer: Caleb Conheady
------ About the song One Headlight performed by Wallflowers

so isnt it about someones friend who died from suicide? 'the broken heart disease' is depression. im pretty sure of that.
and the part saying "its just her window ledge" means her death is just an opening to a new life. wether that be heaven or whatever the writer believes in.
and he always talk about how the place she lived in is depressing. and when she gives her little speech in the verse after the 1st chorus she really sounds like some one who feels depressed with life and wants to break away from all the pain. and the sunlight she sees would be ending it all. hence the 'she ran until theres nothing left, she hit the end'
as for the chorus, its about how he loved her and now that shes dead he has to go through life and everything they had alone. he is the one headlight and she is the light that no longer turns on. (because shes dead)
so hes saying he and her went through alot together and even though shes gone he wont forget her and will still set out do things they planned in hers (and his own) honor.
so, thats what i gathered from the lyrics.

------ About the song One Headlight performed by Wallflowers

I really don't think the singer is the womans friend trying to help her though. Because theres a line in the song "Man, I ain't changed, but I know I ain't the same
But somewhere here in between the city walls of dyin' dreams
I think her death it must be killin' me"

The singer is expressing guilt. If it were about breast cancer, he would be upset, but he wouldn't be blamming himself. Also... "Well they said she died easy of a broken heart disease"...breast cancer is not a broken heart disease.

You just sleepwalk so long before you wake up for more | Reviewer: RGH
------ About the song Sleepwalker performed by Wallflowers

I see this as the movie of my life and many others like me. Women wake me up from my sleep walking from time to time.
Maybe I could be the one they adore
    That could be my reputation
It's where I'm from that lets them think I'm a whore
    I'm an educated virgin

They put me in their sad movie (life) for a while then I leave and go back to sleepwalking in my self controled simple life. The song is great and it has a direct meaning to men that have learned to adapt in life from the wreckage beautiful women they have encountered through time put them through. Strong men sleep till the beauty of a woman awakes them. That beauty for some men is rare for them to find and needs to be seen beneath the surface of the female by these men before they can see Cupid, draw back his bow. hence the words, Cupid, don't draw back your bow.

The only way sometimes to be free is know what Sam Cooke didn't know,
Let me in, let me drown or learn how to swim
Just don't leave me at the window
I could be the one to be your next best friend
You may need someone to hold you

    I'll never be your valentine
    The sleepwalker in me
And God only know that I've tried.

This is the way of the Painted Pony, the man of many colors...This is a great song that say's a lot with very few words. Can you hear the words?

God only know that I've tried.

------ About the song One Headlight performed by Wallflowers

I've researched this song endlessly. Its about a woman with breast cancer and the ongoing events in her life and how much she's changed and she contemplates suicide because her disease is not only killing her physically but mentally as well and the speaker is her friend and trying to help her through it all.

    No Headlight. | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song One Headlight performed by Wallflowers

The headlight is metaforical. The girl in the song loved her best friend, and she thought he didn't feel the same, so she killed herself via jumping out of her window, and the guy feels guilty because he loved her too, and if he had said so, maybe she would still be alive.

    I Like This. | Reviewer: P.
------ About the song Sleepwalker performed by Wallflowers

I interpret this song in a rather odd fashion, I think it has two poits of view, the "SleepWalker", and someone else and it goes like a conversation between the two... of sorts.

    Me Likes it... XD

It has to do with a sort of Impossible love for me. a platonic thing that... maybe, after some time, can actually happen.

This song is one of the best written songs ever. I can't relate to it like the other two reviewers can, but I still love it just because it's such a great song. I love the way they mixed the guitar, drums and bass so well!!!!!!!!!!!

------ About the song Be Your Own Girl performed by Wallflowers

This song speaks of the desperation, enstrangement, and overwheming feeling of hopelessness that always seems to accompany us women when we are lonely. We always seem to find some idiot to keep us from being alone, only to find ourselves more miserable than before. Is there a woman live who can not relate?
